AB - Hybrid micellar liquid chromatography (HMLC) emerged as a result of application of mobilephases consisting of surfactant solutions in mixture of water and organic solvent, withconcentration higher than surfactant critical micelle concentration (CMC). In HMLC system, surfactant is adsorbed onto the stationary phase, while in mobile phase it exists in form ofmonomers and micelles, so in this chromatographic system, analyte is distributed betweenwater, micellar pseudophase and surfactant-modified stationary phase, which makes retentionbehavior prediction very complex. Use of cationic surfactants micellar solutions as mobilephases is interesting to study because, unlike anionic surfactants, monomers of cationicsurfactant adsorb onto stationary phase in two ways: with hydrophilic part of moleculeoriented towards mobile phase, as well as with hydrophobic part of molecule oriented towardsmobile phase, which makes HMLC system even more complex. Also, CTAB has been rarelyemployed in HMLC systems, and thus micellization process in mobile phases and effect toretention has not been investigated sufficiently.Considering that micelles are key factor to retention mechanisms in HMLC system, thepurpose of this doctoral dissertation was to investigate physicochemical aspects ofmicellization of chosen surfactant CTAB in water and in binary mixtures acetonitrile-water,by determinating micellization parameters (CMC, micelle ionization degree (α), Kraffttemperature (TK), thermodynamic parameters (changes of the standard Gibbs free energy(), enthalpy () and entropy of micellization (), entropic contribution to the Gibbsfree energy (), free energy of transfer () and compensation temperature (TC)),micelle aggregation number (Nagg), structural micelle parameters (surface area per head group(a0) and packing parameter (P)). Knowing CMC is of key importance for application ofmicellar solutions as mobile phases, and so far there have been numerous mathematicalmethods for CMC determination presented in scientific research. In order to make the bestchoice of mathematical method for precise CMC determination, comparatory analysis wasconducted for CMC values obtained by applying different mathematical methods toconductometry experimental data for CTAB in water and CTAB in binary mixtureacetonitrile-water...

AB - The effect of acetonitrile (ACN) on the micellization of a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammo-nium bromide (CTAB), in aqueous solutions at different temperatures was studied. The critical micellar concentration (CMC) as well as the degree of counter ion dissociation () of CTAB in aqueous ACN mixtures (1020 % v/v) at various temperatures (291.2298.2 K) were determined by electrical conduc-tivity measurements, while steady-state fluorescence measurements were used to determine several CMCs (for comparison) and a micellar aggregation number (Nagg) as well. At a fixed temperature, both an increase in CMC and a decrease in Nagg were observed for an increase in ACN in the solvent mixture. With a temperature increase, CMC values increased for 10 % (v/v) ACN, while for both 15 % and 20 % (v/v) ACN, CMC values were a minimum at T = 295.2 K with a temperature increase. In addition, some aspects related to the Krafft temperature behavior of CTAB in the examined micellar systems are dis-cussed.

AB - Retention behavior of ionized and unionized forms of ten weak acid solutes was investigated in hybrid micellar systems with varying cetyltrimethylammonium bromide concentrations (CTAB), acetonitrile (ACN) content and mobile phase pH range from 2.5 to 7.5. It was shown that observed retention patterns are significantly affected by CTAB concentration, ACN volume fraction and analytes' ionization state. The rationale and quantitative description for observed retention behavior was obtained by fitting k values to retention model and calculation of binding constants for both ionized and unionized species. The importance of interaction between analyte anions and positively charged CTAB molecules adsorbed onto stationary phase surface was confirmed. For all solutes, except salicylic acid and furosemide, binding to stationary phase is reduced upon ACN volume fraction increase since the solvent partially desorbs the adsorbed surfactant. Also, the interactions of analytes with micelles are diminished with increase in ACN content because it promotes decrease in micelle aggregation number and its capacity for analyte binding. The additional analysis to identify and interpret molecular descriptors which can best explain the experimental evidence and findings obtained was performed. These findings could provide a new and specific understanding of the interactions between all the components of the hybrid micellar chromatographic system and a good basis for further investigations suggesting the development of generally applicable predictors in structure-retention relationship studies in related chromatographic systems.

AB - ABSTRACT Aggregation of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide
(CTAB) in water (W) and acetonitrile-water (ACN-W) mixtures of different
composition (10-20% (v/v) of ACN) was studied through fluorescence
measurements. The CTAB critical micellar concentration (CMC) and the
micelle aggregation number (Nagg) were determined at T = 22.0 °C. It was
found that for increasing volume ratios of ACN to W, the CMC value attains
a minimum (1.22 mM) at 15% (v/v) ACN while Nagg is continuously
decreasing as ACN content in the ACN-W mixture increases. The effect of
this dipolar aprotic solvent on the CTAB micelle formation can be interpreted
in terms of its considerably hydrogen bonding ability and influence on balk phase properties (solvophobic effect).

AB - An undergraduate electrical conductivity measurement experiment in a physical chemistry lab and basic fitting procedures are presented that allow a characterization of micellar system of hexadecyttrirnethylammonium bromide (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) in binary mixture of water and acetonitrile (ACN) as a cosolvent (10%, v/v) at 30.0 degrees C. Conductivity-concentration data were processed by inbuilt function of ORIGIN software to attain the values of critical micelle concentration by method of integration. Acquiring the data-fitting skills that are developed through the addition of a computational tool to a conventional electrical conductometry experiment has a general significance for its applications to more complex upper-level experiments with the aim to process data and perform fast calculations and graphics.
