AB - Background: The uneven lipid-lowering statin effects and
statin intolerance raise interest regarding the involvement
of coadministration of statins and dietary supplements.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of octacosanol
supplementation on markers of redox status in cardiovascular patients on chronic atorvastatin therapy.
Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled,
single-centre study was conducted. Redox status home-
ostasis parameters i.e., advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), total
oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), total protein sulfhydryl (SH-
groups), and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity were
assessed in 81 patients. According to favorable changes in
lipid profile, patients were classified into two groups:
responders (n = 35) and non-responders (n = 46), and
followed for 13 weeks. A principal component analysis
(PCA) was applied to explore the effect of octacosanol supplementation and the relationship between investigated
parameters as predictors of responders’ and non-responders’ status.
Results: Significant decrease in Oxy-score value was found
at the endpoint compared to baseline in responders’ group (21.0 (13.4–25.5) versus 15.1 (12.4–18.0); P < 0.01).
PCA analysis extracted 4 significant factors in the both
groups, whereas extracted factors containing »octacosanol
status« variable explained 14.7% and 11.5% of the variance
in responders’ and non-responders’ subgroups, respectively.
Conclusions: Octacosanol supplementation leads to an
improvement of lipid profile and markers of redox status in
responders’ group. New studies are needed to validate our
results in order to find the best approach for personalized
supplementation as a useful adjunct to standard statin
therapy.
U serumu 81 pacijenta određivani su parametri redoks statusa [produkti uznapredovale oksidacije proteina (AOPP), prooksidativno-antioksidativni balans (PAB), totalni oksidativni status (TOS), totalni antioksidativni status (TAS), aktivnost superoksid dismutaze (SOD), sulfihidrilne grupe (SH-grupe) i aktivnost paraoksonaze 1 (PON1)]. Zaključak: Suplementacija oktakozanolom dovodi do poboljšanja lipidnog profila i markera redoks statusa u grupi respondera.

AB - OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine any differences in ox- idative stress and inflammation parameters in COPD patients treated with either N-acetyl cys- teine (NAC) alone or with NAC in combination with propolis (NACP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty COPD pa- tients in the exacerbation phase were enrolled into the study and were treated with either NAC (NAC group; n=20) or NACP (NACP group; n=20) twice daily for one month. Redox status was de - termined by measuring superoxide anion (O 2 .– ), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total oxidative status (TOS), prooxidative-anti- oxidant balance (PAB), malondialdehyde (MDA), ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and sever- al other antioxidant markers: superoxide dis- mutase (SOD), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), total sulf- hydryl groups (SHG) and total antioxidant status (TAS). Interleukins 6, 8 and 17 were measured as markers of inflammatory status. RESULTS: Both groups had similar socio-de - mographic and clinical characteristics. Af- ter treatment significantly higher SHG [0.446 (0.395-0.516) vs. 0.292 (0.270-0.325), p<0.001] and significantly lower TOS – 50.6 [49.7-53.4 vs. 73.2 (50.9-84.6), p<0.05] – and IMA [0.650 (0.629-0.682) vs. 0.709 (0.667-0.756), p<0.05] – were found in the NACP group compared to the NAC group. Factorial analysis indicated a larger oxidative stress-inflammatory load in the NAC group after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: From an oxidative stress and inflammatory status perspective, treatment with NACP was more successful than with NAC. The inclusion of propolis into therapy for COPD patients, especially those in the exacerbation phase, could prove beneficial.

