Determination of physicochemical quality parameters of fruit wines produced in Republic of Serbia

AB  - Fruit wines are products obtained after the processing of fruit crops which are not grapes.
Water and alcohol are the most abundant constituents of fruit wines, along with biologically active
compounds which are present in small amounts. Taken together, they significantly affect the
physicochemical quality parameters. Before market placement, it is important to determine the
physicochemical quality parameters of fruit wines.
This study deals with the determination of physicochemical quality parameters in
blackberry and sour cherry fruit wines produced in Serbia. The total content of acids determined
by titration was in the interval from 7.37 to 9.05 g/L express to mallic acid. The pH values were
from 2.75 to 3.57. The content of free SO2 is important to prevent spoilage induced by
microorganisms, and it was in the range from 12.52 to 15.21 mg/L. The ethanol content of samples
was in the interval from 6.87 to 13.57 % v/v. The obtained values for ethanol content were in
accordance with the initial content of sugar in vinification, which was in the range from 13.8 to
24.2 ° Brix. Total phenolic content of fruit wines was from 1895.77 to 2417.21 mg/L expressed
as gallic acid equivalents.
All the investigated physicochemical parameters of the analyzed fruit wines, except ethanol
content, were in line with the National Regulations for Quality and Other Demands for Grape
Wine (National Regulations). The obtained results indicate the quality of fruit and demonstrate
that all the procedures applied during wine production were conducted properly to obtain a quality
final product. Ethanol content was below the minimal limit in 5 of 11 analyzed samples according
to the National Regulations. This can be explained by the fact that every fruit has a different
composition of natural constituents, which is a crucial reason to adopt specific regulations related
to quality and other requirements for fruit wines.
AB  - Voćna vina su proizvodi koji se dobijaju preradom voća koje nije grožđe. Voda i alkohol su najzastupljeniji u sastavu, dok su u malim količinama prisutna i biološki aktivna jedinjenja. Svi oni zajedno utiču na fizičko-hemijske parametre kvaliteta. Da bi voćna vina mogla da se nađu na tržištu, bitno je da se ispitaju fizičko-hemijski parametri kvaliteta. U ovom radu ispitani su fizičko-hemijski parametri kvaliteta voćnih vina od kupine i višnje koja su proizvedena u Srbiji. Sadržaj ukupnih kiselina određen titracijom je bio od 7.37 do 9.05 g/L jabučne kiseline. Vrednosti za pH vina su bile u intervalu od 2.75 do 3.57. Količina slobodnog SO2, koji je važan da zaštiti vino od mikrobiološkog kvarenja, bila je 12.52 do 15.21 mg/L. Količina alkohola u vinima bila je u intervalu od 6.87 do 13.57 % v/v. Upravo ove vrednosti su bile u skladu sa inicijalnim sadržajem šećera u vinifikacijama, koji je bio od 13.8 do 24.2 ° Brix. Sadržaj ukupnih polifenola u vinima je bio 1895.77 do 2417.21 mg/L ekvivalenata galne kiseline. Svi rezultati analize kvaliteta voćnih vina, osim sadržaja alkohola, bili su u skladu sa Pravilnikom o kvalitetu i drugim zahtevima za vino od grožđa (Pravilnik), što ukazuje na kvalitet voća i na to da je postupak proizvodnje sproveden tako da se dobije dobar krajnji proizvod. Sadržaj alkohola u 5 od 11 uzoraka analiziranih vina je bio ispod najniže vrednosti propisane Pravilnikom, što se može objasniti različitom prirodom samog voća u odnosu na grožđe. Upravo to je glavni razlog da se usvoje posebni zakonski propisi koji će se odnositi na kvalitet i druge zahteve za voćna vina.

Phthalate content in toy samples available on the market of the Republic of Serbia

AB  - Phthalates are a family of synthetic chemicals commonly used as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride-based polymers. They are used in a variety of commercial consumer products, including children's toys. Exposure to phthalates is associated with various adverse health effects, such as developmental and reproductive disorders, liver and kidney toxicity, etc. In the European Union, but also in the Republic of Serbia, restrictions have been imposed on the presence of seven phthalates in toys. In addition, the European Union has established the Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) to protect consumers across borders by preventing or restricting the sale and use of non-food articles, including children's toys, that pose a significant health and safety risk. In this work, 118 samples of children's toys from the market of the Republic of Serbia were analysed for the presence of all seven restricted phthalates using the HPLC-DAD method. We also comprehensively analysed the RAPEX notifications of toys posing a chemical risk due to the presence of phthalates from 2012 to 2022. In total, 23.7% of the tested toy samples contained one or more phthalates above 0.1% w/w, which corresponds to the legal limit. DEHP was found above the limit in all non-compliant toy samples, followed by DBP, DINP, BBP and DIDP. DIBP and DNOP were not found in any of the samples. In general, phthalates were present in the tested samples in concentrations ranging from <LOQ to 36.6% (w/w), depending on the type of phthalate detected, with DINP detected in the highest concentration. In the period 2012–2022, 1192 alerts related to non-compliant toys were registered due to the illegal presence of phthalates. Among them, DEHP was present in 94.79% of toy samples, while it was the only phthalate in 58.4% of toy samples. Furthermore, DEHP was present in the highest concentration of about 18.5% (w/w), with a maximum detected concentration of up to 55% (w/w). The results presented in this article show that even more than a decade after the introduction of the ban and restrictions on phthalates in toys, toys are still a significant source of children's exposure to phthalates.

