AB - Waste management is still a global challenge in the 21st century. Sustainable waste management aims to minimize the amount of solid waste that goes to landfill, keep materials in use as long as possible and thus ensure a reduction in the negative environmental, social and financial impacts of consumption. Household waste management is a challenging task because of the increasing amount of waste globally and the large quantity of different materials in this waste stream. Sorting the waste at the source, the place where it is generated, is a crucial task to promote recycling and circular economy. Primary separation of municipal waste in the Republic of Serbia is determined by the law on waste management and separate collection of plastic, paper, glass and metal is foreseen. However, waste sorting is still not a popular practice in households. Waste sorting at the source presents an initial step to recycling. This paper describes the primary separation of household waste in the urban area of Šabac, which is a part of project "Supply of equipment for solid waste source separation schemes in 4 regions". The project is implemented in four regions for waste management and include a total of seventeen cities and municipalities in Serbia. With the participation of citizens, the city of Šabac has started a project of primary waste sorting in households. Households were able to pick up bins for the primary sorting of household waste, as well as brochures with instructions. In the bins, citizens separate paper, plastic and metal waste from their households, which will later be used in the recycling process. By introducing the primary selection of household waste in this way, it is expected that the rate of recycling will increase to 15% in the next 2 years. In this way, goals such as: reduction of landfilled waste, preservation of the capacity of the Srem-Mačva sanitary landfill, contribution to recycling which results in saving energy, natural resources and money, preserves the environment, which is in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

AB - The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) belongs to the Urticaceae family and represents a perennial plant. Stinging nettle is abundant species occurring in various types of forest, road verges and grassland sites. In many countries is used as both medicine and food. Stinging nettle is a weed and its seeds, leaves and even roots are used for medicinal purpose. Thanks to its high content of nutrients and bioactive compounds like poly phenols, vitamins and minerals, nettle possesses a great nutritional value and a large number of pharmacological effects, including anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, immunostimulatory, anti-infectious, hypotensive, antiulcer activities and cardiovascular disease prevention. It is a reservoir of minerals (especially iron), vitamin C and pro-vitamin A.
Last decades the popularity of herbal medicine is rapidly increasing all over the world. However, heavy metal toxicity in plant materials has a great impact and importance on herbal plants and consequently affects the quality of herbal raw materials, herbal extracts, the safety and marketability of drugs. This paper presents determination of content seven heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb) in leaves samples Urtica dioica L. collected from five localities in Republic of Serbia. The sample preparation procedure involved dry digestion in triplicate and dissolution of the ash in 6M HCl and then in 0.1 M HNO3. All elements were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The contents of Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe in the leaves were found to be in the ranges of 0.54±0.00 to 1.87±0.10 ˂ 2.12±0.69-12.79±0.53 ˂ 18.18±0.46-28.48±1.37 ˂ 30.63±1.45-68.44±5.11, and 109.75±4.01-244.41±13.50 mg/kg dry weight, respectively. Value of toxic heavy metal Pb in two samples is 0.37±0.0 mg/kg dry weight, whiles content Cd has been below the detection limit. The content of heavy metals in samples were used to calculate target hazard quotients values (THQ) and hazard index (HI).

[Cu(ala)cyc](ClO4)2∙2.5H2O. The complex was isolated and previously characterized by: elemental
analysis (C, H, N), molar conductivity, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements
at room temperature. The sixcoordinate octahedral geometry around Cu(II) complexes was
proposed. The experimental data suggested that the tetradentate ligand cyclam was coordinated to
metals through four N donors and the amino carboxylate ligand coordinated via carboxylate ion.
Investigate of thermal stability can be crucial in confirming the structure as well as in assessing the
applicability of new compounds. The thermal properties of these complex have been investigated

AB - Two new bridged dinuclear Cu(II) compounds of tpmc (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-
1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and co-ligands L-leucine or L-isoleucine have been synthesized
and characterized. The complexes were prepared in the reaction [Cutpmc](ClO4)4∙6H2O and
aminocarboxylates. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis (C, H, and N), molar
electrical conductivity and spectral methods (UV/vis and FTIR). The analytical data of the complexes
show the formation of binuclear complexes with the proposed formula [Cu2(L)tpmc](ClO4)4, L=L-
leucine (1) and L=L-isoleucine (2). The spectroscopic data suggested that the tpmc is coordinated to

and characterized.
The spectroscopic data suggested that the tpmc is coordinated to
Cu(II) through eight N donors and amino carboxylate ligands via their carboxylate ion moieties.",