AB - Background: Literature data indicate the benefit of magne-
sium (Mg) supplementation. The aim of this study was to
examine the effect of short-term Mg supplementation on
iron status in healthy female participants.
Methods: One hundred healthy female students of the
University of Belgrade - Faculty of Pharmacy participated the
study during eleven intervention days. Students ingested Mg
preparations with the same dose of the active substance. The
analysis included the measurement of serum iron, unsaturat-
ed iron binding capacity (UIBC), total iron binding capacity
(TIBC), total Mg (tMg), ionized Mg (iMg), complete blood
count, met-, carboxy- and oxy-haemoglobin (metHgb,
COHgb, O2Hgb). Transferrin concentrations and percentage
of transferrin saturation (SAT) were calculated manually. The
association among the analyzed biochemical parameters was
examined using polynomial regression. A principal compo-
nent analysis (PCA) was used for the evaluation of interde-
pendence between the analyzed parameters.
Results: A statistically significant trend for change in O2Hgb
(%) by tertiles of iMg concentrations was found (P = 0.029).
Serum tMg reached significant positive correlation with the
SAT at concentration levels greater than 0.9 mmol/L, after
11 days of intervention (R2=0.116). Ionized Mg in a con-
centration higher than 0.6 mmol/L is positively correlated
with SAT and serum Fe (R2=0.214; 0.199, respectively).
PCA revealed variability of 64.7% for two axes after 11 days.
Conclusions: Mg supplementation leads to an improvement
in the certain iron status parameters even in individuals with
optimal levels of these indices. However, caution should be
exercised when supplementing Mg, and laboratory monitor-
ing of the interaction is required.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of three magnesium (Mg) dietary supplements containing mineral immediately available for absorption on Mg biochemical status indices (ionized and total Mg), as well as their effects on electrolytes levels in healthy female young adults (n = 61). After a 10-days intervention period supplementation with powder/granulate containing Mg oxide led to an increase in both ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg in comparison with the baseline. Supplementation with Mg citrate was associated with the significant increase in % of ionized fraction and decrease in serum total Mg concentration. By contrast, among participants consuming Mg carbonate in the form of effervescent tablets ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg decreased, without detectable changes in serum total Mg. In conclusion, after the short-term supplementation period, Mg oxide demonstrated superior bioavailability compared to the other examined Mg supplements without affecting other minerals’ levels.

AB - Many types of vegetable oils produce around the world. They are useful in nutrition,
prevention and treatment of diseases. Some oils traditionally have been well known for a long
time and have been shown many potential health benefits, such as, cardioprotective effect,
effect on digestion, risk of some cancer and it is also used in the treatment of skin infections.
This work was conducted to study some quality criteria of oil extracted from seven different
raw seeds purchased in the Serbian market, namely: sunflowers, sesame seeds, black sesame
seeds, tickles seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds and hemp seeds. Oils are essentially regarded in
terms of quality based on their free fatty acid, iodine value and peroxides value. Oils were
extracted from the seeds by cold extraction with petroleum ether. Quality characteristics,
such as refractive index, acid value, peroxide value, iodine value and saponification value and
unsaponifiable matter were determined. For the determination of these parameters, official
methods (ISO 6320; ISO660; ISO 3960; ISO 3961; ISO 3657 and ISO 18609, respectively) were
used. The contents of investigated parameters in seed samples were determined in the range
of 1.467 to 1.485 nD for refractive index; 1.62 to 4.95 mg KOH/g for acid value; 5.21 to 7.45
for peroxide value; 118 to 197 for iodine value; 180 to 193 for saponification value and 3.14
to 7.26 g/kg for the unsaponifiable matter.
Data obtained in this investigation indicate that all quality parameters of the seed samples,
except peroxide value , comply with the national and Codex standards.

AB - Obesity could be associated with enhanced platelet (PL) function and thrombosis.
Also, changes in gut microbiota composition were observed in obese patients, and probiotics
supplementation has been shown to improve some of the obesity-associated metabolic
parameters. This study aimed to determine the possible effects of probiotic supplementation
on platelet morphology in overweight/obese premenopausal women.Twenty overweight
(BMI = 25.0-29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2) women participated in double-
blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. They were randomly assigned to receive one
capsule daily of probiotics (7x1010 CFU Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843), 5x109
CFU Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii and 40mg octacosanol; N=10) or placebo
(N=10) for 3 months. To determine changes in the parameters of platelet activation - the
platelet count (PC), platelet distribution width (PDW), Feret diameter, and hypogranular
appearance, blood samples were obtained for an automated hematology analyser and
peripheral smears staining. Although difference in PC was not found between groups,
supplementation with probiotics decreased PDW compared to the placebo group (p<0.05).
Regarding platelets diameter, there is an decrease in group supplemented with probiotics
compared to placebo, however, a statistical difference has not been reached. Further, the
proportion of hypogranular PL was increased in a probiotic-supplemented group compared
to the placebo group (p<0.01). In conclusion, probiotic supplementation achieved
improvements in platelets morphology and hematological indices in overweight/obese
premenopausal women.
karakteristike krvnih pločica u randomizovanoj, dvostruko-slepoj, placebo-kontrolisanoj
studiji.
tokom tri meseca (kombinaciju soja Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843),
pločica i mogućnost primene probiotika u regulaciji njihove aktivnosti u patološkim
stanjima.

