AB - Waste management is still a global challenge in the 21st century. Sustainable waste management aims to minimize the amount of solid waste that goes to landfill, keep materials in use as long as possible and thus ensure a reduction in the negative environmental, social and financial impacts of consumption. Household waste management is a challenging task because of the increasing amount of waste globally and the large quantity of different materials in this waste stream. Sorting the waste at the source, the place where it is generated, is a crucial task to promote recycling and circular economy. Primary separation of municipal waste in the Republic of Serbia is determined by the law on waste management and separate collection of plastic, paper, glass and metal is foreseen. However, waste sorting is still not a popular practice in households. Waste sorting at the source presents an initial step to recycling. This paper describes the primary separation of household waste in the urban area of Šabac, which is a part of project "Supply of equipment for solid waste source separation schemes in 4 regions". The project is implemented in four regions for waste management and include a total of seventeen cities and municipalities in Serbia. With the participation of citizens, the city of Šabac has started a project of primary waste sorting in households. Households were able to pick up bins for the primary sorting of household waste, as well as brochures with instructions. In the bins, citizens separate paper, plastic and metal waste from their households, which will later be used in the recycling process. By introducing the primary selection of household waste in this way, it is expected that the rate of recycling will increase to 15% in the next 2 years. In this way, goals such as: reduction of landfilled waste, preservation of the capacity of the Srem-Mačva sanitary landfill, contribution to recycling which results in saving energy, natural resources and money, preserves the environment, which is in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

AB - New cationic complexes of Cu(II) with bridged aminocarboxylates: glycine and alanine, as well as octaazamacrocyclic ligand N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc), with general formula [Cu2(L)tpmc](ClO4)4∙Y, (1): L=glycine, Y=2H2O and (2): L=alanine, Y=CH3CN were synthesized. Characterization of the complexes was performed by elemental analysis (C, H, N, Cu), UV/Vis, FTIR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The single crystal X-ray analyses results show that reported compounds were obtained as hydrates with formulae [Cu2(gly)tpmc](ClO4)4⋅6.5H2O (M1) and [Cu2(ala)tpmc](ClO4)4⋅5H2O (M2). They crystallize in the orthorhombic system, P212121 space group. The metal centers are bridged by the carboxylate group of the glycine/alanine and bound via nitrogen atoms of tmpc. In the complex M1/M2, geometry around Cu(II) coordination sphere is square pyramidal (M1: τ5 = 0.10/0.33; M2: τ5 = 0.04/0.30). In the crystal structure of M1 and M2 the amino acids exist as a zwitterion. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicated very weak ferromagnetic interaction between two Cu(II) ions. The antiproliferative effect of the complexes, the free ligands, and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, were tested against human leukemia monocytic cell line (THP-1), leukemic T cell lymphoblast (JURKAT) and Human Caucasian Burkitt′s lymphoma (RAMOS). The IC50 values for the complexes were from 37.9 ± 2.6 to 63.05 ± 0.72 µM.

AB - In vitro cytotoxic evaluation, formation constants and thermal stability of four mixed-ligand Co(II) complexes with tpmc = N,N',N",N'"-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and carboxylate/dicarboxylate co-ligands of formulas [Co2(benz)2tpmc](ClO4)2•3H2O (1), benz– = benzoate anion; [Co2(L)tpmc](ClO4)2•nH2O, L = pht2– (phthalate dianion), n=2 (2), L = ipht2– (isophthalate dianion), n=4 (3) and L = tpht2–(terephthalate dianion), n=4 (4) are reported. The stoichiometric composition of the compounds in the solution were determined spectrophotometrically using Job's methods. Formation constants, K and Gibbs free energy, ΔG values were calculated. The thermal behavior of the complexes was investigated by simultaneous TG/DSC and TG – MS measurements. The cytotoxic effect of the complexes, the free ligands, the DMSO solvent and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, was evaluated on Human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x) and human colon carcinoma (LS174) cell lines. The IC50 values were between 12.7–42.3 μM. The first crystal structure determination of the Co(II) complex [Co2(µ-pht)tpmc](ClO4)2•H2O with boat conformation of tpmc ligand, was also done. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic crystal system, C2/c space group. The geometries around both Co(II) atoms are highly distorted octahedral. The Co(II) ions exhibit CoN4O2 coordination environments with the four nitrogen donor atoms of the tpmc ligand and two oxygen atoms belonging to the one carboxylate group of pht2− ligand. The carboxylate groups of pht2− are coordinated in an endo-bidentate mode. The tpmc ligand adopted a boat conformation in which the two coordinated Co(II) atoms are located on the same side of the ring, with Co•••Co distance amounting 5.4799(5) Å.

N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridilmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (tpmc)
with Ni(II) and Zn(II) as central ions were prepared. In mixed-ligand com-
plexes (endo,endo)-bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylate dianion (C9H8O42-
)
is also coordinated to metal ions. The complexes were characterized by ele-
mental analysis (C, H, N), FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, molar conductivity
determination and magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature.
The analytical data of the complexes show the formation of binuclear
[Ni2(C9H8O4)tpmc](ClO4)2·4H2O and tetranuclear [Zn4(C9H8O4)(tpmc)2](ClO4)6·
·CH3CN·KClO 4·4H2O complexes. In tetranuclear Zn(II) complex bicyclic
dicarboxylate ligand is most likely to be bridge coordinated, and in binuclear
Ni(II) complex it is coordinated in a combined bridged manner with chelate
rings formation. In both complexes macrocyclic ligand was exo coordinated,
out of cyclam ring and adopts a boat conformation. The Zn(II) complex is one
of the rare tetranuclear Zn(II)-tpmc complexes with carboxylate ion bridging
two Zn2tpmc units. The complexes were tested for antibacterial activity against
Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Bacillus
subtilis (ATCC 6633), Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli (ATCC
25922), and yeast Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), and were screened for
antiproliferative activity against human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and
human myelogenous leukemia (K562) cell lines.