AB - The chemical components in tea have received great interest because they are related to health. In this
study the content of five heavy metals including Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Ni were determined by atomic
absorption spectrometry on samples of herbal teas: Quercus cortex, Gentianae radix, Althaeae radix,
Uvae ursi folium and Glycyrrhizae radix collected from Šabac's market, Serbia. Based on the obtained
content of the metals in the analyzed herbal teas, estimated daily intake (EDI) was determined. Both
target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were employed to assess the potential health risk
of studied metals in teas. The herbal tea samples analysed contain essential heavy metals (Cu, Fe,
Mn, Zn) and probably essential in trace (Ni) and could contribute to the daily dietary requirements.
The THQ from 7.76·10−4 to 5.75·10-1 and HI from 0.1059 to 0.6151 values for tea samples were lower
than 1, suggesting that consumption of tea would not cause significant health risks for consumers.

AB - Chemical components of teas have received great interest because they are related to health. In this work, data on the determination of foreign matter, loss on drying/water content, total ash and ash insoluble in hydrochloric acid are presented. The content of seven heavy metals including Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry in samples of several herbal teas: Matricariae flos, Thymi herba, Menthae piperitae folium, Betulae folium, Quercus cortex, Gentianae radix, Frangulae cortex, Althaeae radix, Uvae ursi folium and Glycyrrhizae radix collected from Šabac’s market, Serbia. The sample preparation procedure involved dry digestion and dissolution of the ash in 6M HCl and then in 0.1 M HNO3. Herbal teas showed the concentration of heavy metals Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Ni in the range: 2.9 ± 0.1 – 22.2 ± 0.9 mg/kg, 118.5 ± 1.1 – 755.5 ± 2.5 mg/kg, 19.0 ± 5.8 – 561.0 ± 1.9 mg/kg, 6.5 ± 0.4 – 242.5 ± 1.4 mg/kg and 2.5 ± 0.1 – 10 ± 1.1 mg/kg, respectively. The level of copper in all samples was uniform. The highest content of Fe was in Thymi herba, while Mn and Zn were at maximum in Betulae folium. The levels of toxic heavy metals Cd and Pb were below the detection limit. The obtained values were compared with data available from literature. The herbal tea samples analyzed contained essential heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) and probably essential in trace (Ni), and could obey the daily dietary requirements. Noncancer health risk assessment detected that the herbal teas of Betulae folium and Frangulae cortex can manifest some health risk to consumers.

AB - Two new cationic Cu(II) complexes of cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraaza- cyclotetradecane) and aminocarboxylate coligands glycine or alanine have been synthesized. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis (C, H and N), molar electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature, spectral methods (UV/Vis and Fourier transform infrared), as well as by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The analytical data of the complexes show the formation of mononuclear com- plexes with general formula [Cu(L)cyc](ClO4 )2⋅nH2 O, A) L = glycine, n = 1.5 and B) L = alanine, n = 2.5. The tetradentate ligand cyclam was coordinated to metals through four N donors. The spectroscopic data suggested that the amino carboxylate ligands coordinated via their carboxylate ion moieties. The six- -coordinate octahedral geometry around Cu(II) in both complexes was pre- sumed. TG-DTA analysis indicated that complex B decomposed exothermally in a single step in the range of 310–400 °C. The cytotoxic activity of Cu(II) complexes and the starting ligands were tested against human cervix adenocar- cinoma cell line (HeLa), human melanoma (FemX) and human colon carci- noma (LS174). The IC50 values for the Cu(II) complexes were from 48.35– –82.25 μM. Both complexes were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and the yeast Candida albicans.
Candida albicans.