Influence of various dietary regimes upon immunity

AB - Although it is considered that optimal nutrition could provide all essential nutrients
and active compounds, various dietary regimes are often not following the relevant
recommendations. On the contrary, nutritional status is closely related to the immune
system. Namely, insufficient caloric intake or a lack of a nutrient can primarily weaken the
immune response. The gastrointestinal tract plays an essential role in the function of the
immune system, which is both the place of absorption of nutrients and the body's immune
defence. Globally, the most prominent cause of immunodeficiencies is undernutrition and
starvation, up to 50 % of undeveloped countries' populations. Undernutrition negatively
affects both innate and adaptive immunity; considering these facts, it is clear that a
prolonged low caloric intake could affect immunity adversely. Since the sixties, World Health
Organisation has considered relations between nutrition and immunity, and nutritional
immunology is a newer scientific discipline. Later, the precise relationship between low
protein intake and lymphoid tissue involution was defined. Generally, the deficiencies of
energy, proteins, iron, iodine, vitamin A, zinc and calcium are the most common. It is
estimated that every third person is being affected globally. Prolonged hypercaloric intake
and resulting obesity could also exhibit immunocompromising effects through inflammation
and hyperactivation of the immune system. The negative impact on the immune system
could also be provoked by intense physical activity, infective agents, and emotional stress.
Pothranjenost dovodi
do poremećaja i urođenog i stečenog imunskog odgovora.
ovu temu. Sedamdesetih je uspostavljena jasna veza izmedju proteinske malnutricije i
involucije limfoidnog tkiva, pa i timusa. Globalno, među najzastupljenijijim deficitima su
deficit energetskog unosa, proteina, gvožđa, joda, vitamina A, D, cinka i kalcijuma, a procena
Dugotrajan
prekomeran kalorijski unos kao i posledična gojaznost, takođe mogu ispoljiti
imunokompromitujući efekat i to kroz inflamaciju, kao i hiperaktivaciju imunskog odgovora.
Negativan efekat na imunski sistem mogu imati i veoma intenzivan fizički napor, kao i
psihički stress, i različiti infektivni agensi.

ovu temu. Sedamdesetih je uspostavljena jasna veza izmedju proteinske malnutricije i
involucije limfoidnog tkiva, pa i timusa. Globalno, među najzastupljenijijim deficitima su
deficit energetskog unosa, proteina, gvožđa, joda, vitamina A, D, cinka i kalcijuma, a procena
Dugotrajan
prekomeran kalorijski unos kao i posledična gojaznost, takođe mogu ispoljiti
imunokompromitujući efekat i to kroz inflamaciju, kao i hiperaktivaciju imunskog odgovora.
Negativan efekat na imunski sistem mogu imati i veoma intenzivan fizički napor, kao i
psihički stress, i različiti infektivni agensi.",