Effects of probiotic intervention on obesity- related miRNAs

AB  - Obesity is considered to be a chronic complex disease that increases the risk of diabetes,
heart diseases and certain cancers. According to the literature, in obese people the gastrointestinal
microbiota is disturbed, which could be the cause of the onset of obesity and related diseases.
Moreover, there are small non-coding RNAs (microRNAs) that are disturbed in obesity, which
are also considered to be a possible mechanism of probiotics’ action. Certain microRNAs are
involved in the development and metabolism of adipose tissue cells, as well as the secretion and
action of insulin, showing that changed expression of certain miRNAs could have a significant
impact on the onset and development of obesity and obesity-related diseases. Thus, miRNAs are
considered to be possible markers for the diagnosis and prognosis of various metabolic diseases,
and possible therapeutic targets for the treatment of obesity and related diseases. Considering the
growing need of the healthcare system for nutraceuticals and dietary supplements that present
effective and safe medical nutritive therapy in obese individuals, this work aimed to assess the
beneficial effects of probiotics on obesity-related microRNAs. In this review, we described the
role of microRNAs and probiotics in obesity and the association between probiotics and obesity-
related microRNAs. Circulating miRNAs’ profile in obese individuals significantly differs from
that of normal-weight individuals. miRNAs such as miR-155, miR-221, miR-24-3p, and miR-
181a are over-expressed, while miR-26b and 125a are under-expressed in obese patients
compared to non-obese individuals. It has been found that supplementation with Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus could downregulate the expression of miR-155 and miR-
221, and upregulate the expression of miR-26b. Supplementation with a probiotic formulation
containing S. boulardii, L. plantarum 299v, and octacosanol led to the downregulation of miR-
155 and miR-24-3p expression. miR-125a and miR-181a were upregulated and downregulated,
respectively, after the intervention with L. delbrueckii and L. rhamnosus. After reviewing the
available literature, we can conclude that probiotics have beneficial effects on microRNAs altered
in obesity, which could provide an effective strategy for the management of obesity.
AB  - Gojaznost se smatra hroničnom, kompleksnom bolešću koja povećava rizik od nastanka drugih oboljenja poput dijabetesa, kardiovaskularnih oboljenja i određenih karcinoma. Prema literaturnim podacima, kod gojaznih osoba dolazi do narušavanja gastrointestinalne mikrobiote, što nadalje može biti uzrok razvoja gojaznosti i bolesti povezanih sa gojaznošću. Dodatno, postoje male nekodirajuće RNK (mikroRNK) čije su koncentracije promenjene kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Takođe, mikroRNK se smatraju mogućim mehanizmom delovanja probiotika. Određene mikroRNK se smatraju ključnim u procesima razvoja i metabolizma masnog tkiva, kao i u procesima sinteze i delovanja hormona insulina, time ukazujući na to da bi promene u ekspresiji određenih miRNK mogle imati značajan uticaj na nastanak i razvoj gojaznosti i bolesti povezanih sa gojaznošću. Zbog navedenog, miRNK se smatraju mogućim markerima za dijagnozu i praćenje metaboličkih bolesti, ali se razmatraju i kao moguća terapija u tretmanu gojaznosti i oboljenja povezanih sa gojaznošću. U svetlu rastućih potreba sistema zdravstvene zaštite u pogledu dodataka ishrani i nutraceutika koji pružaju efikasnu i bezbednu podršku medicinskoj nutritivnoj terapiji kod gojaznosti, cilj ovog rada bio je da se istraže korisni efekti probiotika na mikroRNK povezane sa gojaznošću. U ovom narativnom pregledu opisali smo ulogu probiotika i mikroRNK u gojaznosti, kao i moguću povezanost probiotika sa mikroRNK koje su izmenjene kod gojaznih ljudi. Profil cirkulišućih miRNK se značajno razlikuje kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Ekspresija miRNK poput miR-155, miR-221, miR-24-3p i miR-181a je značajno povišena, dok je ekspresija miR-26b i miR-125a snižena kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Suplementacija sa Bifidobacterium bifidum i Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotskim sojevima snižava ekspresiju miR-155 i miR-221, dok je ekspresija miR-26b povišena nakon suplementacije ovim sojevima. Probiotska formulacija koja sadrži kombinaciju S. boulardii, L. plantarum 299v i oktakozanola dovela je do smanjenja ekspresije miR-155 i miR-24-3p. Ekspresija miR-125a je bila povećana, dok je ekspresija miR-181a bila snižena nakon suplementacije sojevima L. delbrueckii and L. rhamnosus. Nakon pregleda dostupne literature, možemo zaključiti da probiotici imaju pozitivno dejstvo na mikroRNK izmenjene kod gojaznih osoba, te da bi primena probiotika mogla biti efikasna strategija u tretmanu gojaznosti.

compared to non-obese individuals. It has been found that supplementation with Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus could downregulate the expression of miR-155 and miR-
221, and upregulate the expression of miR-26b. Supplementation with a probiotic formulation
containing S. boulardii, L. plantarum 299v, and octacosanol led to the downregulation of miR-
155 and miR-24-3p expression. miR-125a and miR-181a were upregulated and downregulated,
respectively, after the intervention with L. delbrueckii and L. rhamnosus. After reviewing the
available literature, we can conclude that probiotics have beneficial effects on microRNAs altered
in obesity, which could provide an effective strategy for the management of obesity., Gojaznost se smatra hroničnom, kompleksnom bolešću koja povećava rizik od nastanka drugih oboljenja poput dijabetesa, kardiovaskularnih oboljenja i određenih karcinoma. Prema literaturnim podacima, kod gojaznih osoba dolazi do narušavanja gastrointestinalne mikrobiote, što nadalje može biti uzrok razvoja gojaznosti i bolesti povezanih sa gojaznošću. Dodatno, postoje male nekodirajuće RNK (mikroRNK) čije su koncentracije promenjene kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Takođe, mikroRNK se smatraju mogućim mehanizmom delovanja probiotika. Određene mikroRNK se smatraju ključnim u procesima razvoja i metabolizma masnog tkiva, kao i u procesima sinteze i delovanja hormona insulina, time ukazujući na to da bi promene u ekspresiji određenih miRNK mogle imati značajan uticaj na nastanak i razvoj gojaznosti i bolesti povezanih sa gojaznošću. Zbog navedenog, miRNK se smatraju mogućim markerima za dijagnozu i praćenje metaboličkih bolesti, ali se razmatraju i kao moguća terapija u tretmanu gojaznosti i oboljenja povezanih sa gojaznošću. U svetlu rastućih potreba sistema zdravstvene zaštite u pogledu dodataka ishrani i nutraceutika koji pružaju efikasnu i bezbednu podršku medicinskoj nutritivnoj terapiji kod gojaznosti, cilj ovog rada bio je da se istraže korisni efekti probiotika na mikroRNK povezane sa gojaznošću. U ovom narativnom pregledu opisali smo ulogu probiotika i mikroRNK u gojaznosti, kao i moguću povezanost probiotika sa mikroRNK koje su izmenjene kod gojaznih ljudi. Profil cirkulišućih miRNK se značajno razlikuje kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Ekspresija miRNK poput miR-155, miR-221, miR-24-3p i miR-181a je značajno povišena, dok je ekspresija miR-26b i miR-125a snižena kod gojaznih osoba u poređenju sa osobama normalne telesne mase. Suplementacija sa Bifidobacterium bifidum i Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotskim sojevima snižava ekspresiju miR-155 i miR-221, dok je ekspresija miR-26b povišena nakon suplementacije ovim sojevima. Probiotska formulacija koja sadrži kombinaciju S. boulardii, L. plantarum 299v i oktakozanola dovela je do smanjenja ekspresije miR-155 i miR-24-3p. Ekspresija miR-125a je bila povećana, dok je ekspresija miR-181a bila snižena nakon suplementacije sojevima L. delbrueckii and L. rhamnosus. Nakon pregleda dostupne literature, možemo zaključiti da probiotici imaju pozitivno dejstvo na mikroRNK izmenjene kod gojaznih osoba, te da bi primena probiotika mogla biti efikasna strategija u tretmanu gojaznosti.",

