AB - Fast inverted, oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions, also known as SWitch-Oil-Phase (SWOP) emulsions, express the performances of both o/w and water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions during application to the skin, favoring their use as cosmetic carriers in sunscreen products. The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant potential (by 2 different methods) and the ultraviolet (UV) absorption ability of SWOP emulsion (S) with incorporated plant-based antioxidants dihydroquercetin (DHQ) and β-carotene (βC), using quercetin (Q) in a reference emulsion, in addition to the evaluation of their physicochemical properties and stability. A new biochemical extra- cellular model for in vitro assessment of antioxidative properties for the SWOP emulsions (S, SQ, SDHQ, and SDHQβC) was developed and compared with the results of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The analyses were performed at 20 °C and 37 °C, and oxidative stress parameters were monitored and statistically analyzed. The sun protection factor (SPF) of the samples was determined in vitro. Q and DHQ incorporated into the SWOP emulsion exhibited a strong DPPH radical scavenging ability. Neither incorporated nor pure βC showed DPPH radical scavenging ability at the tested concentrations. Contrary to that, in the bioenvironment conditions, SDHQβC showed minor antioxidative effects increase and also a significant decrease in exogenous pro-oxidative effects, caused by pro-oxidant, when compared to SDHQ. The obtained SPFs of SDHQβC, SDHQ, and SQ were 5.19, 4.65, and 3.35, respectively. The phys- icochemical stability of the emulsions was satisfactory during 1 month storage. The presented results demonstrated that the SWOP emul- sion is a suitable carrier for antioxidants with a photoprotective ability. The novel biochemical approach could be used in addition to DPPH assay with several advantages, relevant for the testing of antioxidant activity of potential active ingredients in cosmetic products.

AB - This work is focused on nine Heracleum taxa (Apiaceae): H. sphondylium, H. sibiri- cum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenai- cum subsp. orsinii and H. verticillatum, belonging to the H. sphondylium group, and H. orphanidis, all from sect. Heracleum, as well as H. austriacum subsp. siifolium from sect. Wendia. The aim was to isolate the headspace (HS) fractions from 17 fruit samples (collected from all nine Heracleum taxa) and 13 root samples (col- lected from all eight taxa belonging to sect. Heracleum), to investigate their com- position and chemosystematic significance, as well as to compare these results with those previously obtained for the essential oils isolated by hydrodistillation from the same fruit and root samples. The HS fractions were isolated using an automatic static HS sampler and analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The fruit HS fractions were dominated by octyl acetate and/or α-pinene (the taxa from the sect. Heracle- um), or n-octanol (H. austriacum), whereas the root HS fractions mainly contained β-pinene and/or (Z)-β-ocimene (the taxa from the H. sphondylium group), or n-nonane (H. orphanidis). The chemosystematic significance was evaluated using multivariate statistical methods: principal component analysis (PCA), non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering based on the unweighted pair-group arithmetic average (UPGMA) algorithm. As in the case of previously investigated essential oils, the statistical analysis of the fruit and root HS fractions generally resulted in the grouping of the investigated H. sphondy- lium group representatives, and within this group, the grouping of morphologically related H. sphondylium and H. montanum and the isolated position of H. verticil- latum. The statistical analysis of the root HS fractions resulted in better separation of the taxa (even compared to previous analysis of the essential oils), i.e. isolated positions of H. ternatum and H. pyrenaicum were observed.

Niketić (Fabaceae) is a dwarfish shrub,
which range includes eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula (Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia) (1).
The aim of the investigation was to chemically characterize aerial flowering parts of this
plant: the dried methanol extract (TM), its alkaloid (AF) and non-alkaloid (NAF) fractions,
and to assess their ability and the ability of detected flavonoids to inhibit enzymes
acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), in vitro in the Ellman
spectrophotometric test. Plant material was collected in eastern Serbia (Jelašnička Klisura
gorge), dried, powdered and extracted with methanol, after dichloromethane pre-extraction.
Using solvents of different polarities and pH value, AF (yield 14.35%) and NAF (yield
57.78%) were obtained from TM. By LC-MS analysis, flavonoids luteolin-8-C-
glucosylpentoside (159.81 mg/g), genistin (22.38 mg/g), vitexin (6.32 mg/g), rutin (4.25
mg/g), and genistein (0.86 mg/g) were detected and quantified in TM, while luteolin-8-C-
glucosylpentoside (212.70 mg/g), rutin (1.38 mg/g), and genistin (1.03 mg/g) in NAF. Using
GC-FID-MS analysis, quinolizidine alkaloids sparteine, 17-oksosparteine, and lupanine were
identified in AF. TM and NAF exhibited significant and comparable anti-cholinesterase
activity (IC50AChE 0.54 and 0.72 mg/mL; IC50BuChE 0.45 and 0.68 mg/mL). All detected
flavonoids evinced the ability to inhibit enzymes; the most active were genistein and vitexin
(IC50AChE 54.75 and 88.35 μg/mL; IC 50BuChE 27.83 and 49.77 μg/mL). Considering the
quinolizidine alkaloids toxicity and AF poor anti-cholinesterase activity, it might be
concluded, regarding safety profile and medical potential, that the fraction of the herb
methanol extract, flavonoid-rich and alkaloid-free (NAF), is good candidate for further
research.
AB - Chamaecytisus heuffelii subsp. jankae (Velen.) Niketić (Fabaceae) je polužbun, koji
raste na području istočnog dela Balkanskog poluostrva (Albanija, Bugarska, Srbija) (1). Cilj
butirilholinesterazu (BChE).
(prinos 14,35%) i NAF (prinos 57,78%). LC-MS analizom, u TM detektovani su i
kvanitikovani flavonoidi luteolin-8-C-glukozilpentozid (159,81 mg/g), genistin (22,38 mg/g),
viteksin (6,32 mg/g) i rutin (4,25 mg/g) i genistein (0,86 mg/g), a u NAF luteolin-8-C-
glukozilpentozid (212,70 mg/g), rutin (1,38 mg/g) i genistin (1,03 mg/g). GC-FID-MS
analizom, u AF identifikovani su hinolizidinski alkaloidi spartein, 17-oksospartein i lupanin.
TM i NAF ispoljili su značajnu i uporedivu antiholinesteraznu aktivnost (IC50AChE 0,54 i 0,72
mg/mL; IC 50BChE 0,45 i 0,68 mg/mL). Svi detektovani flavonoidi su pokazali sposobnost da
inhibiraju enzime; najaktivniji su bili genistein i viteksin (IC 50AChE 54,75 i 88,35 μg/mL;
IC 50BuChE 27,83 i 49,77 μg/mL). Uzimajući u obzir toksič nost hinolizidinskih alkaloida i slabu
herbe bogata flavonoidima i oslobođena alkaloida (NAF), u pogledu bezbednosnog profila i
lekovitog potencijala dobar kandidat za dalja ispitivanja.