AB - Nuts and seeds are an indispensable part of the plant-based diet, which is becoming increasingly popular due to the evidence of their health benefits and contribution to sustainability and planetary health. Since the health effects of consuming nuts and seeds directly depend on their nutritional composition and consumed amount, it is essential to know the exact chemical composition of each nut and seed so that appropriate dietary interventions can be adequately planned. The present study aimed to examine the chemical composition of nuts and seeds obtained from the Serbian market and to highlight the similarities and differences in their nutritional composition. In twenty-four samples of nuts and seeds, the content of total lipids, including fatty acid profile, total proteins, including amino acid profile, total carbohydrates (sugars and fibers), phytosterols, and minerals were determined. Content of selected nutrients in grams (g) or milligrams (mg) of nuts and seeds was expressed in one portion (28 g) and as a percentage of contribution of Reference Intakes (% RI) and Dietary Reference Value (% DRV) for macronutrients and minerals, respectively. Some of the seed representatives appeared to be rich sources of essential omega-3 fatty acid, α-linolenic acid (ALA) (flax seed vs. walnut, 6.50 vs. 0.56 g per portion, respectively), dietary fibers (chia seed vs. raw almond, 10.6 vs. 3.4 g per portion, respectively), calcium (black sesame seed vs. almond roasted, 32.4% NRV vs. 8.1% NRV per portion, respectively), magnesium (hemp seed vs. Brazil nut, 38.3% NRV vs. 27.8% NRV per portion, respectively), and zinc (hemp seed vs. pine nut, 21.4% NRV vs. 17.6% NRV per portion, respectively). Our results highlighted the crucial role of seeds in the diet, especially as a better source of nutrients compared to nuts. Furthermore, it was seen that nuts and seeds are different and complementary in their composition. Thus, in order to meet the needs for certain nutrients for which nuts and seeds are used as dietary sources (essential fatty acids, minerals, dietary fibers), it would be beneficial to combine both nuts and seeds as a part of a healthy dietary pattern.

AB - This study aimed to investigate the effect of supplementation with plant origin superoxide dismutase (SOD), GliSODin, on parameters of muscle damage, metabolic, and work performance at international level rowers. Twenty-eight rowers were included in a randomized, double-blind study. The study was conducted during a 6-week preparation period. At the beginning of the study and after 6 weeks of the supplementation period, all rowers were tested on a rowing ergometer. Blood samples were taken from the antecubital vein before and after every ergometer testing. Muscle damage markers creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), inflammation parameters interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Rowing performance was assessed by lactate level in capillary blood and power output on the rowing ergometer. After supplementation, experimental group had significantly lower CK (p = 0.049) and IL-6 (p = 0.035) before and IL-6 (p = 0.050) after exhausting exercise on ergometer. Relative change of power output at 4 mmol/L concentration of lactate in blood, considering the initial and final test, was significantly higher (p = 0.020) in the supplemented group. It was concluded that GliSODin could be considered a good supplement in preventing some deleterious effects of intensive physical activity, including inflammation and muscle damage, and consequently, to enable a better rowing performance of elite rowers.

AB - Increased interest in microbiota calls for the thorough analysis of antibody reactivity to different microorganisms. As salivary IgA represents the first line of defence against microorganisms contacting mucosal surfaces, we explored the binding and specificity of salivary IgA by testing the binding of purified, FITC-labelled salivary IgA to different microorganisms in flow cytometry and conclude that this kind of analysis enables the differentiation of species/strains with high IgA binding capacity, which should be corroborated on a larger sample size. Further we compare, with in-house ELISA, the binding of polyclonal salivary IgA with the binding of polyclonal serum IgA from the same individuals to whole microbial cells and to purified microbial components. High correlations were obtained in total salivary IgA binding to Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Escherichia coli, very distant bacterial species, as well as to isolated bacterial components (r =.70–.97). The binding of total salivary IgA resembled the binding of both salivary IgA1 and IgA2, with IgA2 predominating. For serum polyclonal IgA repertoire, substantially higher specificity was obtained. Serum IgA binding to E. coli correlated best with serum IgA binding to lipopolysaccharide (r =.86), and serum IgA against L. rhamnosus correlated best with the anti-peptidoglycan IgA levels (r =.88). We have also detected that total serum IgA response is governed by either IgA1 or IgA2 response, depending on the nature of the antigen/s. We conclude that steady state salivary IgA repertoire, unlike serum IgA repertoire, consists of polyreactive antibodies with innate specificity, questioning its capacity to select resident microbiota.