AB  - Obesity is often accompanied by low-grade chronic inflammation and metabolic syndrome. It has been established that microbiota influences many physiological processes, including the development of obesity, and dysbiosis has been observed in obese individuals. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of a new probiotic formulation, containing two probiotic strains and the bioactive compound octacosanol, on body weight, metabolic parameters, and concentrations of certain adipocytokines and appetite-regulating hormones in obese women. This double blind placebo-controlled supplementary intervention study included twenty-five women in the intervention group and twenty-three in the placebo group, and it lasted 12 weeks. Daily oral supplementation included 7 × 1010 CFU of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843), 5 × 109 CFU of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii (DBVPG6763), and 40 mg of octacosanol or placebo. Body weight, metabolic parameters, adipocytokines, and appetite-regulating hormones were assessed before (T0) and after the intervention (T1). After the intervention, significantly lower median concentrations of CRP (p = 0.005) and IL-6 (p = 0.012) were measured in the intervention group than the baseline, while the median concentrations of ghrelin (p = 0.026) and HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.03) were significantly increased. The intervention group had lower CRP levels (p = 0.023) and higher ghrelin levels (p = 0.006) than the placebo group. Significant changes in BMI between groups were not observed. In summary, although the new probiotic formulation showed beneficial effects on IL-6, CRP, HDL, and ghrelin levels, its potential effects on regulating triglyceride, insulin, and glucose levels require further studies before the novel dietary intervention could be considered a useful adjuvant therapy and an effective strategy for the management of obesity and obesity-associated comorbidities. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

AB  - Objectives: Evidence suggests that both N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and NAC in combination with propolis (NAC-P) reduce symptoms of acute bronchitis and improve Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). This study aimed to compare the impact of NAC and NAC-P therapy on acute bronchitis patients' quality of life. Design, setting, and subjects: A randomized, single-blind parallel-group study was achieved at Municipal Institute for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis Medical Centre, Belgrade, Serbia. Patients with acute bronchitis were randomly assigned into two groups to receive NAC (200mg three times a day) or NAC-P (200mg+80mg three times a day) orally for a minimum of ten days. HRQoL of patients was measured twice (at two appointments) using the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) and EQ-5D questionnaires. Results: The study included 42 patients in the NAC-P group and 43 in the NAC group. The correlation between the LCQ total score and Health State Values (HSV) was positive and statistically significant in the NAC-P and the NAC groups at the second appointment. The differences between values of EQ-5D scores were slightly higher (but not statistically significant) in the NAC-P group compared to the NAC group, indicating a more remarkable improvement of HRQoL using NAC-P. Conclusion: NAC-P and NAC may improve HRQoL in patients with acute bronchitis. EQ-5D scale values indicated that NAC-P might improve quality of life more than NAC. Our results may provide the basis for better decision-making by healthcare professionals when choosing the right therapy.

AB  - Dietary supplements (DS) are manufactured products consisting of one or more dietary
ingredients; they are intended to supplement the diet and provide additional nutrients or other
beneficial compounds that are lacking or insufficient in a regular diet. Dietary supplements
containing antioxidant compounds have been shown to have positive effects in various
(pato)physiological processes, i.e., any condition that is fundamentally redox imbalanced
(cardiovascular diseases, cancer, aging, intense exercise). The most common antioxidants in
dietary supplements are clearly antioxidant micronutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and
selenium, but also various secondary plant compounds, including polyphenols and carotenoids.
The dosage of antioxidants administered through dietary supplements may not always be optimal,
so some dietary interventions through supplementation with antioxidant compounds have been
shown to have an effect that it is limited, or completely absent. Therefore, any dietary
supplementation should be done only under appropriate guidance from health care professionals
to ensure that it is safe, effective, and appropriate for the individual's condition and needs.
AB  - Dijetetski suplementi (DS) ili dodaci ishrani su proizvodi koji sadrže jedan ili više sastojaka
i primenjuju se kao dopuna ishrani, odnosno imaju posebnu nutritivnu namenu. Brojni su naučni
dokazi koji sugerišu da DS koji sadrže antioksidativna jedinjenja imaju blagotvorno dejstvo u
različitim (pato)fiziološkim procesima, odnosno bilo kom stanju koje u osnovi ima narušenu
redoks ravnotežu (kardiovaskularne bolesti, rak, starenje, intenzivno vežbanje). Najčešći
antioksidansi u dodacima ishrani su antioksidativni mikronutrijenti kao što su vitamin C, vitamin
E, selen, i cink, ali i različiti sekundarni biljni metaboliti, uključujući polifenole i karotenoide.
Posebna pažnja mora biti usmerena na doze i dužinu suplementacije. Neadekvatna primena
antioksidanasa putem dijetetskih suplemenata često ishoduje time da dijetarne intervencije
suplementacijom antioksidativnim jedinjenjima imaju ograničen efekat ili on kompletno izostane.
Stoga ove ali i sve druge dijetarne suplementacije treba sprovoditi isključivo u skladu sa
uputstvima zdravstvenih radnika kako bi se osigurali njihova efikasnost i bezbednost, ali i
prikladnost za stanje i potrebe pojedinca.

Epigenetic Aspects of a New Probiotic Concept—A Pilot Study

AB  - Several studies report the important role of an altered gut microbiota in the development of obesity, highlighting the potential use of probiotics in the treatment of obesity. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a novel probiotic approach on the expression of specific miRNAs and mRNAs associated with obesity in combination with the hypocholesterolemic octacosanol. Twenty overweight/obese women participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study and were randomly divided into two groups: the intervention group (daily one capsule containing Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843), Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii, and 40 mg octacosanol; N = 12) and the placebo group (N = 8). Changes in lipid parameters and expression of miRNAs and mRNAs were assessed before (T0) and after the 12-week intervention (T1). After the intervention, the expression of miR-155-5p (9.38 ± 0.85 vs. 8.38 ± 1.06, p = 0.05) and miR-24-3p (3.42 ± 0.38 vs. 2.71 ± 0.97, p = 0.031) showed significant decreases in the intervention group when compared to the control group. At T1, the expression of miR-155-5p (8.69 ± 1.31 vs. 9.3 ± 0.85, p = 0.04), miR-125b-5p (5.41 ± 1.18 vs. 5.99 ± 1.36, p = 0.049), and TNF-α (10.24 ± 1.66 vs. 11.36 ± 1.12, p = 0.009) were significantly decreased in the intervention group. No changes in lipids and anthropometric parameters were observed. The novel probiotic approach had a positive effect on regulating the expression of certain miRNAs and mRNAs important for regulating inflammation and adipogenesis, which are essential for obesity onset and control.