methanol extract, flavonoid-rich and alkaloid-free (NAF), is good candidate for further
research., Chamaecytisus heuffelii subsp. jankae (Velen.) Niketić (Fabaceae) je polužbun, koji
raste na području istočnog dela Balkanskog poluostrva (Albanija, Bugarska, Srbija) (1). Cilj
butirilholinesterazu (BChE).
(prinos 14,35%) i NAF (prinos 57,78%). LC-MS analizom, u TM detektovani su i
kvanitikovani flavonoidi luteolin-8-C-glukozilpentozid (159,81 mg/g), genistin (22,38 mg/g),
viteksin (6,32 mg/g) i rutin (4,25 mg/g) i genistein (0,86 mg/g), a u NAF luteolin-8-C-
glukozilpentozid (212,70 mg/g), rutin (1,38 mg/g) i genistin (1,03 mg/g). GC-FID-MS
analizom, u AF identifikovani su hinolizidinski alkaloidi spartein, 17-oksospartein i lupanin.
TM i NAF ispoljili su značajnu i uporedivu antiholinesteraznu aktivnost (IC50AChE 0,54 i 0,72
mg/mL; IC 50BChE 0,45 i 0,68 mg/mL). Svi detektovani flavonoidi su pokazali sposobnost da
inhibiraju enzime; najaktivniji su bili genistein i viteksin (IC 50AChE 54,75 i 88,35 μg/mL;
IC 50BuChE 27,83 i 49,77 μg/mL). Uzimajući u obzir toksič nost hinolizidinskih alkaloida i slabu
herbe bogata flavonoidima i oslobođena alkaloida (NAF), u pogledu bezbednosnog profila i
lekovitog potencijala dobar kandidat za dalja ispitivanja.",

AB - The genus Hieracium L. s. str. (Cichorieae, Asteraceae) is one of the most taxonomically complex genera of flowering plants. Chemosystematic significance of triterpenes especially for Asteraceae genera is scarcely assessed. The subject of this research are 28 Hieracium species from Balkan Peninsula (mostly collected at Mt Durmitor, Montenegro): 12 principal belonging to sections Pannosa, Naegeliana, Drepanoidea and Villosa, and 16 hybridogenous originated from the species from those four sections and Glauciformia, Hieracium, Prenanthoidea and/or Italica. Previously, in dried dichloromethane extracts of flowering aerial plant parts, α-amyrin and α-amyrin acetate, as well as β-amyrin, β-amyrin acetate and/or lupeol acetate were identified and quantified using GC-FID-MS. The aim was to evaluate chemosystematic significance of these five triterpenes using multivariate statistical methods (principal components analysis-PCA and non-metric multidimensional scaling-nMDS). Statistical analysis supported the current taxonomical classification of the investigated species, despite overlapping of certain groups. In PCA, all five triterpenes significantly contributed to the differences between the species. Moreover, lupeol acetate could be a significant chemosystematic marker for the most of principal species belonging to the section Pannosa, as well as for some hybridogenous species between H. gymnocephalum Gris. ex Pant. and the members from the other sections.

AB - The wood-sage (woodland germander) Teucrium scorodonia L. is widespread in European Atlantic coast and in the western part of Central Europe, with some isolated populations in Mediterranean. Recently discovered population on the territory of Serbia, in the valley of Štavica river (vicinity of Loznica), represents the most eastern enclave in the species range. Preliminary chemical analysis of aerial flowering parts and its dried ethanol and hydroethanol (70% v/v) extracts, and assessment of antioxidant potential of selected (hydroethanol) extract were performed. Using appropriate spectrophotometrical methods, total polyphenols in herb (3.48%, expressed as pyrogallol), ethanol and hydroethanol extracts (100.05 and 96.65 mg gallic acid equivalents - GAE/g), tannins in herb (0.96%, expressed as pyrogallol), ethanol and hydroethanol extracts (11.86 and 12.31 mg GAE/g), flavonoids in herb, ethanol and hydroethanol extracts (0.19%, 0.83% and 0.74%, expressed as hyperoside) were quantified. Also, in ethanol and hydroethanol extracts dihydroxycinnamic acid derivatives were determined (8.96% and 8.37%, expressed as acteoside). By LC-MS, in selected (hydroethanol) extract, four flavonoid and five phenylethanoid glycosides were detected; verbascoside (acteoside) was identified and quantified (4.42%) using external standard. This extract exhibited significant total antioxidant activity (1.37 mmol Fe2+/g) and moderate anti-DPPH potential (SC50=51.28 μg/mL).

AB - In this work, composition and antioxidant activity of dry dichloromethane and methanol extracts of Heracleum ternatum Velen. (Apiaceae) leaves and flowers from Mt Durmitor (Montenegro) were investigated. Using LC-MS, five furanocoumarins were identified in leaf dichloromethane extract (accounting for 23.00 mg/g of dry extract) and eight in flower dichloromethane extract (60.47 mg/g). Dominant in leaf extract was heraclenin (11.64 mg/g), followed by imperatorin (5.90 mg/g), and in flower extract heraclenol (17.55 mg/g), followed by heraclenin (15.04 mg/g). LC-MS analysis revealed eight flavonol glycosides in leaf methanol extract (accounting for 16.18 mg/g of dry extract) and 11 in flower methanol extract (65.82 mg/g), as well as chlorogenic acid in both extracts (4.72 mg/g and trace, respectively). Among detected flavonoids, dominant was quercetin 7-O-rhamnosyl 3-O-glucoside (vincetoxicoside A; 7.95 and 16.77 mg/g), followed by biosides and triosides of kaempferol and methylquercetin. Content of total polyphenols, determined spectrophotometrically using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, was 87.29 and 98.12 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of dry methanol extracts. Among methanol extracts, polyphenol richer flower extract showed higher, spectrophotometrically determined, total antioxidant and anti-DPPH activities compared to leaf extract (FRAP=0.80 and 0.65 mmol Fe2+/g; DPPH SC50=83.12 and 90.95 μg/mL). Dichloromethane extracts showed lower anti-DPPH activity (SC50=860.58 and 515.76 μg/mL).