AB - Dietary supplementation with sugar cane derivates may modulate low-density lipoproteincholesterol (LDL-C) and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) levels. The purposeof this study was to determine if dietary supplement (DS), containing Octacosanol (20 mg) andvitamin K2 (45μg), could restore the disrupted physiologic relation between LDL-C and serumPCSK9. Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-center study including 87 patients onchronic atorvastatin therapy was conducted. Eighty-seven patients were randomized to receive DS(n= 42) or placebo (n= 45), and followed for 13 weeks. Serum PCSK9 levels, lipid parameters andtheir relationship were the main efficacy endpoints. The absolute levels of PCSK9 and LDL-C werenot significantly different from baseline to 13 weeks. However, physiologic correlation between %change of PCSK9 and % change of LDL-C levels was normalized only in the group of patients treatedwith DS (r= 0.409,p= 0.012). This study shows that DS can restore statin disrupted physiologicpositive correlation between PCSK9 and LDL-C. Elevated PCSK9 level is an independent risk factorso controlling its rise by statins may be important in prevention of cardiovascular events.

AB - The impact of diet and fibre fractions on adipocytokines in obese subjects with a risk of diabetes has not been investigated in detail yet. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of a 12-month lifestyle intervention with different fibre profiles (resistant starch (RS)—rich fibre, or ordinary food fibre profiles) on adipocytokine levels. Fifty participants are divided into two groups (RS group and Fibre group). The groups differ only in the percentage of the recommended level of the RS consumed as a fraction of the same total fibre amount. The applied dietary intervention includes intake of 7531 KJ/daywith a total fibre portion of 25–35 g/dayfor both groups that includes 15 g/day of RS for the RS group only. The levels of leptin, adiponectin, apelin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and C-reactive protein (CRP) are measured, and their relationship to anthropometric and biochemical parameters is estimated. Along with significant body weight loss, only leptin is significantly reduced by 13% in the RS group while in the Fibre group, apelin levels are significant (−21%). Polynomial regression shows a negative correlation between RS intake and adiponectin (R2 = 0.145) and resistin level (R2 = 0.461) in the RS group. This study indicates the possibility that fibre fractions differently influence the outcome of lifestyle interventions, as well as their adipocytokine levels, in obese prediabetic adults.

AB - In recent decades, probiotic products have been increasingly used to prevent certain gastrointestinal and urogenital disorders, to improve the general condition of the body and as a supplement to pharmacological therapy. They are most often registered as dietary supplements, and less often as drugs in the form of capsules, powders, and solutions. Optimization of technological processes of production and packaging of these products aims to maintain probiotic characteristics while adhering to all criteria during production that ensure quality, bioavailability and optimal therapeutic effects. In this paper, the importance of choosing primary and secondary packaging materials was explored with the aim of preserving the viability of probiotic cells in capsules for two years, i.e. during the shelf life. By comparing the applications of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and PVC/polyvinylidene chloride/polyethylene blister foils, better protection of probiotic cells was observed by applying the multilayer foil. In addition, in this research, further improvements of probiotic cell protection were achieved by applying a secondary packing-flow pack bag with inert gas for storing multilayered blisters.

AB - This study investigated the behavior of urban-living students related to the salty snacks consumption, and their contribution to salt daily intake. A cross-sectional survey on 1313 urban-living students (16–25 years, 61.4% university students and 38.6% high school students) used a pre-verified questionnaire created specifically for the study. The logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors influencing snack consumption. The results of salt content and the snack consumption frequency were used to evaluate snack contribution to salt intake. All subjects consumed salty snacks, on average several times per week, more often at home and slightly more during periods of intensive studying, with 42% of the participants reporting to consume two or more packages per snacking occasion. Most of the participants consumed such products between main meals, but 10% of them took snacks immediately after the main meal. More high-school students than university students were in the “high snack group” (p < 0.05). The most frequently consumed salty snacks were those with the highest content of salt. Salt intake from snack products for a majority of participants ranged between 0.4 and 1 g/day. The research revealed younger age, home environment and significant contribution to salt intake as critical points in salty snack consumption among urban-living students important for the better understanding of their dietary habits.