AB - New cationic complexes of Cu(II) with bridged aminocarboxylates: glycine and alanine, as well as octaazamacrocyclic ligand N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc), with general formula [Cu2(L)tpmc](ClO4)4∙Y, (1): L=glycine, Y=2H2O and (2): L=alanine, Y=CH3CN were synthesized. Characterization of the complexes was performed by elemental analysis (C, H, N, Cu), UV/Vis, FTIR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The single crystal X-ray analyses results show that reported compounds were obtained as hydrates with formulae [Cu2(gly)tpmc](ClO4)4⋅6.5H2O (M1) and [Cu2(ala)tpmc](ClO4)4⋅5H2O (M2). They crystallize in the orthorhombic system, P212121 space group. The metal centers are bridged by the carboxylate group of the glycine/alanine and bound via nitrogen atoms of tmpc. In the complex M1/M2, geometry around Cu(II) coordination sphere is square pyramidal (M1: τ5 = 0.10/0.33; M2: τ5 = 0.04/0.30). In the crystal structure of M1 and M2 the amino acids exist as a zwitterion. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicated very weak ferromagnetic interaction between two Cu(II) ions. The antiproliferative effect of the complexes, the free ligands, and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, were tested against human leukemia monocytic cell line (THP-1), leukemic T cell lymphoblast (JURKAT) and Human Caucasian Burkitt′s lymphoma (RAMOS). The IC50 values for the complexes were from 37.9 ± 2.6 to 63.05 ± 0.72 µM.

The IC50 values for the complexes were from 37.9 ± 2.6 to 63.05 ± 0.72 µM.",

AB - The presence of residual cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is a current dilemma in clinical practice; indeed, despite optimal management and treatment, a considerable proportion of patients still undergo major CV events. Novel lipoprotein biomarkers are suggested as possible targets for improving the outcomes of patients at higher risk for CVD, and their impact on major CV events and mortality have previously been investigated. Innovative antidiabetic therapies have recently shown a significant reduction in atherogenic lipoproteins, beyond their effects on glucose parameters; it has also been suggested that such anti-atherogenic effect may represent a valuable mechanistic explanation for the cardiovascular benefit of, at least, some of the novel antidiabetic agents, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. This emphasizes the need for further research in the field in order to clearly assess the effects of innovative treatments on different novel biomarkers, including atherogenic lipoproteins, such as small dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL), lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) and dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The current article discusses the clinical importance of novel lipid biomarkers for better management of patients in order to overcome residual cardiovascular risk.

AB - A large number of interesting Co (II) complexes with macrocyclicligands have been synthesized and the recognition of its complexes as important bioactive compounds in vitro and in vivo has aroused growing interest in these agents as potential drugs for therapeutic use in various diseases. Numerous available information on their bioinorganic properties and mode of action in several biological systems, combined with the new possibilities imposed by the development of medical chemistry, opens space for the development of a new generation of highly active drugs with minimized side effects which could add significantly to the current clinical research and practice. In this paper we attempt to present some properties of the earlier isolated the first Co(II)tpmc complex for which crystal structure confirmed chair conformation of macrocycle. Complex with formula [Co2(Cl)2tpmc](BF4)2 (tpmc = N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane), was studied on thermal behaviour and biological activity. TG-DTA analysis indicates that complex decomposition in a single step in the range of 365-435 °C. Investigated cytotoxic activity against two human cancer cell lines: HeLa (human cervix adenocarcinoma) and K562 (human myelogenous leukaemia). Complex was also preliminary assayed in vitro toward bacteria, fungi and mould together with the starting material for the synthesis (ligands, simple salts and solvents) as test substances. Investigated complex showed a moderate activity against strains of bacteria and were inactive against the tested fungi and mould. Minimal inhibitory concentration suppressing the visible growth of bacteria was determined. Biological investigations show the complex has significant cytotoxic potential.
Antimikrobno djelovanje kompleksa kvantifikovano je određivanjem minimalne inhibitorne koncentracije (MIC) korišćenjem bakterija Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus xylosus, Bacillus cereus, soja kvasca Candida albicans i plesni Aspergillus niger.