AB - In this study composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of roots, leaves,
stems and fruits of Prangos trifida (Mill.) Herrnst. & Heyn s.l. (Apiaceae) were investigated.
Plant material was collected in Sićevo Gorge (Kusača) in 2020. Essential oils were isolated by
hydrodistillation in Clevenger-type apparatus and analyzed by GC-FID-MS. Antimicrobial
activity was tested by microdilution method against food contaminants: Gram-positive
(Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes), Gram-negative bacteria
(Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae and Salmonella Typhimurium), and molds (Aspergillus
fumigatus, A. niger, A. versicolor, Penicillium funiculosum, P. verrucosum var. cyclopium and
Trichoderma harzianum); artificial food preservatives E211 and E224 were used as controls.
Dominant constituents of essential oils were monoterpenes (66.2-87.2%). Terpinolene
(36.2%) and p-cymene (11.5%) prevailed in root oil, (E)-β-ocimen (23.2%) and terpinolene
(18.1%) in leaf oil, p-cimen-8-ol (21.8%) and p-cimen (14.1%) in stem oil, and p-cimen
(25.4%) and limonene (14.4%) in fruit oil. Essential oils showed significant antifungal
activity (MIC=0.10-0.78 mg/mL; MFC=0.20-1.56 mg/mL), better compared to both tested
commercial preservatives, and interesting antibacterial activity (MIC=0.20-6.25 mg/mL;
MBC=0.39-12.5 mg/mL), which was in the case of root and stem oils better than activity of
both preservatives against S. aureus and B. cereus. It should be noted that composition of
tested oils was in accordance with composition of the oils of this plant from vicinity of
Madrid (1) and from Crimea (2), while their antimicrobial activity was tested in this work for
the first time. Obtained results justify further research of P. trifida essential oils as new
natural food preservatives.
ulja korena, listova, stabljika i plodova Prangos trifida (Mill.) Herrnst. & Heyn s.l. (Apiaceae).
GC-FID-MS. Antimikrobna aktivnost testirana je mikrodilucionom metodom na
kontaminantima hrane: Gram-pozitivnim (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus i Listeria
monocytogenes), Gram-negativnim bakterijama (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae i
Salmonella Typhimurium), i plesnima (Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, A. versicolor,
Penicillium funiculosum, P. verrucosum var. cyclopium i Trichoderma harzianum); kao
kontrole korišćeni su sintetski konzervansi E211 i E224. Dominantni sastojci etarskih ulja
bili su monoterpeni (66,2-87,2%). Najzastupljeniji u ulju korena bili su terpinolen (36,2%) i
p-cimen (11,5%), u ulju listova (E)-β-ocimen (23,2%) i terpinolen (18,1%), u ulju stabljika p-cimen-
8-ol (21,8%) i p-cimen (14,1%), a u ulju plodova p-cimen (25,4%) i limonen (14,4%).
Etarska ulja su pokazala značajnu antifungalnu aktivnost (MIK=0,10-0,78 mg/mL;
MFK=0,20-1,56 mg/mL), bolju u poređenju sa oba testirana komercijalna konzervansa, i
interesantnu antibakterijsku aktivnost (MIK=0,20-6,25 mg/mL; MBK=0,39-12,5 mg/mL),

Essential oils showed significant antifungal
activity (MIC=0.10-0.78 mg/mL; MFC=0.20-1.56 mg/mL), better compared to both tested
commercial preservatives, and interesting antibacterial activity (MIC=0.20-6.25 mg/mL;
Obtained results justify further research of P. trifida essential oils as new
ulja korena, listova, stabljika i plodova Prangos trifida (Mill.) Herrnst. & Heyn s.l. (Apiaceae).
GC-FID-MS. Antimikrobna aktivnost testirana je mikrodilucionom metodom na
kontaminantima hrane: Gram-pozitivnim (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus i Listeria
monocytogenes), Gram-negativnim bakterijama (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae i
Salmonella Typhimurium), i plesnima (Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, A. versicolor,
Penicillium funiculosum, P. verrucosum var. cyclopium i Trichoderma harzianum); kao
kontrole korišćeni su sintetski konzervansi E211 i E224. Dominantni sastojci etarskih ulja
bili su monoterpeni (66,2-87,2%). Najzastupljeniji u ulju korena bili su terpinolen (36,2%) i
p-cimen (11,5%), u ulju listova (E)-β-ocimen (23,2%) i terpinolen (18,1%), u ulju stabljika p-cimen-
8-ol (21,8%) i p-cimen (14,1%), a u ulju plodova p-cimen (25,4%) i limonen (14,4%).
Etarska ulja su pokazala značajnu antifungalnu aktivnost (MIK=0,10-0,78 mg/mL;
MFK=0,20-1,56 mg/mL), bolju u poređenju sa oba testirana komercijalna konzervansa, i
interesantnu antibakterijsku aktivnost (MIK=0,20-6,25 mg/mL; MBK=0,39-12,5 mg/mL),

AB - Composition and antimicrobial activity of root, leaf, stem, flower and fruit essential oils from
cultivated Pastinaca sativa subsp. sativa, and its two wild-growing relatives P. sativa subsp. urens
and P. hirsuta (Apiaceae) were investigated. Twenty-nine hydrodistilled essential oils of plants from
different localities and/or years were analysed by GC-FID and GC/MS. Dominant in root oils was
myristicin (P. sativa) or apiole (P. hirsuta), in leaf and stem oils myristicin (cultivated plants) or γ-palmitolactone (wild-growing plants) and in flower and fruit oils aliphatic esters. Multivariate
statistics (PCA, nMDS, UPGMA clustering) generally revealed separation of oils of investigated
Pastinaca taxa and demonstrated their chemosystematic significance. One oil per each organ of all three plants (fifteen in total) was tested using microdilution method for activity against Candida
tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, C. glabrata, C. albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium and Enterobacter cloacae; MIC = 0.25–8 mg/mL, MBC(MFC) = 0.5–16 mg/mL.

AB - The use of medicinal plants has significant impact on human health (1,2). Approximately 13.000 medicinal plants are used worldwide (1), and in developing countries 65-80% of the population uses them for medicinal purposes (2).
The aim of the study was to examine the awareness of patients in the city of Belgrade about herbal products. Quantitative, non-experimental research was conducted using a purpose-built questionnaire in public pharmacies during February 2020.
The survey involved 954 respondents, mostly women (66.5%); 39.1% of respondents aged 20-40 years. Most of the respondents were employed (65.2%), with secondary school education (45.2%). The vast majority (97.3%) used medicinal plants/herbal products, mostly occasionally, as needed (38.4%). The main motive for their use was health improvement (75.2%), while 16.2% used them to treat diseases. The primary sources of information on medicinal plants/herbal products are pharmacists (45.1%) and the media (24.2%). About a third of the respondents (37.3%) stated that they knew the difference between herbal medicinal products and dietary supplements. 52.9% of respondents claimed that herbal medicinal products are effective, but less than synthetic drugs, while 61.5% claimed that they are safe, but with certain side effects. A third of respondents (32.9%) had difficulty understanding instructions for use and they needed additional explanations. Majority (70.6%) received advice from a pharmacist when buying a herbal product.
Pharmacists are health professionals who have adequate knowledge of medicinal plants/herbal products and have a key role in advising patients in order to implement the proper use of herbal medicinal and other herbal products.