AB - The surface of microorganisms is covered with polysaccharide structures which are in immediate contact with receptor structures on host’s cells and antibodies. The interaction between microorganisms and their host is dependent on surface glycosylation and in this study we have tested the interaction of plant lectins with different microorganisms. Enzyme-linked lectin sorbent assay - ELLSA was used to test the binding of recombinant Musa acuminata lectin - BL to 27 selected microorganisms and 7 other lectins were used for comparison: Soy bean agglutinin - SBA, Lens culinaris lectin - LCA, Wheat germ agglutinin - WGA, RCA120 - Ricinus communis agglutinin, Con A - from Canavalia ensiformis, Sambucus nigra agglutinin - SNA I and Maackia amurensis agglutinin - MAA. The goal was to define the microorganisms’ surface glycosylation by means of interaction with the selected plant lectins and to make a comparison with BL. Among the tested lectins most selective binding was observed for RCA120 which preferentially bound Lactobacillus casei DG. Recombinant banana lectin showed specific binding to all of the tested fungal species. The binding of BL to Candida albicans was further tested with fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry and it was concluded that this lectin can differentiate ß-glucan rich surfaces. The binding of BL to S. boulardii could be inhibited with ß-glucan from yeast with IC50 1.81 μg mL−1 and to P. roqueforti with 1.10 μg mL−1. This unique specificity of BL could be exploited for screening purposes and potentially for the detection of ß-glucan in solutions.

AB - This study aimed to estimate the potential of the selected berry (strawberry) and drupe (apricot, plum and sweet cherry) fruits as the substrates for the production of new fruit wines enriched with phenolic compounds. Sweet cherry wine (cultivar Burlat) stood out both for the profound content of phenolics (followed by their chemical profile) and potent anti-DPPH radical activity. The same fruit wine samples exhibited high redox potentials, slightly lower than strawberry and plum wine samples. Therefore, sweet cherry cultivar Burlat may be well recommended for development of novel fruit-based products endowed with naturally occurring phenolics. In any case, the remaining four cultivars are also worth further research efforts, particularly apricot cultivar Keckemetska ruza, which is one of the representatives of greatly underestimated fruit type thus far as a substrate for the production of the relevant fruit wines.

AB - alpha-Glucosidase inhibitory activity (AGL) of fruit wine samples made from blueberry, black chokeberry, blackberry, raspberry and sour cherry cultivars grown in Serbia was studied using an microvinification procedure. More precisely, both sugar and enzyme were added to the fruit must before fermentation for half of the samples. This increased the extraction of phenolic compounds. All the samples showed higher bioactivity compared to acarbose, the compound used as a positive control. Blueberry (IC50 similar to 27 +/- 1 mu g/ml) and black chokeberry (IC50 similar to 28 +/- 1 mu g/ml) wine samples had the highest values regardless of the vinification method. In addition to this, chlorogenic and caffeic acids were recognised as their key AGL bioactives. Taken all together, the fruit wine samples or their lyophilised extracts may be considered as complementary medicine supplements of potential interest for the control of postprandial hyperglycemia.

AB - Introduction - Fruit and their products, including fruit wines, represent a rich source of natural bioactive compounds. This study focusing on fruit wines (prepared from commercially grown fruits by Serbian producers) has included the investigation of their chemical composition and biological activity. Materials and methods - Black chokeberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and cherry were used for wine production by innovative vinification procedure, with or without using sugar and enzymatic preparation glycosidase, respectively. Selected phenolics were identified and quantified by UPLC/MS-MS analysis, while Total Phenolic Content (TPC) was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. In addition to this, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) methods were applied for the preliminary evaluation of anti-DPPH radical activity and redox potential respectively at in vitro conditions. Results and discussion - Among the fruit wines examined within this study, the blackberry one stood out for profound FRAP (115.23 mmol L-1 Fe2+), DPPH (1.11%) and TPC values (2,395 mg GAE L-1). On the other hand, the raspberry wine showed the lowest potential towards the aforementioned parameters. Using principal component analysis, these fruit wines were chemically differentiated, according to the predominant phenolic compounds. Conclusions - All fruit wine samples displayed a good antioxidant potential with the blackberry one being most potent. Such a finding is of particular importance for Serbia as one of the leading producers of this edible fruit both in Europe and rest of the world.