AB - In vitro cytotoxic evaluation, formation constants and thermal stability of four mixed-ligand Co(II) complexes with tpmc = N,N',N",N'"-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and carboxylate/dicarboxylate co-ligands of formulas [Co2(benz)2tpmc](ClO4)2•3H2O (1), benz– = benzoate anion; [Co2(L)tpmc](ClO4)2•nH2O, L = pht2– (phthalate dianion), n=2 (2), L = ipht2– (isophthalate dianion), n=4 (3) and L = tpht2–(terephthalate dianion), n=4 (4) are reported. The stoichiometric composition of the compounds in the solution were determined spectrophotometrically using Job's methods. Formation constants, K and Gibbs free energy, ΔG values were calculated. The thermal behavior of the complexes was investigated by simultaneous TG/DSC and TG – MS measurements. The cytotoxic effect of the complexes, the free ligands, the DMSO solvent and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, was evaluated on Human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x) and human colon carcinoma (LS174) cell lines. The IC50 values were between 12.7–42.3 μM. The first crystal structure determination of the Co(II) complex [Co2(µ-pht)tpmc](ClO4)2•H2O with boat conformation of tpmc ligand, was also done. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic crystal system, C2/c space group. The geometries around both Co(II) atoms are highly distorted octahedral. The Co(II) ions exhibit CoN4O2 coordination environments with the four nitrogen donor atoms of the tpmc ligand and two oxygen atoms belonging to the one carboxylate group of pht2− ligand. The carboxylate groups of pht2− are coordinated in an endo-bidentate mode. The tpmc ligand adopted a boat conformation in which the two coordinated Co(II) atoms are located on the same side of the ring, with Co•••Co distance amounting 5.4799(5) Å.

AB - Mortality rate caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial infection is reported to be considerably high in the world. This chapter introduces metal oxide nanoparticles (MO-NPs) as antimicrobial agents. It starts by presenting the effect of physicochemical properties of MO-NPs such as: chemical composition, particle size, surface, the shape, concentration, solubility, the generation of reactive oxygen species, on their antibacterial activity. It then explains the mechanisms of antimicrobial activity MO-NPs. By the end of the chapter the nanoformulations of main metal oxides: aluminum, calcium, magnesium, silver, zinc, iron, copper, and titanium are presented. A full discussion of the correlation between metal oxide properties and their mechanisms of action as antimicrobials is included.

AB - Two new complexes with the general formula [Cu2(L)tpmc](ClO4)3·nH2O (tpmc = N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)- -1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, L = N-methylglycine, n = 3; L = N,N- -dimethylglycine, n = 2) were isolated and their composition, some physical and chemical properties and geometries were proposed based on elemental analysis (C, H, N), conductometric and magnetic measurements and spectro-scopic data (UV–Vis, FTIR). It is evident that the complexes are binuclear and an exo coordination mode of the macrocyclic ligand in the boat conformation was proposed. The co-ligands are coordinated as a bridge using both oxygen atoms of the OCO- group. The cytotoxic activity of Cu(II) complexes as well as their Co(II) analogs, the starting ligands and the free salts were tested against human cervix adenocarcinoma cell line (HeLa), human chronic myelo-genous leukemia cells (K562), human breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-453), and a non-cancerous cell line, human embryonic lung fibroblast (MRC-5). The IC50 values for the Cu(II) complexes were from 21.6±0.04 to 66.1±0.8, and for the Co(II) analogs were within the range from 8.8±0.74 to 15.40±1.52. All four complexes were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and the yeast Candida albicans.

AB - New cationic mixed-ligand tetranuclear complex [Cu-4(tpht) (tpmc)(2)](ClO4)(6)center dot 5H(2)O (tpmc = N, N', N '', N"'-tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, H(2)tpht - terephthalic acid (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid)) was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis (C, H, N, Cu), UV/Vis, IR, EPR (X-band) spectra, conductivity, cyclic voltammetry and magnetic measurements (SQUID). Five coordinated geometry for new Cu(II) complex is proposed. The central metal ion is coordinated with two pyridyl and two cyclam nitrogens and bridged with -N-(CH2)(3)-N- fragments of the cyclam ring and OCO- of the terephthalate anion. Copper (II) ions are coordinated out of cyclam rings and one OCO- group from tpht bridges two Cu(II) inside tpmc unit and two Cu(2)tpmc units are bridged by dicarboxylate tpht dianion engaging all four oxygen atoms. Weak ferromagnetic interaction between copper (II) ions in new tetranuclear complex is observed, Weiss constant theta = 0.21 K and C = 0.398 cm(3) Kmol(-1). The new complex, related Cu(II) complexes with bridged benzene carboxylate, [Cu-2(C6H5COO)tpmc](ClO4)(3)center dot CH3OH, [Cu-2(Hpht)tpmc](ClO4)(3)center dot 3H(2)O (H(2)pht = phthalic acid), [Cu-4(ipht) (tpmc)(2)](ClO4)(6)center dot NaClO4 center dot 2CH(3)CN (H(2)ipht = isophthalic acid), solvents, starting salts and ligands were in vitro evaluated for antiproliferative and antibacterial activity. Antiproliferative evaluation was carried out using tumour cell lines: HeLa (human adenocarcinoma) and K562 (chronic myelogenous leukaemia). Among all tested compounds, the ipht complex revealed the highest antiproliferative activity. According to antibacterial screening results, most active compound was the benzoate complex against Micrococcus lysodeikticus.