AB - Aim of this work was the chemical profiling of six Stachys taxa from Balkan Peninsula: S. recta subsp. nitens, S. atherocalyx, S. beckeana, S. zepcensis (all four belonging to S. recta group), S. alpina subsp. dinarica and S. plumosa. Dry ethanol extracts of aerial flowering plant parts were qualitatively and quantitatively characterized for their phenolic composition using the HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS technique. In total, 44 phenolic compounds were detected, belonging to three main classes of constituents: phenolic acids, phenylethanol glycosides (PhGs) and flavonoids. Chlorogenic acid was the main phenolic acid in all samples. Regarding PhGs, in all investigated extracts acteoside and lavandulifolioside were present. In S. recta group, extracts of S. atherocalyx, S. recta subsp. nitens and S. beckeana showed similar pattern considering phenylethanol glycosides, while S. zepcensis contained only the two aforementioned compounds. PhGs profile of S. plumosa extract comprised the same compounds from S. recta group, but it was also characterized by the presence of few high-molecular compounds. PhGs composition of S. alpina subsp. dinarica extract was somewhat similar with those of S. recta group and also with S. plumosa, but still specific by the presence of echinacoside and leucosceptoside A. The main flavonoids in extracts of Stachys recta group as well as in S. alpina subsp. dinarica extract were 8-hydroxyflavone glycosides (7-O-allosylglucosides of isoscutellarein and hypolaetin and their 4′-methyl derivatives). In addition, in the extract of S. alpina subsp. dinarica two luteolin-7-O-hexosides were also present. On the other hand, S. plumosa extract differed considerably containing mainly derivatives of chrysoeriol and apigenin, while 8-hydroxyflavones (isoscutellarein derivatives) were detected in traces. The results confirmed the importance of flavone 7-O-allosylglucosides at the sectional level of Stachys genus.

AB - Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities were tested for dried MeOH extracts of Hieracium calophyllum (CAL), H. coloriscapum (COL), H. pseudoschenkii (PSE), H. valdepilosum (VAL) and H. glabratum (GLA) herbs (flowering aerial parts), their 2 sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) 8-epiixerisamine A and crepiside E, and dried CH2Cl2 extract of H. scheppigianum (SCH) herb. In microdilution test, extracts showed activity on all tested microorganisms (8 bacteria, 10 fungi). The best effect was exhibited by SCH and CAL on Salmonella Typhimurium (MIC=1.7–2.5 mg/mL MBC=3.4–5.0 mg/mL), and SCH and VAL on Candida albicans (MIC=2.5 mg/mL MFC=5.0 mg/mL). SLs showed notable effect on all tested fungi Aspergillus ochraceus, Penicillium funiculosum, C. albicans and C. krusei (MIC=0.15–0.4 mg/mL MFC=0.3–0.8 mg/mL). In MTT test, extracts inhibited growth of all tested cancer cells (HeLa, LS174 and A549), with the best effect on HeLa (IC50=148.1 μg/mL for SCH, and 152.3–303.2 μg/mL for MeOH extracts); both SLs were active against HeLa cells (IC50=46.2 μg/mL for crepiside E and 103.8 μg/mL for 8-epiixerisamine A). Extracts and SLs showed good safety profile on normal MRC-5 cells.

AB - Dry MeOH extract of Ferula heuffelii (Apiaceae) underground parts was tested for spasmolytic, gastroprotective and antioxidant activities. HPLC analysis revealed that chlorogenic acid (CGA; 34.6 mg/g) was its main constituent. Extract in vitro exhibited notable total antioxidant activity (FRAP value=1.0 μmol Fe2+/mg), and scavenging of DPPH (SC50=62.5 μg/ml) and •OH radicals (49.5 % at 20 μg/ml in 2-deoxyribose assay). In vitro on isolated rat ileum, extract exhibited significant spasmolytic activity, i. e., it showed 124.6 % of maximal atropine effect on spontaneous contractions (at 100 μg/ml), and reduced spasmogenic effect of KCl (80 mm) to 44.4 % (at 60 μg/ml) and of highest applied concentration of ACh to 26.3 % (at 120 μg/ml). In parallel experiments, spasmolytic effect of CGA was also demonstrated. In acute EtOH-induced gastric ulceration model in rats, extract (100 mg/kg p.o.) showed significant gastroprotective effect (gastric damage score 0.50), similar to ranitidine (20 mg/kg p.o.). Obtained results showed that tested F. heuffelii polar extract represents new herbal preparation with potential use against some gastrointestinal complaints.

AB - Stachys milanii Petrović (Lamiaceae) is an endemic of central and eastern part of Balkan Peninsula, growing mainly in river valleys on semi-saline soils, often along the edge of cereal fields and abandoned arable lands. It is a critically endangered and strictly protected species in Serbia, with just one proven habitat (1). So far it was investigated on herb essential oil composition and antimicrobial activity, and on fatty acid composition of seeds (2).
Aim of this work was to investigate antiradical potential and phenolic constituents of dry methanol herb extract. Aerial flowering parts (herb) of S. milanii were collected in North Macedonia (Ovče Pole). Powdered, dried plant material was extracted by bimaceration with chloroform, and then with methanol. Obtained dry methanol extract was used for further analysis. Using appropriate spectrophotometric procedure strong, concentration-dependant anti-DPPH activity of extract was observed (SC50=34.15 μg/mL). Also spectrophotometrically, using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, significant total phenolics content (0,47 mg gallic acid/mg dry extract) was determined. In TLC-DPPH test observed yellow zones indicated presence of few compounds which strongly neutralized purple DPPH radical. LC-MS analysis revealed presence of one phenolic acid, four phenylethanol glycosides, eight flavonoid glycosides derivatives of 8-hydroxyflavones, and one apigenin glycoside. Using commercial standards in extract were identified and quantified: chlorogenic acid (1.63%) and acteoside (2.65%), as the main phenylethanoid. In 8-hydroxyflavones fraction six hypolaetine and two isoscutellarein derivatives were present; using compounds previously isolated from S. alpina subsp. dinarica Murb. herb, 4'-O-methylhypolaetine-7-O-[6'''-acetylallosyl(1®2)]-glucopyranoside and isoscutellarein-7-O-[6'''-acetylallosyl(1®2)]-glucopyranoside were identified, representing the most prominent flavonoids in investigated extract, respectively.

AB - INTRODUCTION:
Pastinaca sativa subsp. sativa L., Apiaceae (parsnip) is cultivated mainly in the temperate regions of the world because of its edible root. The roots of the best quality are obtained from the plants from the first year, in which this biennial plant usually forms only leaf rosette. In the second year, flowering stems emerge (the plant is cultivated for two years in order to obtain fruits for reproduction). Wild-growing P. sativa subsp. urens (Req. ex Godr.) Čelak. is widely distributed in Europe and P. hirsuta Pančić is endemic in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula (east Serbia, North Macedonia and south and west Bulgaria).