AB - Aim: Balanced nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits are very important, especially in young population. By this way it is possible to prevent many non-communicable diseases. As a health care professionals, pharmacists have very important role in this mission. The aim of this study was to evaluate basic nutritional knowledge and lifestyle habits of pharmacy undergraduate students in the context of their future health profession. Methods: The study group consisted of 591 European undergraduate pharmacy students. The data related to anthropometry, eating and lifestyle habits were obtained based on self-administered cross-sectional survey. Analysis of gender differences was performed using the chi-square test. Statistically significance was set at p value lt 0.05. Results: Anthropometric characteristics of students showed that 10.5 % female students were underweight, while 62.6% of the males were overweight and 0.7% were obese. Regular breakfast had 80.9% of the students. Breakfast skipping was statistically higher in male participants (p lt 0.05). Only 35% of students reported daily intake of vegetables. Also, low fruit consumption was observed in all students with statistically lower fruit intake in males (p lt 0.05). Consumption of alcohol, fried food and tobacco was not common among students. Basic principle of balanced nutrition was recognized by 58.4% of study population. Conclusion: Results of our study indicate that European pharmacy students have some unsatisfactory eating habits and nutritional knowledge which is already related to their inadequate nutritional status. Our finding suggests that increased level of nutritional education should be incorporated into European pharmacy curriculum.

AB - A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted, in order to evaluate if Lactobacillus helveticus Lafti (R) L10 (Lallemand Health Solutions, Montreal, Canada) supplementation during three months could influence oxidative markers in the population of elite athletes: triathletes, cyclists and endurance athletes. Twenty-two elite athletes were randomized to either placebo (n = 12) or probiotic (n = 10) groups. The probiotic group received 2x1010 colony forming units of Lafti (R) L10. Before and after the supplementation serum samples were collected. Markers of oxidative stress and anti-oxidative defense: superoxide dismutase (SOD), paraoxonase (PON), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, prooxidant-antioxidant balance, oxidative stress index, bilirubin, uric acid and albumin were determined in serum. Parameters of lipid status, as well as susceptibility to copper-induced oxidation of LDL particles in vitro were also determined. There was a significant interaction effect for MDA (p = 0.039), with a decrease in MDA in the probiotic group only (p = 0.049). There was a significant interaction effect for AOPP (p = 0.037), with a significant decrease in the probiotic group (p = 0.045). Interaction effect for SOD was approaching to formal significance (p = 0.108) and the post-hoc test showed a significant decrease in the probiotic group (p = 0.041) only. A significant correlation between AOPP and SOD (p = 0.012, r = -0.40) was found in the probiotic group at the end of the study. PON1 activity was decreased in both the probiotic (p = 0.032) and placebo group (p = 0.035). No significant changes in the remainder of the evaluated parameters were noted. In conclusion, probiotic strain Lafti (R) L10 exerts certain antioxidant potential, but further research is needed.

AB - The goal of this work was to elucidate similarities between microorganisms from the perspective of the humoral immune system reactivity in professional athletes. The reactivity of serum IgG of 14 young, individuals was analyzed to 23 selected microorganisms as antigens by use of the in house ELISA. Serum IgM and IgA reactivity was also analyzed and a control group of sex and age matched individuals was used for comparison. The obtained absorbance levels were used as a string of values to correlate the reactivity to different microorganisms. IgM was found to be the most cross reactive antibody class, Pearson's r = 0.7 +/- 0.92, for very distant bacterial species such as Lactobacillus and E. coli. High correlation in IgG levels was found for Gammaproteobacteria and LPS (from E. coli) (r = 0.77 for LPS vs. P. aeruginosa to r = 0.98 for LPS vs. E. coli), whereas this correlation was lower in the control group (r = 0.49 for LPS vs. P. aeruginosa to r = 0.66 for LPS vs. E. coli). The correlation was also analyzed between total IgG and IgG subclasses specific for the same microorganism, and IgG2 was identified as the main subclass recognising different microorganisms, as well as recognising LPS. Upon correlation of IgG with IgA for the same microorganism absence of or negative correlation was found between bacteria-specific IgA and IgG in case of Lactobacillus and Staphylococcusgeni, whereas correlation was absent or positive for Candida albicans, Enterococcusfaecalis, Streptococcus species tested in professional athletes. Opposite results were obtained for the control group. Outlined here is a simple experimental procedure and data analysis which yields functional significance and which can be used for determining the similarities between microorganisms from the aspect of the humoral immune system, for determining the main IgG subclass involved in an immune response as well as for the analysis of different target populations.

