AB - The study was designed to investigate the influence of zinc (Zn) supplementation on cadmium-induced alterations in zinc, copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) status in rabbits. For this purpose, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), Zn, Cu, and Mg were estimated in the blood, liver, kidney, and bone. The rabbits were divided in a control group, a Cd group-animals intoxicated orally with Cd (10mg kg(-1) bw, as aqueous solution of Cd-chloride), and a Cd+ Zn group-animals intoxicated with the same dose of Cd and co-treated with Zn (20 mg kg(-1) bw, as aqueous solution of Zn-sulphate). Solutions were administered orally, every day for 28 days. Sample mineralisation was performed with concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) and perchloric acid (HClO4) (4: 1) and metal concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Zinc supplementation improved some of Cd-induced disturbances in bioelement levels in the investigated tissues. Beneficial effects of Zn on Zn and Cu levels were observed in blood, as well as on the Cu kidney level. The calculated values for Cu/Zn,Mg/Zn, and Mg/Cu ratios in blood suggest that Zn co-treatment reduces Cd-induced changes in bioelement ratios in blood.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the plasma selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) levels and to evaluate their possible association with metabolic syndrome (MetS) components in patients with schizophrenia. The study group consisted of 60 patients with schizophrenia and 60 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, and biochemical analysis of fasting blood were performed in all subjects. Patients with schizophrenia had significantly higher plasma Cu concentrations compared with controls (0.97 +/- 0.31 vs. 0.77 +/- 0.32 mg/L, p = 0.001). The plasma Cu concentration showed a positive correlation with plasma glucose and diastolic blood pressure in the patient groups (r (s) = 0.263, p lt 0.05 and r (s) = 0.272, p lt 0.05, respectively). The plasma Se level correlated positive with MetS score (r (s) = 0.385, p lt 0.01), waist circumference (r (s) = 0.344, p lt 0.05), plasma glucose (r (s) = 0.319, p lt 0.05), and triglyceride concentrations (r (s) = 0.462, p lt 0.001) in patients with schizophrenia. Plasma Zn did not correlate with any of the MetS components. These results suggest that alterations in plasma Cu and Se levels in medicated patients with schizophrenia could be associated with metabolic risk factors.

AB - The present study was undertaken to determine the physicochemical parameters of honey samples produced in Branicevo and Podunavlje Districts of Republic Serbia. During period 2010- 2012 the total 226 samples were analysed in Institute for Public Health Požarevac for parameters including moisture, acidity, diastase activity, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), invert sugar, sucrose, ash and water-insoluble solids. 4 of 107 (3.7%) floral honey samples were of unacceptable quality based on recommended criteria of diastase activity (2 of 107, 1.9%), HMF (3 of 107, 2.8%) and acidity (1 of 107, 0.9%) by Serbian Regulation on honey quality. Also 1 of 105 (0.01%) acacia honey samples wasn't in accordance with Serbian Legislation because of increased content of HMF and decreased diastase activity. All 8 analysed linden honey and 6 honeydew were found to meet the Serbian Regulations. Total 97.8% of analyzed honey samples are in line with the European and Serbian standards which indicated good quality of honey produced in Branicevo and Podunavlje Districts.

AB - The use of selenium as animal feed supplement in Serbia was approved in 1989 for some categories of pigs, sheep and poultry. From 2000 selenium in animal feed became a requirement for all categories of farm animals. The aim of this study was to determine the consumption of selenium by Serbian livestock and in poultry production between 1990-1991 and 2000-2008 and to analyze the selenium content of meat, milk and eggs sold on Serbian markets to gain insight into human selenium intake. Data indicate a low level of selenium inclusion in animal feed during 1990-1991 compared to during 2000-2008. These results coincide with Serbian regulations. From 2001 an organic form of selenium (selenized yeast) was introduced in small quantities (less than 8% of the total consumed selenium). Analysis of meat, milk and eggs from Serbian markets shows increased selenium levels compared to 1991. However, the estimated total human daily intake in Serbia is 40.9 μg, which is under the recommended quantity. Increasing the quantity of selenium included in animal feed and the substitution of inorganic selenium with selenized yeast could be beneficial for animal health and farm productivity. As a consequence a further improvement in the human selenium status in Serbia should be possible.