AB - New carboxylate complexes of the tetraazamacrocyclic ligand
N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridilmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc)
with Ni(II) and Zn(II) as central ions were prepared. In mixed-ligand com-
plexes (endo,endo)-bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylate dianion (C9H8O42-
)
is also coordinated to metal ions. The complexes were characterized by ele-
mental analysis (C, H, N), FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, molar conductivity
determination and magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature.
The analytical data of the complexes show the formation of binuclear
[Ni2(C9H8O4)tpmc](ClO4)2·4H2O and tetranuclear [Zn4(C9H8O4)(tpmc)2](ClO4)6·
·CH3CN·KClO 4·4H2O complexes. In tetranuclear Zn(II) complex bicyclic
dicarboxylate ligand is most likely to be bridge coordinated, and in binuclear
Ni(II) complex it is coordinated in a combined bridged manner with chelate
rings formation. In both complexes macrocyclic ligand was exo coordinated,
out of cyclam ring and adopts a boat conformation. The Zn(II) complex is one
of the rare tetranuclear Zn(II)-tpmc complexes with carboxylate ion bridging
two Zn2tpmc units. The complexes were tested for antibacterial activity against
Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Bacillus
subtilis (ATCC 6633), Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli (ATCC
25922), and yeast Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), and were screened for
antiproliferative activity against human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and
human myelogenous leukemia (K562) cell lines.

AB - AbstrcatNew cationic tetranuclear Co(II) and neutral binuclear Cu(II) complexes with tpmc (N,N,N,N-tetrakis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and bridging pyromellitate ligand pma (tetraanion 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) were isolated. The composition of the compounds is proposed based on elemental analyses (C, H, N, M=Cu, Co), molar conductivity determination, UV-Vis, FTIR, EPR, LC-MS and reflectance spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, cyclic voltammetry, as well as TG and DTA. It is proposed that in [Co-4(pma)(tpmc)(2)](ClO4)(4)6H(2)O (1), cobalt(II) is six-coordinate out of cyclam rings and one OCO- from pma participates in coordination with one Co(II). In the case of [Cu-2(pma)tpmc].8H(2)O (2), one OCO- from pma bridges two Cu(II). The cytotoxic activity of 1 and 2 was tested against tumor cell lines human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), estrogen-receptor-positive human breast cancer (MCF-7), human myelogenous leukemia (K562), and the human Caucasian Burkitt's lymphoma (Ramos). The IC50 values for 1 and 2 were within the range 44.66 +/- 2.39 to 152.40 +/- 2.28M, and from 140.88 +/- 3.51 to 192.05 +/- 2.09M, respectively. Both 1 and 2 were tested for antimicrobial activity. We determined that minimal inhibitory concentration for 1 against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was 25mM. Complex 2 did not express activity against tested microbial strains.

Complex 2 did not express activity against tested microbial strains.",

Then, we compared synthesized complexes with early described chloro analogous. Both complexes are binuclear with proposed chair conformation of macrocycle. Complex compounds were also preliminary assayed in vitro toward some Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria, fungi and mould together with the starting material for the synthesis (ligands, simple salts and solvents) as test substances. In some cases certain antimicrobial activity of the complexes was detected. Minimal inhibitory concentration suppressing the visible growth of bacteria was determined. Both investigated complexes showed a moderate activity against strains of bacteria and were inactive against the tested fungi and mould. Under the same conditions and applied the same concentration of the control group did not show activity.