Erythrocyte fatty acid aberrations in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – correlation with disease duration

AB  - Background: Recent literature data highlights metabolic changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). To explore possible early metabolic changes, we aimed to analyse the fatty acids (FA) composition of erythrocytes in newly diagnosed ALS patients and to see whether fatty acid levels correlate with the ALSFRS-R score or disease duration. Methods: The severity of motor function involvement was assessed by the ALSFRS-R scale at the initial evaluation. The fatty acid profile of erythrocyte membranes was analysed by gas-liquid chromatography. The study comprised 26 clinically diagnosed ALS patients, with mean ALSFRS-R 38±8. The control group included 26 healthy volunteers. Results: Significantly higher levels of palmitic acid and total saturated FAs were detected in ALS patients. In ALS patients, total monounsaturated FA, palmitoleic, vaccenic, and oleic acid were also significantly increased. The levels of eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, total polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and n-6 PUFA were significantly lower in ALS patients. Additionally, a-linolenic acid, the precursor of the n-3 PUFA family, was not detected in ALS patients. We found no significant correlation between the ALSFRS-R score and the abundance of individual FAs analysed. A moderate negative correlation was found between disease duration and DHA level, and a positive correlation was detected with MUFA. Conclusion: Experimental evidence presented may contribute to shaping a beneficial nutritional intervention.
AB  - Uvod: Dostupni literaturni podaci ističu značaj metaboličkih promena kod amiotrofične lateralne skleroze (ALS). Sa ciljem da istražimo moguće rane metaboličke promene analizirali smo sastav masnih kiselina (MK) eritrocita kod novodijagnostikovanih ALS pacijenata da bi videli da li nivoi masnih kiselina koreliraju sa ALSFRS-R ocenom ili trajanjem bolesti. Metode: Stepen oštećenja motoričke funkcije procenjivan je ALSFRS-R skalom pri početnoj proceni. Studija je obuhvatila 26 klinički dijagnostikovanih ALS pacijenata, srednja vrednost ALSFRS-R bila je 38±8. Kontrolnu grupu činilo je 26 zdravih dobrovoljaca. Profil masnih kiselina membrana eritrocita je analiziran gasno-tečnom hromatografijom. Rezultati: Značajno viši nivoi palmitinske kiseline i ukupnih zasićenih MK nađeni su kod ALS pacijenata. Ukupne mono nezasićene MK, palmitoleinska, vakcenska i oleinska kiselina takođe su bile značajno povećane kod ALS pacijenata. Nivoi eikozapentaenske kiseline, dokozapentaenske kiseline, ukupne polinezasićene MK (PUFA) i n-6 PUFA bili su značajno niži kod pacijenata sa ALS. Pored toga, a- linolenska kiselina, prekursor porodice n-3 PUFA, uopšte nije detektovana kod ALS pacijenata. Nismo prona{li zna- ~ajnu korelaciju izme|u ALSFRS-R ocene i nivoa pojedinačnih analiziranih MK. How Supplementation with SOD-Rich Plant Extract, Combined with Gliadin, Can Affect Oxidative Stress Markers and Zonulin Levels in Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress

AB  - A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to investigate the influence of supplementation with a superoxide dismutase (SOD)-rich plant extract on markers of oxidative stress, zonulin levels and the performance of elite athletes. Participants were 30 international-level rowers, divided into an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). The rowers performed a maximal effort incremental test on a rowing ergometer at the beginning and at the end of the study. Markers of oxidative stress (total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), malondialdehyde (MDA), sulfhydryl (SH) groups, bilirubin, uric acid, albumin and zonulin) were determined in serum. A lower TOS (p = 0.010) and OSI (p = 0.004), a lower MDA (p = 0.001) and a higher level of SH groups (p = 0.031) were observed in the experimental group after supplementation. Physical performance was evaluated through metabolic efficiency, taking lactate levels and power output on the ergometer into account. After 6 weeks of supplementation, the relative increase in metabolic efficiency at a 4 mmol/L lactate concentration and maximal effort was significantly higher in the experimental group (p = 0.004 and p = 0.015, respectively). These results suggest that supplementation with a SOD-rich extract promotes lower oxidative stress, better antioxidant protection and, consequently, the better work performance of athletes.

Association of octacosanol supplementation with redox status in patients on chronic statin therapy

AB  - Background: The uneven lipid-lowering statin effects and
statin intolerance raise interest regarding the involvement
of coadministration of statins and dietary supplements.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of octacosanol
supplementation on markers of redox status in cardiovascular patients on chronic atorvastatin therapy.
Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled,
single-centre study was conducted. Redox status home-
ostasis parameters  i.e., advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), total
oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), total protein sulfhydryl (SH-
groups), and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity  were
assessed in 81 patients. According to favorable changes in
lipid profile, patients were classified into two groups:
responders (n = 35) and non-responders (n = 46), and
followed for 13 weeks. A principal component analysis
(PCA) was applied to explore the effect of octacosanol supplementation and the relationship between investigated
parameters as predictors of responders’ and non-responders’ status.
Results: Significant decrease in Oxy-score value was found
at the endpoint compared to baseline in responders’ group (21.0 (13.4–25.5) versus 15.1 (12.4–18.0); P < 0.01).
PCA analysis extracted 4 significant factors in the both
groups, whereas extracted factors containing »octacosanol
status« variable explained 14.7% and 11.5% of the variance
in responders’ and non-responders’ subgroups, respectively.
Conclusions: Octacosanol supplementation leads to an
improvement of lipid profile and markers of redox status in
responders’ group. New studies are needed to validate our
results in order to find the best approach for personalized
supplementation as a useful adjunct to standard statin
therapy.
AB  - Uvod: Neujednačeni hipolipemijski efekti primene statina kao i intolerancija na statine dovode do porasta inte resovanja u vezi sa zajedničkom primenom statina i dijetetskih suplemenata. Ova studija je imala za cilj da proceni efekte suplementacije oktakozanolom na markere redoks statusa kod kardiovaskularnih pacijenata na hroničnoj terapiji atorvastatinom. Metode: Sprovedena je dvostruko slepa, randomizovana, placebo kontrolisana studija. U serumu 81 pacijenta određivani su parametri redoks statusa [produkti uznapredovale oksidacije proteina (AOPP), prooksidativno-antioksidativni balans (PAB), totalni oksidativni status (TOS), totalni antioksidativni status (TAS), aktivnost superoksid dismutaze (SOD), sulfihidrilne grupe (SH-grupe) i aktivnost paraoksonaze 1 (PON1)]. U odnosu na povoljne promene lipidnog profila, pacijenti su klasifikovani u dve grupe: responderi (n = 35) i neresponderi (n = 46), i praćeni su 13 nedelja. Rezultati: Značajno smanjenje vrednosti oksi-skora primećeno je kod respondera na kraju studije u poređenju sa vrednostima na početku studije (21,0 (1 3,4 -25,5) vs. 15,1 (12,4 -18,0); P < 0,01). Principal component analiza (PCA) je primenjena da bi se procenio efekat suplementacije oktakozanolom kao i odnos između ispitivanih parametara kao prediktora odgovara u obe grupe. PCA analiza je izdvojila po 4 značajna faktora u obe grupe, pri čemu faktori koji sadrže varijablu "status oktakozanola" objašnjavaju 14,7% i 11,5% ukupne varijacije kod respondera i nerespondera, redom. Zaključak: Suplementacija oktakozanolom dovodi do poboljšanja lipidnog profila i markera redoks statusa u grupi respondera. Buduće studije su potrebne za potvrdu dobijenih rezultata a u cilju pronalaženja optimalnog pristupa za personalizovanu suplementaciju uz standardnu terapiju statinima.

