AB - In this study chamomile was extracted applying two different techniques in order to obtain the extract opulent with bioactive compounds. For this purpose one conventional (Soxhlet - SE) and one non-conventional (Supercritical fluid extraction - SFE) extraction technique were used. Detailed chemical composition of SE and SFE extracts was analysed by GC - MS. Additionally, biological activity of the chamomile products was examined as well. The yield of lipophilic fraction, achieved by 3h extraction, with CO2 at 350 bar and 40 °C was close to that one produced by Soxhlet performed for 6 h with methylene chloride. On the other hand, examination of their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) showed much higher enzyme-inhibitory potential of SFE extracts. Due to their green character and safety, SFE extracts have a great potential and possibilities for their use as ingredients in both numerous functional food products and pharmaceutical products, are recognized.

AB - BACKGROUND: To obtain bioactive fractions from plant material subcritical water is notably advantageous in comparison to any other technique. Excellent solvating properties and selectivity combined with finely tuned reactivity of subcritical water enable exploitation of the potential of plants. Herein subcritical water extraction was used for recovery of bioactive compounds from leaves, roots and fruits of Sambucus ebulus L. Extracts obtained were characterized in terms of biological and chemical fingerprints. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONR: esults obtained by using several antioxidant assays that focused on different mechanisms showed that subcritical water extracts of Sambucus ebulus were powerful antioxidants. Enzyme inhibitory effects were tested against alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase and tyrosinase, and the results showed the anti-diabetic potential of the extracts as well as its possible use with skin disorders. Antiproliferative properties were detected on three cell lines (A-549; LS-174 T; HeLa) and showed prominent cytotoxicity against all tumor cell lines. Inhibitory concentrations obtained were in the range 0.58-8.10 mu g mL(-1). Generally, the SCW extracts from leaves exhibited stronger biological activities with higher levels of phenolic compounds compared with the roots and fruits of Sambucus ebulus. Gallic acid, catechin and caffeic acid were identified as major components in these extracts and these components seem to relate with observed biological activity. CONCLUSION: The results obtained suggest that Sambucus ebulus has great potential for preparing new phyto-pharmaceuticals and functional food ingredients. (C) 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

AB - Preparation of functional products as well as natural-based products requires non-toxic but effective extraction techniques. In this study, subcritical water extraction was used for the extraction of different aronia parts in order to explore their potential. Stems, leaves and berries of Aronia melanocarpa were extracted under the following conditions: temperature 130 degrees C; pressure 35 bar; time 20 min. The total phenols and flavonoid contents of the produced extracts were evaluated by conventional spectrophotometric methods. Additionally, the main phenolic compounds were also identified and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The biological potential of the extracts was evaluated by determining their antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS and lipid peroxidation assays), antimicrobial, enzyme inhibitory (cholinesterase and elastase) and cytotoxic effects (HeLa, A-549, LS-174T, MRC-5 cell lines). The results indicate that leaves and berries extracts exhibited stronger antioxidant action when compared with stems. The strongest cholinesterase and elastase inhibitory activity was also found in berries extract. Similarly, the extracts obtained from leaves and berries showed considerable cytotoxic effects against tested cell lines. A moderate antimicrobial effects was observed too. Demonstrated biological potential of all three aronia parts can trace a new road map for developing newly designed functional products.