AB - The aim of this paper is to compare the efficiency of some analogue of Co (II) and Cu (II) complexes to bacteria pathogenic to humans, which can contaminate vegetables and fruit at any stage of its production. The complexes of Cu(II) and Co(II) with N, N’, N’’, N’’’ - tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) -1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and various additional ligands were tested against Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria and some strains of fungi. As a control group the free salts of Co(II) and Cu(II) which were used as starting substances in the synthesis, as well as ligands and solvents were tested. The minimum inhibition concentrations suppressing the visible growth of bacteria (MIC) were also screened. Investigated complexes showed a moderate activity against strains of bacteria. Complexes of Co(II) generally showed higher activity then Cu(II) analogues. Under the same conditions and the same concentrations, the control group showed no activity. No compound showed antifungal activity.

AB - Background/Aim. Based on numerous studies in animals, the most prominent toxic effects of decabrominated di-phenyl ether (BDE-209) are observed in the liver, thyroid hormone homeostasis, reproductive and nervous systems. BDE-209 exhibits its toxic effects partly through the aryl hydrocarbon (Ah) receptor and consequent induction of hepatic microsomal enzymes. The aim of this study was to assess the hepatotoxic effect vs target tissue dose of BDE-209 in the subacutely orally exposed Wistar rats. Methods. Effects were examined on male Wistar rats, weighing 200-240 g, exposed to doses of 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 mg BDE-209/kg body weight (bw)/day by gavage during 28 days. Animals were treated according to the decision of the Ethics Committee of the Military Medical Academy, No 9667-1/2011. Evaluation of the hepatotoxic effect was based on: relative liver weight water and food intake, biochemical parameters of liver function [aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gama glutamyl transferase (γ-GT)], and oxidative stress parameters in liver homogenates [malondialdehiyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), -SH] and morphological and pathohistological changes in the liver. For the assessment of internal dose - response relationship, lower confidence limit of Benchmark dose (BMDL) of 5% or 10% i.e. BMDL5 or BMDL10, were calculated using PROAST software. Results. After the application of 1,000, 2,000 or 4,000 mg BDE-209/kg bw/day, the concentrations of BDE-209 measured in liver were 0.269, 0.569 and 0.859 mg/kg of liver wet weight, (ww) respectively. Internal doses correlated with external (r = 0.972; p lt 0.05) according to equation: internal dose (mg BDE-209/kg of liver ww) = 0.0002 ' external dose (mg/kg bw/day) + 0.0622. Hepato-toxicity was demonstrated based on significant increase in AST and γ-GT activities and the degree of histopathological changes. The lowest BMDL5 of 0.07228 mg BDE-209/kg of liver ww, correlating to external dose of 39 mg/kg/day, indicated the increase of AST activity as the most sensitive biomarker of BDE-209 hepatotoxicity in subacutely ex-posed rats. Conclusion. The results of the present work add up to the issue of BDE-209 toxicity profile with a focus on relationship between internal dose and hepatotoxicity. Critical internal dose for the effect on AST of 0.07 mg/kg of liver ww, corresponding to external dose of 39 mg/kg/day, is the lowest dose ever observed among the studies on BDE-209 hepatotoxicity. For the persistent sub-stances with low absorption rate such as BDE-209, critical effect based on internal dose in majority of cases is considered as more precisely defined than the effect established based on external dose, particularly.

abstract = "Background/Aim. For the persistent sub-stances with low absorption rate such as BDE-209, critical effect based on internal dose in majority of cases is considered as more precisely defined than the effect established based on external dose, particularly., Uvod/Cilj. AB - Synthetic biomaterials based on fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite are potentially attractive for orthopedic and dental implant applications. The new synthesis of fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite samples were done by neutralization, which consists of adding the solution of HF and H3PO4 in suspension of Ca(OH)(2). Characterization studies from XRD, SEM and FTIR spectra showed that crystals are obtained with apatite structure and those particles of all samples are nano size, with an average length of 80 nm and about 15-25 nm in diameter. The central composite design was used in order to determine the optimal conditions for the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized samples. In order to evaluate the influence of operating parameters on the percent of viable cell reduction of Streptococcus mutans, three independent variables were chosen: exposure time, pH of saline and floride concentration in apatite samples. The experimental and predicted antimicrobial activities were in close agreement. Antimicrobial activity of the samples increases with the increase of fluoride concentration and the decreased pH of saline. The maximum antimicrobial activity was achieved at the initial pH of 4.