statin intolerance raise interest regarding the involvement
of coadministration of statins and dietary supplements.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of octacosanol
supplementation on markers of redox status in cardiovascular patients on chronic atorvastatin therapy.
Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled,
single-centre study was conducted. Redox status home-
ostasis parameters  i.e., advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), total
oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), total protein sulfhydryl (SH-
groups), and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity  were
assessed in 81 patients. According to favorable changes in
lipid profile, patients were classified into two groups:
responders (n = 35) and non-responders (n = 46), and
followed for 13 weeks. A principal component analysis
(PCA) was applied to explore the effect of octacosanol supplementation and the relationship between investigated
parameters as predictors of responders’ and non-responders’ status.
Results: Significant decrease in Oxy-score value was found
at the endpoint compared to baseline in responders’ group (21.0 (13.4–25.5) versus 15.1 (12.4–18.0); P < 0.01).
PCA analysis extracted 4 significant factors in the both
groups, whereas extracted factors containing »octacosanol
status« variable explained 14.7% and 11.5% of the variance
in responders’ and non-responders’ subgroups, respectively.
Conclusions: Octacosanol supplementation leads to an

A combination of N-acetyl cysteine and propolis attenuates oxidative-inflammatory parameters during COPD exacerbation

AB  - OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine any differences in ox- idative stress and inflammation parameters in COPD patients treated with either N-acetyl cys- teine (NAC) alone or with NAC in combination with propolis (NACP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty COPD pa- tients in the exacerbation phase were enrolled into the study and were treated with either NAC (NAC group; n=20) or NACP (NACP group; n=20) twice daily for one month. Redox status was de - termined by measuring superoxide anion (O 2 .– ), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total oxidative status (TOS), prooxidative-anti- oxidant balance (PAB), malondialdehyde (MDA), ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and sever- al other antioxidant markers: superoxide dis- mutase (SOD), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), total sulf- hydryl groups (SHG) and total antioxidant status (TAS). Interleukins 6, 8 and 17 were measured as markers of inflammatory status. RESULTS: Both groups had similar socio-de - mographic and clinical characteristics. Af- ter treatment significantly higher SHG [0.446 (0.395-0.516) vs. 0.292 (0.270-0.325), p<0.001] and significantly lower TOS – 50.6 [49.7-53.4 vs. 73.2 (50.9-84.6), p<0.05] – and IMA [0.650 (0.629-0.682) vs. 0.709 (0.667-0.756), p<0.05] – were found in the NACP group compared to the NAC group. Factorial analysis indicated a larger oxidative stress-inflammatory load in the NAC group after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: From an oxidative stress and inflammatory status perspective, treatment with NACP was more successful than with NAC. The inclusion of propolis into therapy for COPD patients, especially those in the exacerbation phase, could prove beneficial.

Also, changes in gut microbiota composition were observed in obese patients, and probiotics
supplementation has been shown to improve some of the obesity-associated metabolic
parameters. This study aimed to determine the possible effects of probiotic supplementation
on platelet morphology in overweight/obese premenopausal women.Twenty overweight
(BMI = 25.0-29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2) women participated in double-
blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. They were randomly assigned to receive one
capsule daily of probiotics (7x1010 CFU Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843), 5x109
CFU Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii and 40mg octacosanol; N=10) or placebo
(N=10) for 3 months. To determine changes in the parameters of platelet activation - the
platelet count (PC), platelet distribution width (PDW), Feret diameter, and hypogranular
appearance, blood samples were obtained for an automated hematology analyser and
peripheral smears staining. Although difference in PC was not found between groups,
supplementation with probiotics decreased PDW compared to the placebo group (p<0.05).
Regarding platelets diameter, there is an decrease in group supplemented with probiotics
compared to placebo, however, a statistical difference has not been reached. Further, the
proportion of hypogranular PL was increased in a probiotic-supplemented group compared
to the placebo group (p<0.01). In conclusion, probiotic supplementation achieved
improvements in platelets morphology and hematological indices in overweight/obese
premenopausal women.
AB  - Gojaznost je često povezana sa povećanom funkcijom krvnih pločica i trombozom.
Takođe, istraživanja ukazuju na promenjen sastav mikrobioma creva kod gojaznih osoba,
kao i da suplementacija određenim probioticima može imati pozitivan uticaj na telesnu
masu. Cilj rada je bio da se ispita uticaj suplementacije probiotskog preparata na morfološke
karakteristike krvnih pločica u randomizovanoj, dvostruko-slepoj, placebo-kontrolisanoj
studiji. U tu svrhu, regrutovano je 20 žena sa prekomernom težinom (BMI ≥ 25,0 kg/m2) koje
su podeljene u dve grupe. Prva grupa je pila dnevno jednu kapsulu probiotskog preparata
tokom tri meseca (kombinaciju soja Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM9843),
Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii i 40 mg oktakozanola; N = 10), dok je druga grupa
bila placebo grupa. Određen je broj krvnih pločica, i njihova raspodela po volumenu (eng.
platelet distribution width, PDW), a zatim je posmatrana morfologija krvnih pločica i
izmeren njihov dijametar iz krvnih razmaza. Analiza je pokazala da su krvne pločice kod
gojaznih/žena sa prekomernom težinom uglavnom krupne, što je jedan od pokazatelja
njihove aktivnosti. U interventoj grupi nije zapažena promena u broju krvnih pločica, ali je
značajno smanjen PDW u poređenju sa placebo grupom (p < 0,05). Dalje, pokazano je da je
udeo hipogranularnih krvnih pločica bio povećan u poređenju sa placebo grupom (p < 0,01).
Ovi rezultati ukazuju na pozitivan efekat probiotika na morfološke karakteristike krvnih
pločica i mogućnost primene probiotika u regulaciji njihove aktivnosti u patološkim
stanjima.