OBJECTIVES:
To investigate and compare the composition of the essential oils obtained from roots, leaves, stems, flowers and fruits of cultivated P. sativa subsp. sativa (from the first and/or the second year) and wild-growing P. sativa subsp. urens and P. hirsuta from Serbia.

METHOD / DESIGN:
Essential oils were isolated from dried and comminuted plant material by hydrodistillation using Clevenger-type apparatus for 2.5 h. The composition of essential oils was determined by GC-FID and GC-MS and analyzed using multivariate statistical methods: principal component analysis (PCA), non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and unweighted pair-group arithmetic averages clustering (UPGMA).

RESULTS:
Twenty-nine parsnip essential oils were investigated: 11 P. sativa subsp. sativa oils (from four localities; the oils of roots and leaves from both the first and the second year, and of the other organs from the second year), 10 P. sativa subsp. urens oils (from two localities) and eight P. hirsuta oils (from one locality, collected in two different years). Pastinaca sativa subsp. sativa
roots from the first year provided the highest oil yields (0.51-0.77%, w/w). The roots of this taxon from the second year (0.02%), and the roots of other investigated Pastinaca taxa (0.10-0.14%) had notably lower oil yields. Regarding other plant organs, high oil yields were generally obtained for fruits (1.40-3.90%) and flowers (0.43-0.93%), and low oil yields for leaves (0.07-0.16%) and stems (0.03-0.13%).
In general, 13 to 53 compounds were identified in the essential oils; identified components accounted for 89.4-98.6% of the oils. Phenylpropanoid myristicin was the most abundant in the root essential oils of both investigated P. sativa subspecies (39.7-82.5%). It is interesting to note that the oil of P. sativa subsp. sativa roots from the first year also contained high amounts of terpinolene (14.8-28.7%), which significantly decreased in the oil of this taxon from the second year (1.2%). In P. hirsuta root oils another phenylpropanoid apiole (30.9 and 25.8%) was dominant and the quantities of myristicin were somewhat lower (11.6 and 20.3%). Cultivated P. sativa subsp. sativa leaf essential oils were dominated by myristicin (42.8 and 41.4%) and in the leaf oils of wild-growing parsnips (P. sativa subsp. urens and P. hirsuta), γ-palmitolactone was the most abundant
(22.6-47.5%). Additionally, the leaf oils of both investigated P. sativa subspecies contained significant amounts of sesquiterpenes (36.0-46.2%), e.g. (E)-β-farnesene (13.8-22.4%). Compared with the leaf oils, corresponding stem oils were qualitatively similar. However, in the stem oils, the contents of sesquiterpenes were lower [e.g. (E)-β-farnesene 4.9-14.4% in P. sativa oils] and the contents of myristicin (64.9 and 63.3% in P. sativa subsp. sativa oils) and γ-palmitolactone (50.6-60.4% in wild-growing parsnips oils) were higher. The flower and fruit essential oils were dominated by aliphatic esters. The most abundant in P. hirsuta oils were hexyl butanoate (61.9% in the flower oil; 22.0 and 58.4% in the fruit oils) and hexyl hexanoate (17.0% in the flower oil; 59.8 and 29.1% in the fruit oils), and in the oils of both P. sativa subspecies the dominant was octyl butanoate (26.1-31.4% in the flower oils; 53.6-79.0% in the fruit oils). In PCA and nMDS analyses of the oils (except fruit oils), the separation of all three investigated Pastinaca taxa was noticed. The same relations were observed in UPGMA analyses of the leaf, stem and flower oils. In the case of statistical analysis of the fruit oils and UPGMA analysis of the root oils, the samples of two subspecies of P. sativa were grouped together.

CONCLUSIONS:
Wild-growing parsnips are equally interesting sources of essential oils as cultivated parsnip. Locality and year of collection did not significantly influence relations among taxa observed in multivariate statistical analysis.

abstract = "INTRODUCTION:

AB - INTRODUCTION:
Cultivated parsnip (Pastinaca sativa subsp. sativa L., Apiaceae) root is a well-known vegetable, common ingredient of soups, stews, salads, casseroles etc. Besides, its leaves and young shoots can be added to soups and fruits are used as a condiment. Furthermore, young shoots of wild-growing parsnips, e.g. P. sativa subsp. urens (Req. ex Godr.) Čelak., are consumed pickled
or in salads or soups and it is considered that their essential oil acts as a natural preservative.

OBJECTIVES:
To investigate and compare the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils obtained from the roots, leaves, stems, flowers and fruits of cultivated P. sativa subsp. sativa and wild-growing P. sativa subsp. urens collected in Serbia. Furthermore, the most active essential oil constituents (against the most susceptible microorganisms) were predicted in silico.

METHOD / DESIGN:
Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentrations (MBCs/MFCs) of the essential oils (isolated by hydrodistillation using Clevenger-type apparatus) were determined by microdilution method against three Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 11632, Bacillus cereus clinical isolate and Listeria monocytogenes NCTC 7973, three Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 13311 and Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 35030, three Candida standard strains: C. albicans ATCC 10231, C. tropicalis ATCC 750 and C. parapsilosis ATCC 22019, and three Candida isolates from oral cavity: C. albicans 475/15, C. krusei H1/16 and C. glabrata 4/6/15. Pharmacokinetic properties of the compounds present in at least one oil in the quantity ≥ 1% (determined by GC-FID and GC-MS) were initially evaluated using SwissADME web tool and molecular docking was performed using AutoDock Vina 1.1.2 (interactions were visualized using Discovery Studio Visualizer 2019).

RESULTS:
All the investigated essential oils of the two Pastinaca sativa subspecies were able to reduce the growth of different tested Candida strains (MIC range 0.25-2 mg/mL; MFC range 0.5-4 mg/mL). The most promising activity was observed for both root oils (MIC range 0.25-1 mg/mL; MFC range 0.5-2 mg/mL). Among investigated Candida strains, C. parapsilosis strain was the most sensitive to these essential oils (MIC range 0.25-1 mg/mL; MFC range 0.5-2 mg/mL). The antibacterial activity of the tested essential oils was lower compared to their anticandidal potential (MIC range 1-4 mg/mL; MBC range 2-8 mg/mL). Thirty compounds were present in at least one oil in the quantity ≥ 1%. Estimation of pharmacokinetic properties using SwissADME tool suggested that 23 of these compounds are inhibitors of some of the cytochrome P450 system isoenzymes. This fact led
to assumption that they could also act against fungal sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51), which is a common target of antifungal drugs (e.g., ketoconazole). Thus, the compounds (3D structures downloaded from PubChem) were docked to the active site of this enzyme (downloaded from Protein Data Bank, PDB code 5TZ1). The highest affinities were predicted for sesquiterpenes
caryophyllene oxide, (E)-caryophyllene, germacrene D, α-copaene, β-bourbonene and δ-cadinene (free binding energies from -9.4 to -8.7 kcal/mol; ketoconazole -11.6 kcal/mol). These compounds were present in somewhat lower quantities in the essential oils (≤ 9.9%). For dominant compounds of the tested essential oils, e.g. myristicin, γ-palmitolactone and octyl butanoate a bit lower affinities were predicted (free binding energies from -7.3 to -5.8 kcal/mol). Tested compounds mostly docked near the heme of the enzyme and formed hydrophobic interactions with the amino acid residues of the active site. According to SwissADME tool, four of five most active compounds have low absorption from gastrointestinal tract and higher skin permeation value, while caryophyllene oxide and three dominant compounds have high absorption and lower skin permeation value (similarly to ketoconazole).