AB - Cadmium (Cd) is today one of the most significant metal poisons, both in the area of professional as well as of eco toxicology. In the organism, cadmium has a harmful effect on the kidneys, liver, bones, testicles, etc., and, based on evidence in humans that it causes lung carcinoma, it has been placed in the first group of carcinogens. In spite of numerous data in literature on the harmful effects of cadmium, the interactions between cadmium and bioelements as a significant mechanism for cadmium toxicity have still not been sufficiently explained. Since the data so far point to a positive effect of supplementation with certain bioelements regarding toxicity and cadmium content in the organism, the objective of this work was to investigate the effect of increased simultaneous intake of magnesium, zinc and copper on urinary elimination of cadmium in rabbits exposed to cadmium. Rabbits were divided into two groups: Cd group - for a period of 28 days the animals received per os 10 mg Cd/kg b.m/day and Cd+(Mg+Zn+Cu) group - 10 mg Cd/kg b.m. + 40 mg Mg/kg b.m, 20 mg Zn/kg b.m. and 10 mg Cu/kg b.m/day. Daily urine was collected on days 0, 10, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, and 28 of the experiment. Following decomposition of urine samples with the help of concentrated HNO3 and HClO4 (4:1), the metal concentration was determined using the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Supplementation with magnesium, zinc and copper did not result in significant changes in the elimination of cadmium through urine in animals poisoned with cadmium, in comparison with the animals that were administered only cadmium, while the concentration of all three applied bioelements in urine was significantly increased. It can be concluded that the simultaneous administration of increased doses of zinc, copper and magnesium does not have a positive effect on the elimination of cadmium in conditions when rabbits are poisoned with cadmium.
I pored brojnih literaturnih podataka o štetnim efektima Cd, interakcije kadmijuma i bioelemenata kao značajnog mehanizma toksičnosti kadmijuma, još uvek nisu dovoljno razjašnjene. + 40 mg Mg/kg t.m, 20 mg Zn/kg t.m. i 10 mg Cu/kg t.m/dan.

abstract = "Cadmium (Cd) is today one of the most significant metal poisons, both in the area of professional as well as of eco toxicology. AB - Investigation of the content of elements in food samples requires the destruction of the organic substance by dry, or one of several wet digestion procedures: ashing in open or closed vessels and use of heater or microwave oven. The efficiency of three methods of meat digestion was evaluated for the analytical determination of Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg, Na and K. These methods were: nitric acid wetashing in sealed teflon vessels; nitric acid/perchloric acid wet digestion; and dry ashing The final solutions were subsequently analyzed for Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca and Mg by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and for Na and K by atomic emission spectroscopy (AES). Cu, Zn and Mg could be reliably determined by any of the tested methods, while for the other elements, mineralisation in sealed teflon vessels showed higher content in the meat than the dry ashing (p lt 0.05). The with-ashing in sealed teflon vessels was also the most precise method and with the highest recoveries' values.
AB - Određivanju sadržaja makro i mikroelemenata u namirnicama atomskom spektrofotometrijom prethodi mineralizacija uzorka. U mineralizovanim uzorcima određen je sadržaj Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca i Mg atomskom apsorpcionom spektrofotometrijom, i sadržaj Na i K atomskom emisionom spektrofotometrijom.

AB - A 16-week-long experiment was performed to compare the effect of sodium selenite (SS) and selenium-enriched yeast (SY) supplementation on eggshell quality and also to evaluate breaking force correlation with other parameters of shell quality originating from hens fed with selenium supplementation. One hundred Shaver 579 hens (27 weeks old) with similar body size were randomly divided for five dietary treatments: basal diet without selenium supplementation and basal diets with two levels of selenium supplementation (0.4 or 0.8 mg/kg) via SS or SY. No adverse effect of Se inclusion in hen's feed, regardless of its source, on shell breaking force, shell deformation, shape index, shell thickness and shell percentage, were observed throughout the current study (P > 0.05). Moderate correlations were found between breaking force and nondestructive shell deformation for all diets (P lt 0.05). There was no significant overall correlation between egg breaking force and shell thickness or/and percentage shell in the presence of selenium supplemention (P > 0.05). Shape index in all four selenium-supplemented groups was not related to the breaking force (P > 0.05). Selenium supplementation of up to 0.8 mg/kg, regardless of its source, in the diet of laying hens in their first phase of laying does not adversely affect eggshell quality.

One hundred Shaver 579 hens, 27 weeks old, were placed on one of five experimental treatments. Each treatment was replicated four times with five hens per cage. Treatments consisted of feeding a low Se diet without supplementation (basal diet) or basal diet with one of two levels of supplemented Se (0.4 or 0.8 mg/kg) supplied by SS or SY. All supplemented treatments had significantly higher whole-egg Se concentration from basal diet (P lt 0.05). On the same supplemented level, hens fed on SY had higher egg Se content from hens feed on SS (P lt 0.001). No effects of dietary treatments on egg weight, percentages of dirty and cracked egg, and feed intake and conversion of feed were observed throughout the trial (P lt 0.05). In the first 8 weeks, there was no significant difference (P lt 0.05) in hen-day egg production among treatments. From the ninth week on to the end of the trial, supplementation of SY to hen's diet resulted in a higher egg production than SS (P lt 0.01).