As salivary IgA represents the first line of defence against microorganisms contacting mucosal surfaces, we explored the binding and specificity of salivary IgA by testing the binding of purified, FITC-labelled salivary IgA to different microorganisms in flow cytometry and conclude that this kind of analysis enables the differentiation of species/strains with high IgA binding capacity, which should be corroborated on a larger sample size. Further we compare, with in-house ELISA, the binding of polyclonal salivary IgA with the binding of polyclonal serum IgA from the same individuals to whole microbial cells and to purified microbial components. High correlations were obtained in total salivary IgA binding to Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Escherichia coli, very distant bacterial species, as well as to isolated bacterial components (r =.70–.97). The binding of total salivary IgA resembled the binding of both salivary IgA1 and IgA2, with IgA2 predominating. For serum polyclonal IgA repertoire, substantially higher specificity was obtained. Serum IgA binding to E. coli correlated best with serum IgA binding to lipopolysaccharide (r =.86), and serum IgA against L. rhamnosus correlated best with the anti-peptidoglycan IgA levels (r =.88). We have also detected that total serum IgA response is governed by either IgA1 or IgA2 response, depending on the nature of the antigen/s. We conclude that steady state salivary IgA repertoire, unlike serum IgA repertoire, consists of polyreactive antibodies with innate specificity, questioning its capacity to select resident microbiota.

AB  - This study aimed to investigate the effect of supplementation with plant origin superoxide dismutase (SOD), GliSODin, on parameters of muscle damage, metabolic, and work performance at international level rowers. Twenty-eight rowers were included in a randomized, double-blind study. The study was conducted during a 6-week preparation period. At the beginning of the study and after 6 weeks of the supplementation period, all rowers were tested on a rowing ergometer. Blood samples were taken from the antecubital vein before and after every ergometer testing. Muscle damage markers creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), inflammation parameters interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Rowing performance was assessed by lactate level in capillary blood and power output on the rowing ergometer. After supplementation, experimental group had significantly lower CK (p = 0.049) and IL-6 (p = 0.035) before and IL-6 (p = 0.050) after exhausting exercise on ergometer. Relative change of power output at 4 mmol/L concentration of lactate in blood, considering the initial and final test, was significantly higher (p = 0.020) in the supplemented group. It was concluded that GliSODin could be considered a good supplement in preventing some deleterious effects of intensive physical activity, including inflammation and muscle damage, and consequently, to enable a better rowing performance of elite rowers.

Similarities and differences in the nutritional composition of nuts and seeds in Serbia

AB  - Nuts and seeds are an indispensable part of the plant-based diet, which is becoming increasingly popular due to the evidence of their health benefits and contribution to sustainability and planetary health. Since the health effects of consuming nuts and seeds directly depend on their nutritional composition and consumed amount, it is essential to know the exact chemical composition of each nut and seed so that appropriate dietary interventions can be adequately planned. The present study aimed to examine the chemical composition of nuts and seeds obtained from the Serbian market and to highlight the similarities and differences in their nutritional composition. In twenty-four samples of nuts and seeds, the content of total lipids, including fatty acid profile, total proteins, including amino acid profile, total carbohydrates (sugars and fibers), phytosterols, and minerals were determined. Content of selected nutrients in grams (g) or milligrams (mg) of nuts and seeds was expressed in one portion (28 g) and as a percentage of contribution of Reference Intakes (% RI) and Dietary Reference Value (% DRV) for macronutrients and minerals, respectively. Some of the seed representatives appeared to be rich sources of essential omega-3 fatty acid, α-linolenic acid (ALA) (flax seed vs. walnut, 6.50 vs. 0.56 g per portion, respectively), dietary fibers (chia seed vs. raw almond, 10.6 vs. 3.4 g per portion, respectively), calcium (black sesame seed vs. almond roasted, 32.4% NRV vs. 8.1% NRV per portion, respectively), magnesium (hemp seed vs. Brazil nut, 38.3% NRV vs. 27.8% NRV per portion, respectively), and zinc (hemp seed vs. pine nut, 21.4% NRV vs. 17.6% NRV per portion, respectively). Our results highlighted the crucial role of seeds in the diet, especially as a better source of nutrients compared to nuts. Furthermore, it was seen that nuts and seeds are different and complementary in their composition. Thus, in order to meet the needs for certain nutrients for which nuts and seeds are used as dietary sources (essential fatty acids, minerals, dietary fibers), it would be beneficial to combine both nuts and seeds as a part of a healthy dietary pattern.

AB  - This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of three magnesium (Mg) dietary supplements containing mineral immediately available for absorption on Mg biochemical status indices (ionized and total Mg), as well as their effects on electrolytes levels in healthy female young adults (n = 61). After a 10-days intervention period supplementation with powder/granulate containing Mg oxide led to an increase in both ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg in comparison with the baseline. Supplementation with Mg citrate was associated with the significant increase in % of ionized fraction and decrease in serum total Mg concentration. By contrast, among participants consuming Mg carbonate in the form of effervescent tablets ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg decreased, without detectable changes in serum total Mg. In conclusion, after the short-term supplementation period, Mg oxide demonstrated superior bioavailability compared to the other examined Mg supplements without affecting other minerals’ levels.

AB  - Many types of vegetable oils produce around the world. They are useful in nutrition,
prevention and treatment of diseases. Some oils traditionally have been well known for a long
time and have been shown many potential health benefits, such as, cardioprotective effect,
effect on digestion, risk of some cancer and it is also used in the treatment of skin infections.
This work was conducted to study some quality criteria of oil extracted from seven different
raw seeds purchased in the Serbian market, namely: sunflowers, sesame seeds, black sesame
seeds, tickles seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds and hemp seeds. Oils are essentially regarded in
terms of quality based on their free fatty acid, iodine value and peroxides value. Oils were
extracted from the seeds by cold extraction with petroleum ether. Quality characteristics,
such as refractive index, acid value, peroxide value, iodine value and saponification value and
unsaponifiable matter were determined. For the determination of these parameters, official
methods (ISO 6320; ISO660; ISO 3960; ISO 3961; ISO 3657 and ISO 18609, respectively) were
used. The contents of investigated parameters in seed samples were determined in the range
of 1.467 to 1.485 nD for refractive index; 1.62 to 4.95 mg KOH/g for acid value; 5.21 to 7.45
for peroxide value; 118 to 197 for iodine value; 180 to 193 for saponification value and 3.14
to 7.26 g/kg for the unsaponifiable matter.
Data obtained in this investigation indicate that all quality parameters of the seed samples,
except peroxide value , comply with the national and Codex standards.

