AB - In vitro cytotoxic evaluation, formation constants and thermal stability of four mixed-ligand Co(II) complexes with tpmc = N,N',N",N'"-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and carboxylate/dicarboxylate co-ligands of formulas [Co2(benz)2tpmc](ClO4)2•3H2O (1), benz– = benzoate anion; [Co2(L)tpmc](ClO4)2•nH2O, L = pht2– (phthalate dianion), n=2 (2), L = ipht2– (isophthalate dianion), n=4 (3) and L = tpht2–(terephthalate dianion), n=4 (4) are reported. The stoichiometric composition of the compounds in the solution were determined spectrophotometrically using Job's methods. Formation constants, K and Gibbs free energy, ΔG values were calculated. The thermal behavior of the complexes was investigated by simultaneous TG/DSC and TG – MS measurements. The cytotoxic effect of the complexes, the free ligands, the DMSO solvent and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, was evaluated on Human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x) and human colon carcinoma (LS174) cell lines. The IC50 values were between 12.7–42.3 μM. The first crystal structure determination of the Co(II) complex [Co2(µ-pht)tpmc](ClO4)2•H2O with boat conformation of tpmc ligand, was also done. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic crystal system, C2/c space group. The geometries around both Co(II) atoms are highly distorted octahedral. The Co(II) ions exhibit CoN4O2 coordination environments with the four nitrogen donor atoms of the tpmc ligand and two oxygen atoms belonging to the one carboxylate group of pht2− ligand. The carboxylate groups of pht2− are coordinated in an endo-bidentate mode. The tpmc ligand adopted a boat conformation in which the two coordinated Co(II) atoms are located on the same side of the ring, with Co•••Co distance amounting 5.4799(5) Å.

AB - Mortality rate caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial infection is reported to be considerably high in the world. This chapter introduces metal oxide nanoparticles (MO-NPs) as antimicrobial agents. It starts by presenting the effect of physicochemical properties of MO-NPs such as: chemical composition, particle size, surface, the shape, concentration, solubility, the generation of reactive oxygen species, on their antibacterial activity. It then explains the mechanisms of antimicrobial activity MO-NPs. By the end of the chapter the nanoformulations of main metal oxides: aluminum, calcium, magnesium, silver, zinc, iron, copper, and titanium are presented. A full discussion of the correlation between metal oxide properties and their mechanisms of action as antimicrobials is included.

AB - Synthetic biomaterials based on fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite are potentially attractive for orthopedic and dental implant applications. The new synthesis of fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite samples were done by neutralization, which consists of adding the solution of HF and H3PO4 in suspension of Ca(OH)(2). Characterization studies from XRD, SEM and FTIR spectra showed that crystals are obtained with apatite structure and those particles of all samples are nano size, with an average length of 80 nm and about 15-25 nm in diameter. The central composite design was used in order to determine the optimal conditions for the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized samples. In order to evaluate the influence of operating parameters on the percent of viable cell reduction of Streptococcus mutans, three independent variables were chosen: exposure time, pH of saline and floride concentration in apatite samples. The experimental and predicted antimicrobial activities were in close agreement. Antimicrobial activity of the samples increases with the increase of fluoride concentration and the decreased pH of saline. The maximum antimicrobial activity was achieved at the initial pH of 4.

AB - Monophase silver-doped hydroxyapatite (AgxCa10-x(PO4)(6)(OH)(2); 0.002 lt = x lt = 0.04) nanoparticles were prepared using a neutralization method and investigated with respect to potential medical applications. This method consists of dissolving Ag2O in solution of H3PO4, and the slow addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2) was applied for the purpose of homogenous distribution of silver ions. Characterization studies from XRD, TEM and FTIR spectra showed that obtained crystals are monophase hydroxyapatites and that particles of all samples are of nano size, with average length of 70nm and about 15-25nm in diameter. Antimicrobial studies have demonstrated that all silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity in vitro against the following pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The hydroxyapatite sample with the highest content of silver has shown the highest antimicrobial activity; killed all cells of E. coli and brought to more than 99% reduction in viable counts of S. aureus and C. albicans. The atomic force microscopic studies illustrate that silver-doped hydroxyapatite sample causes considerable morphological changes of microorganism cells which might be the cause of cells' death. Hemolysis ratios of the silver-doped hydroxyapatite samples were below 3%, indicating good blood compatibility and that are promising as biomaterials. Crown Copyright

The synthesis of copper and zinc-doped hydroxyapatite was done by neutralization method. This method consists of dissolving CuO or ZnO in solution of H(3)PO(4), and the slow addition to suspension of Ca(OH)(2) for obtaining monophasic product. Characterization studies from XRD, SEM, TEM and FTIR spectra showed that particles of all samples are of nano size and they do not contain any discernible crystalline impurity. The quantitative elemental analysis showed that the copper and zinc ions fully incorporated into the hydroxyapatite. The antimicrobial effects of doped hydroxyapatite powders against pathogen bacterial strains Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and pathogen yeast Candida albicans were tested in solid and liquid media. Quantitative test in liquid media clearly showed that copper and zinc-doped samples had viable cells reduction ability for all tested strains.
