AB - The current study reports the synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of tungstophosphoric acid (HPW) and its potassium salts (KH2PW and K3PW) supported on activated carbon (AC). Because potassium salts of tungstophosphoric acid are insoluble, the carbon supported KH2PW and K3PW were prepared by a two step impregnation method. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by various physicochemical methods such as Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen physisorption. It is observed that all active phases keep their Keggin-type structure after being supported on AC, while their specific surface area is considerably increased by deposition on this porous substrate. The results also indicated that the synthesized materials retained the morphology specific for the support as well as its thermal properties. The adsorption behaviour of the nanocomposites towards nicosulfuron pesticide was found to be particulary good and even slightly improved when compared to pure activated carbon. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was probed for the vapor phase dehydration of ethanol at 300 °C. The conversion of ethanol and selectivity toward ethylene and diethyl ether of nanocomposites were compared with the values of bare HPW, KH2PW and K3PW. Results revealed that catalytic activity depends on the catalyst type and active phase loading. The conversion over unsupported catalysts decreased by increasing the cation content per Keggin unit. The nanocomposites with 30 wt% loading of HPW achieved the best conversion of nearly 100% and the highest and stable selectivity toward ethylene. The catalytic activity of nanocomposites with acidic KH2PW showed lower catalytic activity of about 70%, while the nanocomposites of neutral K3PW and AC showed negligible activity.

AB - Antibacterial properties of graphene oxide (GO) have been studied extensively in the last few years, while for polyoxometalates there are just a few researches. Herein, we prepared nanocomposites of GO and different amounts of 12-molybdophosphoric acid (MoPA) and analyzed their antibacterial activity and both structural and morphological properties. In nanocomposites with higher amounts of MoPA, graphene sheets were significantly changed with disrupted flat, graphene-like morphology of GO. In the nanocomposites with low MoPA content, flat GO morphology was preserved. Additionally, structural analyses showed some changes in symmetry of the Keggin anion as a consequence of interactions between GO and MoPA, the increase in structural disorder and the lowering of electron density in GO structure due to interaction with MoPA. We have studied antibacterial properties on the gram-positive: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis; and the gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coil, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella abony. Only a mild antibacterial effect of GO and nanocomposites with low amount of MoPA against Bacillus subtilis was observed, while the rest of analyzed materials did not show any antibacterial activity.

AB - The Church of the Holy Mother of God Hodegetria in Pec is decorated with wall paintings that date from the beginning of the 14th century. In terms of style they correspond to Byzantine wall paintings from the epoch of Paleologos. The painting technique and pigment pallete has been examined on micro fragments in thin cross sections by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Use of the fresco technique and two supporting plaster layers was noted on the majority of samples, while in large blue painted areas, a combination of fresco and secco techniques was used. The SEM-EDS results showed the presence of Ca as the main component of plaster besides the traces of Si and Mg. In some samples egg white as a binder was identified. The paint film is often multilayered. Twelve pigments were identified, mainly natural earth pigments such as red ochre, yellow ochre and green earth. A mixture of pigments was used for attaining desirable optical and aesthetical impressions. As decay product only weddelite was detected in many preparatory and painted samples.

AB - An optimized synthetic route for obtaining heteropoly acid (HPA) species supported on BEA zeolite was applied, and different samples, comprising 20 to 50 wt% of 12-phosphotungstic acid (HPW) were prepared. The as-synthesized supported HPW were subjected to different post-synthesis routes, which involved calcination and ultrasound treatment. Characterization of these materials was performed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, zeta potential measurements, Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Powder Diffraction analysis. Results suggest strong interaction of HPW with the support and revealed that ultrasound treatment resulted in better dispersion of active phase and thus homogeneous morphology of the samples. The zeta potential was found to be dependent on the preparation procedure and HPW content in these materials, while higher HPW loadings induced its agglomeration. Catalytic activity of the synthesized materials was investigated in an ethanol dehydration reaction, where lower HPW loadings induced higher ethanol conversion. Acid sites distribution and accessibility for ethanol molecules were found to be more essential for catalytic activity than HPW loadings, i.e., amount of active sites present in these hybrid materials.