AB  - Background: Literature data indicate the benefit of magne-
sium (Mg) supplementation. The aim of this study was to
examine the effect of short-term Mg supplementation on
iron status in healthy female participants.
Methods: One hundred healthy female students of the
University of Belgrade - Faculty of Pharmacy participated the
study during eleven intervention days. Students ingested Mg
preparations with the same dose of the active substance. The
analysis included the measurement of serum iron, unsaturat-
ed iron binding capacity (UIBC), total iron binding capacity
(TIBC), total Mg (tMg), ionized Mg (iMg), complete blood
count, met-, carboxy- and oxy-haemoglobin (metHgb,
COHgb, O2Hgb). Transferrin concentrations and percentage
of transferrin saturation (SAT) were calculated manually. The
association among the analyzed biochemical parameters was
examined using polynomial regression. A principal compo-
nent analysis (PCA) was used for the evaluation of interde-
pendence between the analyzed parameters.
Results: A statistically significant trend for change in O2Hgb
(%) by tertiles of iMg concentrations was found (P = 0.029).
Serum tMg reached significant positive correlation with the
SAT at concentration levels greater than 0.9 mmol/L, after
11 days of intervention (R2=0.116). Ionized Mg in a con-
centration higher than 0.6 mmol/L is positively correlated
with SAT and serum Fe (R2=0.214; 0.199, respectively).
PCA revealed variability of 64.7% for two axes after 11 days.
Conclusions: Mg supplementation leads to an improvement
in the certain iron status parameters even in individuals with
optimal levels of these indices. However, caution should be
exercised when supplementing Mg, and laboratory monitor-
ing of the interaction is required.
AB  - Uvod: Literaturni podaci ukazuju na benefit suplementacije magnezijumom (Mg). Cilj ove studije bio je da se ispita uticaj kratkotrajne suplementacije Mg na status gvožđa kod zdravih žena. Metode: Sto zdravih studentkinja Univerzitet u Beogradu - Farmaceutskog fakulteta je učestvovalo u istraživanju tokom jedanaest dana intervencije. Studenti su uzimali preparate Mg sa istom dozom aktivne supstance. U serumu je određivano gvožđe, nezasićen kapacitet vezivanja gvožđa (UIBC), ukupan kapacitet vezivanja gvožđa (TIBC), ukupan Mg (tMg), jonizovni Mg (iMg), kompletna krvna slika, met-, karboksiioksihemoglobin (metHgb, COHgb, O2Hgb). Transferin i saturacija transferina (SAT) su izračunati ručno. Povezanost analiziranih biohemijskih parametara je ispitana pomoću polinomalne regresije. Za procenu međuzavisnosti između analiziranih parametara korišćena je analiza glavnih komponenti (PCA). Rezultati: Utvrđen je statistički značajan trend promene O2Hgb (%) po tertilima koncentracija iMg (P = 0,029). Ukupan Mg je dostigao značajnu pozitivnu korelaciju sa SAT pri koncentracijama većim od 0,9 mmol/L, nakon 11 dana intervencije (R2 = 0,116). Jonizovani Mg u koncentraciji većoj od 0,6 mmol/L pozitivno korelira sa SAT i gvožđem (R2 = 0,214; 0,199, redom). PCA analizom je pokazana varijabilnost od 64,7% za dve ose nakon 11 dana. Zaključak: Suplementacija Mg dovodi do poboljšanja određenih parametara statusa gvožđa čak i kod pojedinaca sa optimalnim nivoima ovih parametara. Međutim treba biti oprezan pri suplementaciji Mg, a dodatno je neophodno i laboratorijsko praćenje ovih interakcija.

Influence of various dietary regimes upon immunity

AB  - Although it is considered that optimal nutrition could provide all essential nutrients
and active compounds, various dietary regimes are often not following the relevant
recommendations. On the contrary, nutritional status is closely related to the immune
system. Namely, insufficient caloric intake or a lack of a nutrient can primarily weaken the
immune response. The gastrointestinal tract plays an essential role in the function of the
immune system, which is both the place of absorption of nutrients and the body's immune
defence. Globally, the most prominent cause of immunodeficiencies is undernutrition and
starvation, up to 50 % of undeveloped countries' populations. Undernutrition negatively
affects both innate and adaptive immunity; considering these facts, it is clear that a
prolonged low caloric intake could affect immunity adversely. Since the sixties, World Health
Organisation has considered relations between nutrition and immunity, and nutritional
immunology is a newer scientific discipline. Later, the precise relationship between low
protein intake and lymphoid tissue involution was defined. Generally, the deficiencies of
energy, proteins, iron, iodine, vitamin A, zinc and calcium are the most common. It is
estimated that every third person is being affected globally. Prolonged hypercaloric intake
and resulting obesity could also exhibit immunocompromising effects through inflammation
and hyperactivation of the immune system. The negative impact on the immune system
could also be provoked by intense physical activity, infective agents, and emotional stress.
AB  - Iako se stručna javnost slaže da se odgovarajući unos nutrijenata može obezbediti
dobro izbalansiranom ishranom, u opštoj populaciji su zastupljeni različiti režimi ishrane
koji u potpunosti ne slede preporuke relevantnih tela. Sa druge strane, nutritivni status je u
bliskoj vezi sa imunskim sistemom. Naime, nedovoljan kalorijski unos ili nedostatak nekog
nutrijenta prvenstveno može dovesti do slabljenja imunskog odgovora. Važnu ulogu u
funkciji imunskog sistema ima i gastrointestinalni trakt koji predstavlja mesto apsopcije
nutrijenata, ali i imunološke odbrane organizma. Najčešć i uzrok imunodeficijencije u svetu je
pothranjenost. i to kod čak 50% stanovništva u zemljama trećeg sveta. Pothranjenost dovodi
do poremećaja i urođenog i stečenog imunskog odgovora. Imajući u vidu ove činjenice, jasno
se nameće zaključak da dugotrajni režimi smanjenog kalorijskog unosa mogu ispoljiti sličan
efekat. Nutritivna imunologija je relativno mlada naučna disciplina koja se bavi ovom
problematikom, a šezdesetih godina izlazi monografija Svetske zdravstvene organizacije na
ovu temu. Sedamdesetih je uspostavljena jasna veza izmedju proteinske malnutricije i
involucije limfoidnog tkiva, pa i timusa. Globalno, među najzastupljenijijim deficitima su
deficit energetskog unosa, proteina, gvožđa, joda, vitamina A, D, cinka i kalcijuma, a procena
je da je svaka treća osoba u svetu pogođena nekim od nutritivnih deficita. Dugotrajan
prekomeran kalorijski unos kao i posledična gojaznost, takođe mogu ispoljiti
imunokompromitujući efekat i to kroz inflamaciju, kao i hiperaktivaciju imunskog odgovora.
Negativan efekat na imunski sistem mogu imati i veoma intenzivan fizički napor, kao i
psihički stress, i različiti infektivni agensi.