The results were compared with the corresponding data for the cis-diamminedichloridoplafinum(H) (CDDP) as referent cytostatic, as well as with the free ligands and the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as controls. The complexes showed considerable antiproliferative effect, although significantly less than CDDP. The thermal decomposition pattern of the complexes was determined by simultaneous TG/DSC measurements. The thermal stability of the compounds 2-7 followed the trend of their antiproliferative activity against the HeLa cell line, as well as their corresponding stability constants. The highest thermal stability and cytotoxicity belonged to complex [Cu(2)tpmc](ClO4)(4), with no anionic co-ligand. Complex [Cu-2(NO2)tpmc](ClO4)(3) exhibited a selective cytotoxicity against LS174 cells, at the level of the most active [Cu(2)tpmc](ClO4)(4).

AB - Four cationic mixed-ligand complexes of Cu (II) with N, N', N'', N''' -tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) -1,4,8,11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids: succinic, glutaric , adipic and sebacic were investigated in vitro on the human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human malignant melanoma (Fem-x), oestrogen-receptor-positive human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells and the human acute monocyte leukemia cell line (THP1), while free ligands, Cu(II) salt and solvent (used as a controls) were inactive on the same conditions. The metabolic activity of the cells was determined by tetrazolium MTS test. All complexes showed cytotoxicity toward the used cell lines, while free ligands, Cu(II) salt and solvent (used as a controls) were inactive on the same conditions. Increasing the number of - CH2- groups in homologous serie of aliphatic dicarboxylate ligands leads to the increasing cytotoxic activity of the complex. The highest cytotoxic effect of azamacrocycle Cu(II) complexes with glutarate, adipate, sebacinate ligand showed on the cell line MCF-7 and the worst on HeLa cells. A significant effect of sebacinate Cu(II)complex to all tested tumor cell lines applied in concentrations of 100 and 200 μM and up to HeLa cells.

abstract = "Four cationic mixed-ligand complexes of Cu (II) with N, N', N'', N''' -tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) -1,4,8,11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids: succinic, glutaric , adipic and sebacic were investigated in vitro on the human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human malignant melanoma (Fem-x), oestrogen-receptor-positive human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells and the human acute monocyte leukemia cell line (THP1), while free ligands, Cu(II) salt and solvent (used as a controls) were inactive on the same conditions. A significant effect of sebacinate Cu(II)complex to all tested tumor cell lines applied in concentrations of 100 and 200 μM and up to HeLa cells., Četiri katjonska mešovito-ligandna kompleksa Cu(II) sa N,N',N'N''-tetrakis(2- piridilmetil)-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-ciklotetradekanom i alifatičnim dikarboksilatima: ćilibarnom, glutarnom, adipinskom i sebacinskom kiselinom su ispitivani na humanim malignim ćelijskim linijama: cervikalnog adenokarcinoma (HeLa), melanoma (Fem-X), estrogen pozitivnog karcinoma dojke (MCF-7) i akutne monocitne leukemjie (THP1).

AB - New cationic Cu(II) complexes with N, N', N '', N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids: pentanedioic (glutaric acid = glutH(2)), hexanedioic acid (adipic acid = adipH(2)) and decanedioic acid (sebacic acid = sebH(2)) of general formula [Cu-4(L)(tpmc)(2)] (ClO4)(6)center dot xH(2)O, L = glut, x = 2; L = adip, x = 7; L = seb, x = 6 were isolated. Their composition and charges are proposed based on elemental analyses and molar conductivity measurements. By the comparison of their UV-Vis, reflectance, FTIR and EPR spectral data, CV and SQUID magnetic measurements, with those for the complex with butanedioic acid (succinic acid = succH(2)) of known molecular structure and analysis of LC/MS spectra, geometry with two [Cu(2)tpmc](4) units bridged by dicarboxylate dianion engaging all oxygens is proposed. Within units, Cu(II) ions are also bridged with -N- portion of cyclam ring. All four complexes were screened to in vitro antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity along with free primary and secondary ligands, Cu(II) salt and solvent controls. Detected antibacterial and cytotoxic activity for the complexes was enhanced in most cases than the corresponding controls.