CONCLUSIONS:
Investigated parsnips represent sources of essential oils and compounds with anticandidal activity.

Prethodna ispitivanja H.
sibiricum nisu uključivala analizu polifenola, dok su furanokumarini do sada analizirani u
korenu, plodovima i listovima (1, 3).
pritiskom. Hemijski sastav dobijenih suvih ekstrakata analiziran je LC-MS metodama.
Dodatno, u slučaju metanolnih ekstrakata spektrofotometrijski je utvrđen sadržaj ukupnih
polifenola pomoću Folin‐Ciocalteu reagensa. Antioksidantna aktivnost metanolnih ekstrakata
ispitana je spektrofotometrijskim FRAP i DPPH testovima, a dihlormetanskih ekstrakata
DPPH testom.
144,20 mg/g suvog ekstrakta). Najzastupljeniji su bili vincetoksikozid A (kvercetin 7-O-ramnozil
3-O-glukozid; 26,83 i 29,61 mg/g), kemferitrin (kemferol 3,7-di-O-ramnozid; 33,62
i 34,68 mg/g) i jedan kvercetin dezoksiheksozil dezoksiheksozid (69,06 i 79,91 mg/g).
U ekstraktu listova detektovano je još šest, a u ekstraktu cvasti još pet heterozida ovih
flavonola. Takođe, u oba ekstrakta identifikovana je hlorogenska kiselina (19,31 i
4,12 mg/g). Spektrofotometrijski utvrđen sadržaj ukupnih polifenola iznosio je 126,08 i
125,33 mg ekvivalenata galne kiseline/g.
U suvom dihlormetanskom ekstraktu listova LC-MS metodom detektovane su male
količine furanokumarina izopimpinelina i bergaptena (ukupno 0,22 mg/g suvog ekstrakta),
čije je prisustvo i ranije utvrđeno (3). U ekstraktu cvasti, pored dva navedena, identifikovano
biakangelikol (3,29 mg/g).
Ukupna antioksidantna aktivnost suvih metanolnih ekstrakata listova i cvasti (FRAP
AB - Siberian cow parsnip, Heracleum sibiricum L. (Apiaceae), is autochthonous to
northern, eastern and central Europe, Balkan Peninsula and Siberia (1). Infusion prepared
from aerial parts of this plant is used in folk medicine on Balkan Peninsula as aperitif and to
treat diarrhea and other gastrointestinal complaints (2). Previous studies of H. sibiricum
have not included polyphenol analysis, while furanocoumarins were analyzed in roots, fruits
and leaves (1, 3).
In this work, chemical composition and antioxidant activity of methanol and
dichloromethane extracts obtained from leaves and flowers of this plant were investigated.
Dried plant material, collected on Mts Stara Planina (Serbia) in July 2014, was
extracted successively with dichloromethane and methanol (in both cases by bimaceration
72+48 h; drug/solvent=1:10 w/V). Solvents were removed under reduced pressure. The
composition of obtained dry extracts was analyzed by LC-MS methods. Additionally, for
methanol extracts, total phenolics contents were determined spectrophotometrically using
Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Antioxidant activity of methanol extracts was tested by
spectrophotometric FRAP and DPPH assays, and of dichloromethane extracts by DPPH assay.
LC-MS analysis showed that investigated leaf and flower dry methanol extracts were
very similar. In both extracts, significant amounts of quercetin and kaempferol glycosides
(154.30 and 144.20 mg/g of dry extract) were determined. Dominant were vincetoxicoside A
(quercetin 7-O-rhamnosyl 3-O-glucoside; 26.83 and 29.61 mg/g), kaempferitrin (kaempferol
3,7-di-O-rhamnoside; 33.62 and 34.68 mg/g) and one quercetin deoxyhexosyl
deoxyhexoside (69.06 and 79.91 mg/g). Six more glycosides of these flavonols were detected
in the leaf extract and five more in the flower extract. Also, chlorogenic acid (19.31 and 4.12
mg/g) was identified in both extracts. Spectrophotometrically determined total phenolics
contents were 126.08 and 125.33 mg gallic acid equivalents/g.
In the leaf dry dichloromethane extract, by LC-MS method, small amounts of
furanocoumarins isopimpinellin and bergapten were detected (totally 0.22 mg/g of dry
extract). Their presence was also previously shown (3). In the flower extract, besides these
two, six more furanocoumarins were identified; all present in small amounts (totally 20.07
mg/g). The most abundant was bergapten (4.84 mg/g), followed by byakangelicol (3.29
mg/g).
Total antioxidant (FRAP values 1.08 and 0.94 mmol Fe2+/g) and antiradical activities
(DPPH SC50 values 64.10 and 64.77 μg/mL) of the leaf and flower dry methanol extracts were
correlated with their total phenolics contents. Anti-DPPH activities of the dry
dichloromethane extracts were expectedly lower (SC50 values 636.19 and 790.20 μg/mL).
Heracleum sibiricum leaves and flowers represent new sources of compounds with
known antioxidant activity.

metanolnih i dihlormetanskih ekstrakata listova i cvasti ove biljke.
Osušen biljni materijal (sakupljen na Staroj Planini u Srbiji u julu 2014. god.)
ekstrahovan je sukcesivno dihlormetanom i metanolom (u oba slučaja bimaceracijom
72+48 h, sa odnosom droga rastvarač 1:10 m/V). Rastvarači su uklonjeni pod sniženim
pritiskom. Hemijski sastav dobijenih suvih ekstrakata analiziran je LC-MS metodama.
Dodatno, u slučaju metanolnih ekstrakata spektrofotometrijski je utvrđen sadržaj ukupnih
polifenola pomoću Folin‐Ciocalteu reagensa. Antioksidantna aktivnost metanolnih ekstrakata
ispitana je spektrofotometrijskim FRAP i DPPH testovima, a dihlormetanskih ekstrakata
DPPH testom.
144,20 mg/g suvog ekstrakta). Najzastupljeniji su bili vincetoksikozid A (kvercetin 7-O-ramnozil
3-O-glukozid; 26,83 i 29,61 mg/g), kemferitrin (kemferol 3,7-di-O-ramnozid; 33,62
i 34,68 mg/g) i jedan kvercetin dezoksiheksozil dezoksiheksozid (69,06 i 79,91 mg/g).
U ekstraktu listova detektovano je još šest, a u ekstraktu cvasti još pet heterozida ovih
flavonola. Takođe, u oba ekstrakta identifikovana je hlorogenska kiselina (19,31 i
4,12 mg/g). Spektrofotometrijski utvrđen sadržaj ukupnih polifenola iznosio je 126,08 i
125,33 mg ekvivalenata galne kiseline/g.
U suvom dihlormetanskom ekstraktu listova LC-MS metodom detektovane su male
količine furanokumarina izopimpinelina i bergaptena (ukupno 0,22 mg/g suvog ekstrakta),
čije je prisustvo i ranije utvrđeno (3). U ekstraktu cvasti, pored dva navedena, identifikovano
biakangelikol (3,29 mg/g).
Ukupna antioksidantna aktivnost suvih metanolnih ekstrakata listova i cvasti (FRAP
poznatom antioksidantnom aktivnošću., Siberian cow parsnip, Heracleum sibiricum L.