AB  - Numerous epidemiological studies have confirmed that lifestyle and diet can be very effective in preventing and treating many non-communicable diseases. Replacement of unhealthy food intake between the main meals, i.e. snacks, with foods rich in nutrients such as nuts make a significant contribution to the prevention and treatment of some types of cancer, diabetes mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular diseases. Among the essential bioactive components contained in nuts are healthy minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, ferrum. The objective of this study was to identify the mineral composition of several varieties of nuts, which are part of everyday diet. The concentrations of 7 elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and P) were determined in nut samples (peanut, almond, hazelnut, walnut, Brazil nut, cashew, pecan, pistachio and pine nuts). The mineral contents were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry using a Agilend 5110 dual view, ICP-OES, after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The contents of investigated elements in nut samples were determined as mg/kg in the range from 21.4 to 63.0 for Zn; 25.9 to 107.0 for Fe; 84.2 to 1995 for Ca; 981 to 3724 for Mg; 2295 to 4414 for K and 2814 to 7244 for P. The minimum contents of Na were below the detection limit of the method used. The obtained experimental data are another confirmation that nuts, and above all almond and Brazil nut, are important sources of bioactive components i.e. healthy minerals. Knowing the effect on human health, it is necessary the nuts to be recommended and included in the usual daily diet.

abstract = "Numerous epidemiological studies have confirmed that lifestyle and diet can be very effective in preventing and treating many non-communicable diseases. Replacement of unhealthy food intake between the main meals, i.e. snacks, with foods rich in nutrients such as nuts make a significant contribution to the prevention and treatment of some types of cancer, diabetes mellitus type 2 and cardiovascular diseases. Among the essential bioactive components contained in nuts are healthy minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, ferrum. The objective of this study was to identify the mineral composition of several varieties of nuts, which are part of everyday diet. The concentrations of 7 elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, and P) were determined in nut samples (peanut, almond, hazelnut, walnut, Brazil nut, cashew, pecan, pistachio and pine nuts). The mineral contents were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry using a Agilend 5110 dual view, ICP-OES, after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The contents of investigated elements in nut samples were determined as mg/kg in the range from 21.4 to 63.0 for Zn; 25.9 to 107.0 for Fe; 84.2 to 1995 for Ca; 981 to 3724 for Mg; 2295 to 4414 for K and 2814 to 7244 for P. The minimum contents of Na were below the detection limit of the method used. The obtained experimental data are another confirmation that nuts, and above all almond and Brazil nut, are important sources of bioactive components i.e. healthy minerals. Knowing the effect on human health, it is necessary the nuts to be recommended and included in the usual daily diet.",

AB  - In recent years, we are witnessed that a nuts very popular food and is recommended as part of a diet because it contains numerous bioactive compounds. Nuts contain a high quantity of protein, i.e. amino acids that are known to be necessary for important processes such as tissue growth, energy production, immune function and nutrient absorption. In order to check the amount of individual amino acids found in the favorite samples of nuts of our citizens, we determined total protein and amino acid profile (17 amino acids) in nine samples of nuts (peanut, almond, hazelnut, walnut, Brazil nut, cashew, pecan, pistachio, and pine nuts). Total amino acids composition was determined by ion chromatograph with electrochemical detector, manufactured by Thermo, model ICS-5000, with silver reference electrode (Ag / AgCl) and gold (Au) working electrode and chromatographic column AminoPac PA10 and pre-column AminoPac PA10 guard. Analyzed nuts samples contained 11.7-29.2 g/100 g total proteins. Pecan contained the least protein, while peanut was the richest in total protein. Among the amino acids, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and arginine contents were generally high, whereas methionine, cysteine, histidine and tyrosine contents were low. Peanut was the most important source for essential amino acids (lysine 1.08 g/100 g; histidine 0.71 g/100 g; threonine 0.87 g/100 g; leucine 1.97 g/100 g; isoleucine 1.25 g/100 g; valine 1.07 g/100 g; phenylalanine 1,38 g/100 g; and methionine 0.4 g/100 g). Cashew was the biggest source of essential amino acids, 37% (essential/total amino acids), while the smallest source was almond, 27%. Almond was the biggest source of non-essential amino acids, 73%. The obtained results indicate that the nuts are incomplete in the content of amino acids. Knowledge of the amino acid composition of nuts is essential for combination with other food groups when formulating a balanced diet.

AB  - The impact of diet and fibre fractions on adipocytokines in obese subjects with a risk of diabetes has not been investigated in detail yet. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of a 12-month lifestyle intervention with different fibre profiles (resistant starch (RS)—rich fibre, or ordinary food fibre profiles) on adipocytokine levels. Fifty participants are divided into two groups (RS group and Fibre group). The groups differ only in the percentage of the recommended level of the RS consumed as a fraction of the same total fibre amount. The applied dietary intervention includes intake of 7531 KJ/daywith a total fibre portion of 25–35 g/dayfor both groups that includes 15 g/day of RS for the RS group only. The levels of leptin, adiponectin, apelin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and C-reactive protein (CRP) are measured, and their relationship to anthropometric and biochemical parameters is estimated. Along with significant body weight loss, only leptin is significantly reduced by 13% in the RS group while in the Fibre group, apelin levels are significant (−21%). Polynomial regression shows a negative correlation between RS intake and adiponectin (R2 = 0.145) and resistin level (R2 = 0.461) in the RS group. This study indicates the possibility that fibre fractions differently influence the outcome of lifestyle interventions, as well as their adipocytokine levels, in obese prediabetic adults.

Eighty-seven patients were randomized to receive DS(n= 42) or placebo (n= 45), and followed for 13 weeks. Serum PCSK9 levels, lipid parameters andtheir relationship were the main efficacy endpoints. The absolute levels of PCSK9 and LDL-C werenot significantly different from baseline to 13 weeks. However, physiologic correlation between %change of PCSK9 and % change of LDL-C levels was normalized only in the group of patients treatedwith DS (r= 0.409,p= 0.012).  This study shows that DS can restore statin disrupted physiologicpositive correlation between PCSK9 and LDL-C. Elevated PCSK9 level is an independent risk factorso controlling its rise by statins may be important in prevention of cardiovascular events.