AB - Background: Fruit wines are well known for their profound health-promoting properties including both enzyme activations and inhibitions. They may act preventive in regard to diabetes melitus and other chronic diseases. Objectives: Potential alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of fruit wines made from blueberry, black chokeberry, blackberry, raspberry and sour cherry was the subject of this study. Method: In order to increase the alcohol content due to enriched extraction of total phenolics, sugar was added in the fruit pomace of the half of the examined fruit wine samples. Results: Compared with acarbose used as a positive control (IC50 = 73.78 mu g/mL), all fruit wine samples exhibited higher alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Indeed, blueberry wine samples stood out, both prepared with IC50 = 24.14 mu g/mL, lyophilised extract yield 3.23% and without IC50 = 46.39 mu g/mL, lyophilised extract yield 2.89% and with addition of sugar before fermentation. Chlorogenic acid predominantly contributed to alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the blueberry, black chokeberry and sour cherry wine samples. However, ellagic acid, a potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitor possessing a planar structure, only slightly affected the activity of the blueberry wine samples, due to the lower concentration. In addition to this, molecular docking study of chlorogenic acid pointed out the importance of binding energy (-8.5 kcal/mol) for the inhibition of the enzyme. Conclusion: In summary, fruit wines made from blueberry should be primarily taken into consideration as a medicinal food targeting diabetes mellitus type 2 in the early stage, if additional studies would confirm their therapeutic potential for the control of postprandial hyperglycemia.

abstract = "Background: Fruit wines are well known for their profound health-promoting properties including both enzyme activations and inhibitions. Conclusion: In summary, fruit wines made from blueberry should be primarily taken into consideration as a medicinal food targeting diabetes mellitus type 2 in the early stage, if additional studies would confirm their therapeutic potential for the control of postprandial hyperglycemia.",

AB - To test the influence of probiotic supplementation on humoral immune response, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Thirty athletes (24 males and 6 females, females: (V)over dotO(2)max 38.2 +/- 4.9 ml.kg(-1).min(-1), age 23.2 +/- 1.4 years; males: (V)over dotO(2)max 57.5 +/- 9.2 ml.kg(-1).min(-1), age 24.0 +/- 2.4 years, mean +/- SD) were randomized either to the probiotic group (Lactobacillus helveticus Lafti L10, 2 x 10(10) colony-forming units) or to the placebo group. Serum and saliva samples were collected at the baseline and after 14 weeks. Total and specific antibacterial antibody levels of IgM, IgG, and IgA classes were determined for different bacteria in the serum, and in saliva, total and specific antibacterial IgA levels were examined. Total IgM was elevated in both probiotic (18%, 15-20%; mean, 90% confidence interval; p = 0.02) and placebo group (35%, 22-47%; p = 0.02), without observed differences in changes between the groups. No significant changes in IgM levels specific for tested bacteria were found. Total IgG level was constant in both groups. A significant (16%, 22.8 to 35%, p = 0.04) reduction of anti-Enterococcus faecalis IgG was noted in the placebo group, in comparison with the probiotic group. There was a substantial decrease in total IgA level in the placebo group, when measured either in serum (15%, 12-18%, p = 0.04) or in saliva (35%, -1.4 to 53%, p = 0.03). Significantly reduced levels of serum anti-lactic acid bacteria IgA antibodies in the placebo group compared with the probiotic group were detected for Lactobacillus rhamnosus LA68 (24%, 5.8-42%, p = 0.02) and for L. rhamnosus LB64 (15%, 2.7-27%, p = 0.02). Probiotic administration could have beneficial effects on systemic humoral and mucosal immune responses.