AB - Kritski origano, Origanum dictamnus L. (Lamiaceae), je endemična biljka grčkog ostrva
Krit.
inflamacija kože i modrica. U Evropskoj farmakopeji (Ph.
Eur. Prinos etarskog ulja iznosio je 1,51% V/m, tj. 1,46%
m/m. Hemijski sastav etarskog ulja analiziran je gasnom hromatografijom sa FID i MS
detekcijom (GC-FID i GC-MS). Identifikovane su 42 komponente, koje su činile 94,6% sastava
etarskog ulja. Procentualno najveći udeo u etarskom ulju činili su oksidovani monoterpeni
(58,8%; 9 jedinjenja), a sledili su monoterpenski ugljovodonici (27,4%; 12 jedinjenja),
seskviterpenski ugljovodonici (5,6%; 12 jedinjenja) i oksidovani seskviterpeni (2,3%; 6
jedinjenja).
antiradikalski potencijal ranije pokazan (3).
definisanje parametara farmaceutskog kvaliteta droge Origani dictamni herba i njenog
etarskog ulja.
AB - Cretan dittany, Origanum dictamnus L. (Lamiaceae), is an endemic species from the
Greek island of Crete. The Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products of the European
Medicines Agency (EMA/HMPC) adopted EU monograph on traditional use of Cretan dittany
herb, Origani dictamni herba. According to this monograph, comminuted herb is used orally
as herbal tea (infusion) for the relief of cough associated with cold and for mild
gastrointestinal disorders, as well as cutaneously as infusion or decoction for the treatment
of minor skin inflammations and bruises. European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) monographs
for this herbal drug and its essential oil do not exist for now.
The aim of this work was to investigate chemical composition of the essential oil
obtained from a commercial sample of Cretan dittany herb and to evaluate its antiradical
activity.
The essential oil was isolated from the herb by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger‐type
apparatus, according to procedure given in Ph. Eur. The yield was 1.51% V/w, i.e. 1.46%
w/w. Chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography with
FID and MS detection (GC-FID and GC-MS). A total of 42 components were identified,
comprising 94.6% of the composition of the essential oil. The dominant were oxygenated
monoterpenes (58.8%; 9 compounds), followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons (27.4%; 12
compounds), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (5.6%; 12 compounds) and oxygenated
sesquiterpenes (2.3%; 6 compounds). The main component of the essential oil was
monoterpene phenol carvacrol (51.4%), followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons p-cymene
(14.3%) and γ-terpinene (9.3%). Obtained results were in accordance with the literature
data; it should be noted that in the case of the sample analyzed in this work, the essential oil
yield was higher than previously published values (1, 2).
The antiradical activity of the essential oil was investigated by spectrophotometric
DPPH test. The percentage of antiradical activity increased linearly with the increase of
essential oil concentration. The concentration at which the essential oil inhibited 50% DPPH
radicals (SC50) was 141.77 μg/mL. Significant anti-DPPH potential of the essential oil of
Cretan dittany herb can be at least partly explained by the presence of high quantity of
carvacrol, which antiradical potential was demonstrated previously (3).
The results of performed chemical investigations may be important for defining
pharmaceutical quality parameters of the herbal drug Origani dictamni herba and its
essential oil in the future.

AB - Dry MeOH extracts of the twig barks of Pyrus communis subsp. pyraster, P. spinosa and their hybrid P.×jordanovii nothosubsp. velenovskyi, collected in wild in Serbia, were analyzed. By LC/MS, the contents of arbutin (99.9–131.0 mg/g), chlorogenic acid (2.2–6.3 mg/g), catechin (1.0–5.3 mg/g) and total dimeric and trimeric procyanidins (42.2–61.3 mg/g), including procyanidin B2 (8.9–17.2 mg/g), were determined. Colorimetri- cally, high contents of total phenolics (436.2–533.4 mg GAE/g) and tannins (339.4–425.7 mg GAE/g), as well as strong total antioxidant activities (FRAP values 4.5–5.9 mmol Fe2+ /g), and DPPH (SC50 = 6.6–7.1 μg/ml) and hydroxyl radical (SC50 = 447.1–727.7 μg/ml) scavenging abilities were revealed. In vitro, all extracts exhibited notable inhibition of α-amylase (IC50 = 310.8–617.7 μg/ml) and particularly strong inhibition of α-glucosidase (IC50 = 2.1–3.7 μg/ml). Molecular docking predicted that among identified compounds procyanidin B2 is the best inhibitor of these carbohydrate-digesting enzymes. Obtained results showed that the barks of investigated Pyrus hybrid and its parent taxa have similar composition and bioactivity.

AB - Aromatic plants and essential oils have many applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and the food industry. The essential oil of the flowering aerial parts of Achillea grandifolia, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed for its constituents and investigated for antimicrobial and radical scavenging activity. The essential oil was characterized by a high amount of oxygenated monoterpenes (72.7%) with 1,8-cineole (29.2%) and camphor (23.4%) being the most abundant. Sesquiterpenes were present in smaller quantities (4.8%). Antimicrobial activity was tested against eight ATCC bacterial strains and two ATCC strains of Candida albicans. The essential oil exhibited highly pronounced antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus with a MIC value of 3.50 μg/mL, as well as significant antimicrobial activity (<100 μg/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis. Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant. Achillea grandifolia essential oil exhibited concentration-dependent antiradical activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical with an SC50 value of 5.4 mg/mL. The TLC-DPPH assay revealed two main light yellow spots indicating components with anti-DPPH activity, which after isolation were identified as 1,8-cineole and camphor.
AB - Aromatične biljke i etarska ulja nalaze primenu u medicini, farmaciji, kozmetičkoj, parfimerijskoj i prehrambenoj industriji.

