Synthesis and characterization of 12-phosphotungstic acid supported on BEA zeolite

AB  - An optimized synthetic route for obtaining heteropoly acid (HPA) species supported on BEA zeolite was applied, and different samples, comprising 20 to 50 wt% of 12-phosphotungstic acid (HPW) were prepared. The as-synthesized supported HPW were subjected to different post-synthesis routes, which involved calcination and ultrasound treatment. Characterization of these materials was performed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, zeta potential measurements, Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Powder Diffraction analysis. Results suggest strong interaction of HPW with the support and revealed that ultrasound treatment resulted in better dispersion of active phase and thus homogeneous morphology of the samples. The zeta potential was found to be dependent on the preparation procedure and HPW content in these materials, while higher HPW loadings induced its agglomeration. Catalytic activity of the synthesized materials was investigated in an ethanol dehydration reaction, where lower HPW loadings induced higher ethanol conversion. Acid sites distribution and accessibility for ethanol molecules were found to be more essential for catalytic activity than HPW loadings, i.e., amount of active sites present in these hybrid materials.

AB  - Tungstophosphoric acid and BEA zeolite composites were synthesized by wetness impregnation, followed by ultrasonication and calcination. Composites were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis and pH-dependent zeta potential. Spectroscopic measurements indicated the interaction of acid and the support by binding of polyanion terminal oxygens and BEA extra framework H+ via hydrogen bonds. Evaluation of prepared composites revealed their higher efficiency in nicosulfuron adsorption, in comparison to parent zeolite. All prepared composites showed excellent adsorption properties for pesticide removal in the range 12.1-25.8 mg of nicosulfuron per gram of investigated sample. Better adsorption capacity was found for sonicated samples in comparison to as-synthesized and calcined ones. It was found that the amount of polyanion in the composites and the extent of the particles surface charge are not crucial for the adsorption application, it is rather the uniformity of the zeolite surface coverage with the polyanion that is was more important.

AB  - Results on adsorption of diclofenac sodium (DS) by modified natural zeolite composites at three levels (10,20 and 30 mmol/100 g) of cationic surfactant-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HB), in a buffer solution, were compared. Characterization of composites before and after drug adsorption was performed by determination of electrokinetic mobility, FTIR and thermal analysis. The results indicated interactions between drug and carriers. The pharmaceutical performance of cationic surfactant-modified zeolites as drug formulation excipients was evaluated by in vitro dissolution experiments. The results were compared with the drug release from corresponding physical mixtures. Prolonged drug release over a period of 8 h (up to 30%) was achieved with both groups of samples. Furthermore, DS release reached up to 85% from physical mixtures containing drug amount closer to a therapeutic dose.

AB  - Nanostructured and granular polyanilines (PANIs) and their composites with zeolite ZSM-5, synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline in water and aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, are evaluated as adsorbents of the organic herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in aqueous solution. The protonated and deprotonated forms of synthesized materials were characterized by elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopies, X-ray powder diffraction, and nitrogen physisorption measurements. The adsorption isotherms of glyphosate on studied materials were best fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich models. The adsorption characteristics of the investigated PANIs and PANI/ZSM-5 composites were found to be much more influenced by the oxidation state and protonation level of PANI in the adsorbents then by the textural and morphological properties of materials. The highest adsorption of glyphosate among all investigated PANI and PANI/ZSM-5 samples, as well as pure ZSM-5, exhibited the deprotonated granular PANI which was synthesized in sulfuric acid medium (98.5 mg/g). High adsorption capacity also showed the deprotonated PANI/ZSM-5 composite with similar to 50% of zeolite (61.9 mg/g) and the protonated nanostructured PANI (59.9 mg/g), both materials prepared in water without added acid.

Natural zeolite was modified with cetylpyridinium chloride in amounts equivalent to 100, 200 and 300% of its external cation-exchange capacity. The starting material and obtained organozeolites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements and thermal analysis. In vitro sorption of diclofenac sodium as a model drug was studied for all surfactant/zeolite composites by means of sorption isotherm measurements in aqueous solutions (pH 7.4). The modified zeolites with three levels of surfactant coverage within the short activation time were prepared. Zeta potential measurements and thermal analysis showed that when the surfactant loading level was equal to external cation-exchange value, almost monolayer of organic phase were present at the zeolitic surface while higher amounts of surfactant produced less extended bilayers, ordered bilayers or admicelles at the zeolitic surface. Modified zeolites, obtained in this manner, were effective in diclofenac sodium sorption and the organic phase derived from adsorbed cetylpyridinium chloride was the primary sorption phase for the model drug. The Langmuir isotherm was found to describe the equilibrium sorption data well over the entire concentration range. The separate contributions of the adsorption and partition to the total sorption of DS were analyzed mathematically. Results revealed that that adsorption and partitioning of the model drug take place simultaneously.

AB  - Context: In this study an investigation of cationic surfactants-modified natural zeolites as drug formulation excipient was performed. Objective: The aim of this work was to carry out a study of the purified natural zeolitic tuff with high amount of clinoptilolite as a potential carrier for molecules of pharmaceutical interest. Materials and methods: Two cationic surfactants (benzalkonium chloride and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide) were used for modification of the zeolitic surface in two levels (equal to and twice as external cation-exchange capacity of the zeolitic tuff). Prepared samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, and powder flow determination. Different surfactant/zeolite composites were used for additional investigation of three model drugs: diclofenac diethylamine, diclofenac sodium, and ibuprofen by means of adsorption isotherm measurements in aqueous solutions. Results: The modified zeolites with two levels of surfactant coverage within the short activation time were prepared. Determination of flow properties showed that modification of zeolitic surface reflected on powder flow characteristics. Investigation of the model drugs adsorption on the obtained composites revealed that a variation between adsorption levels was influenced by the surfactant type and the amount present at the surface of the composites. Discussion and conclusion: In vitro release profiles of the drugs from the zeolite-surfactant-drug composites revealed that sustained drug release could be attained over a period of 8 hours. The presented results for drug uptake by surfactant-zeolite composites and the afterward drug release demonstrated the potential use of investigated modified natural zeolite as excipients for advanced excipients in drug formulations.