AB - Present study investigated triterpene profile, antihyperalgesic and antiedematous activities of Hieracium scheppigianum flowering aerial parts dichloromethane extract (SCH), and antihyperalgesic and antiedematous activities of previously chemically characterised polyphenol-rich H. glabratum and H. calophyllum flowering aerial parts methanol extracts (GLA and CAL, respectively). α- and β-Amyrin and their acetates, and lupeol acetate were identified and quantified in SCH by GC-FID and GC-MS. In carrageenan-induced localised inflammation model in rats, SCH and GLA (50–200 mg/kg, p.o.) produced significant and dose-dependent antihyperalgesic effect of 26.9%–56.2% (ED50=163.0 ± 26.5 mg/kg) and 25.3%–51.6% (ED50=211.6 ± 70.6 mg/kg), respectively, and CAL (200 mg/kg, p.o.) exhibited effect of 38.1%. Extracts did not significantly reduce paw edema. SCH and GLA, which demonstrated higher (over 50%) antihyperalgesic efficacy, were tested in a rotarod test (200 mg/kg, p.o.) and no alteration of motor coordination was observed. Also, acute administration of SCH and GLA in mice (2000 mg/kg, p.o.) caused neither mortality nor toxicity.

AB - According to current EU monograph of the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products of
European Medicines Agency (EMA/HMPC) for ginkgo leaf, Ginkgonis folium (Ginkgo biloba,
Ginkgoaceae), herbal medicines prepared from refined and quantified dry extract of ginkgo leaf
are used for the improvement of (age-associated) cognitive impairment and of quality of life in
mild dementia. It was demonstrated in clinical trials that long-term use of the extract is effective
mainly in patients more than 50 years old. The precise mode of action is not known. According
to Ph. Eur., the extract should contain 22.0-27.0% of flavonoids, 2.8-3.4% of ginkgolides A, B
and C, and 2.6-3.2% of bilobalide, which are active constituents, and maximum 5 ppm of
ginkgolic acids, which are potential allergens. These herbal medicines are characterized by
corresponding posology, duration of use, contraindications, special warnings, and precautions for
use, interactions and possible undesirable reactions.
demencije. U kliničkim studijama je pokazana efikasnost hronične primene ekstrakta
prevashodno kod pacijenata starosti preko 50 godina. Precizan mehanizam delovanja nije poznat.
primene, kontraindikacije, posebna upozorenja i mere opreza, interakcije i moguće neželjene
reakcije.

AB - The composition of leaf and flower essential oils of eight Heracleum taxa (populations collected in Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Slovenia) was statistically analyzed to evaluate its chemosystematic significance. Investigated taxa included H. orphanidis and the representatives of H. sphondylium group: H. sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. orsinii and H. verticillatum. Hydrodistilled essential oils were analyzed by GC–FID and GC–MS. Chemosystematic significance was evaluated using multivariate statistics: principal component analysis (PCA), non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and unweighted pair-group arithmetic averages clustering (UPGMA). Statistical analyses included our previously published data on the composition of essential oils of eight leaf and three flower samples, as well as the data on the composition of the oils of additional eight leaf and five flower samples obtained in the current work. Leaf and flower essential oils of H. sphondylium group members were dominated by various sesquiterpenes, phenylpropanoids and/or monoterpenes. Heracleum orphanidis leaf and flower essential oils were rich in aliphatic esters, mostly octyl acetate. Statistical analysis of the composition of leaf essential oils, as well as of flower oils, demonstrated the grouping of investigated populations of these Heracleum taxa according to their systematics, i.e., separation of H. orphanidis from the representatives of H. sphondylium group, and grouping of H. pyrenaicum subspecies within this group. Morphologically related H. sibiricum and H. ternatum were closely located in PCA and NMDS and in UPGMA even shared the same cluster.

H. sphondylium (H. sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. orsinii i H. verticillatum), i H. orphanidis, svi iz (tipske) sect. Wendia.
Hemosistematski značaj komponenti etarskih ulja (u slučaju podzemnih organa i plodova i komponenti njihovih headspace frakcija) i furanokumarina utvrđen je multivarijantnom statističkom analizom (PCA, nMDS i UPGMA).

H. sphondylium (H. sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. orsinii i H. verticillatum), i H. orphanidis, svi iz (tipske) sect. Wendia.
AB - For essential oils of roots, leaves, flowers and fruits of eight Heracleum taxa (H.sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. orsinii, H. verticillatum and H. orphanidis), we previously demonstrated antimicrobial, cytotoxic (selective to cancer cells) and/or antioxidant activities. In this work, for these essential oils maximum daily intake related to total furanocoumarins (FCs) content was estimated, according to Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products of European Medicines Agency (EMA/HMPC) recommendations. FCs were quantified using gas chromatography, and their sum equivalent to xanthotoxin (8-methoxypsoralen, 8-MOP) was calculated. It was shown that daily intake, not contributing significantly to overall risk (equivalent to intake of 1.5 mg FCs) for root essential oils was in the range of 1.94-5.23 mL, for fruit oils of 5.23-15.68 mL and for leaf or flower oils of 2.90-15.68 mL. Daily intake, not posing any unacceptable risk (equivalent to intake of 15 μg FCs) for root oils was in the range of 0.02-0.05 mL, for fruit oils of 0.05-0.16 mL and for leaf or flower oils of 0.03-0.16 mL. This work demonstrates the application of current EMA/HMPC recommendations, in order to establish safety profile of herbal preparations containing FCs.
AB - Za etarska ulja korena, listova, cvasti i plodova osam taksona roda Heracleum
(H. sphondylium, H. sibiricum, H. montanum, H. ternatum, H. pyrenaicum subsp. pollinianum,
demonstrira primenu aktuelnih EMA/HMPC preporuka u cilju utvrđivanja bezbednosnog
profila biljnih preparata u kojima su detektovani furanokumarini.

AB - Fatty acids (FAs), sterols, and triterpenes of dichloromethane extracts of the fruits of 8 Heracleum L. taxa (Apiaceae) from southeastern Europe were investigated by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. In order to analyze the FAs, their volatile methyl esters were obtained by saponification and subsequent esterification of oily supernatants of the fruit extracts. Dominant was petroselinic acid (42.8%-56.5%), followed by linoleic (20.3%-33.3%) and oleic acids (12.3%-13.7%). Sterols and triterpenes were analyzed as volatile derivatives obtained by the silanization of residual unsaponifiable fractions. Among them, the most abundant was β-sitosterol (44.9%-56.9%), followed by stigmasterol (15.7%-25.0%), Δ7-stigmastenol (6.6%-12.5%), and campesterol (5.2%-8.1%). The quantity of petroselinic acid was also determined by the external standard method (298.8-433.4 mg/g of oily supernatant). The obtained results show that the investigated plants are potential valuable sources of the compounds utilized in different industries.