AB - Tungstophosphoric acid and BEA zeolite composites were synthesized by wetness impregnation, followed by ultrasonication and calcination. Composites were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis and pH-dependent zeta potential. Spectroscopic measurements indicated the interaction of acid and the support by binding of polyanion terminal oxygens and BEA extra framework H+ via hydrogen bonds. Evaluation of prepared composites revealed their higher efficiency in nicosulfuron adsorption, in comparison to parent zeolite. All prepared composites showed excellent adsorption properties for pesticide removal in the range 12.1-25.8 mg of nicosulfuron per gram of investigated sample. Better adsorption capacity was found for sonicated samples in comparison to as-synthesized and calcined ones. It was found that the amount of polyanion in the composites and the extent of the particles surface charge are not crucial for the adsorption application, it is rather the uniformity of the zeolite surface coverage with the polyanion that is was more important.

AB - Raman and FTIR spectroscopy are powerful techniques used to characterize or observe alterations in the structure or properties of Keggin type heteropoly acids, microporousimesoporous materials, as well as their composites. These methods were applied in this study for investigation of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) supported as active phase on zeolites (H-BEA and NaY-zeolite) and mesoporous molecular sieves (TiO2, MCM-41, SBA-15). It has been shown that important information on interaction of heteropoly acid and the support can be obtained by the applied vibrational spectroscopic methods. Obtained results show how interaction of WPA with different supports depends on the nature and properties of both, active phase and the support. In the case of microporous supports such as BEA or NaY zeolites, the basicity of the support, i.e., ratio of Si/Al, strongly determines interaction between WPA species and surface of the support. In the case of mesoporous silica supports, WPA is well dispersed over the support without strong interaction. However, TiO2 causes strong and complex interaction with WPA.

abstract = "Raman and FTIR spectroscopy are powerful techniques used to characterize or observe alterations in the structure or properties of Keggin type heteropoly acids, microporousimesoporous materials, as well as their composites. However, TiO2 causes strong and complex interaction with WPA.",

AB - The present multi-analytical study concentrates on establishing the painting techniques and the identity of the wall painting materials used by the artists from the 13th and 14th centuries to decorate the Zica monastery, Serbia. For this purpose, we demonstrate that micro-Raman spectroscopy is an efficient, non-destructive method with high spatial resolution which gives molecular and crystal structural information of a wide variety of both inorganic and organic materials. It is shown that elementary composition revealed through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is necessary in some cases to confirm the identity of pigments and binders identified by micro-Raman spectroscopy. It was found that a fresco technique, in combination with mainly natural earth pigments such as red ochre, yellow ochre and green earth, was used. Expensive natural pigment lapis lazuli was exclusively used for obtaining blue colour while pure vermilion was used by the artists from the first period of decorations at the beginning of the 13th century. A mixture of pigments was used for attaining different colour shades. For the gilding of saint's haloes, thin golden foil was deposited over the tin sheet. In order to get a desirable optical and aesthetical impression, the metallic leaves were deposited over the yellow ochre preparatory layer. Deposits of gypsum on wall paintings as well as traces of weddellite are degradation products formed as a result of exposing wall paintings to environmental conditions.

AB - Micro Raman spectroscopy was applied to investigate the speciation of heteropoly and isopoly molybdates in 0.05 and 0.005 M aqueous solutions of 12-molybdophosphoric acid at pH values between 1 and 6. For comparative purposes, P-31 NMR spectroscopy was applied too. It is shown that stability of Keggin anion is influenced both by pH and concentration of solution. The Keggin structure is stable in acidic solutions (pH lt 1.6) while defective Keggin structures are formed with further alkalization (up to pH lt 5.6). Monolacunary anion PMo11O397- is the main component in the pH region from 1.6 to 3.4. Further removal of molybdenyl species causes the appearance of other vacant Keggin structures such as PMo9O31(OH)(3)(6-) and PMo6O259- at about pH 4. At pH 5.0, anion PMo6O259- is the main species. In solutions with pH greater than 5.0, heteropolymolybdates disappear completely and isopolymolybdates Mo7O246- and MoO42- are formed in higher amounts. In more diluted solution of 0.005 M, the decomposition scheme of 12-molybdophosphoric acid solution with increasing of pH takes place without observation of significant amounts of Mo7O246- species. If alkalinization is performed with 0.5 M instead of 5 M NaOH, there are no significant changes in the Raman spectra of solutions. It is shown that the spectra of evaporated samples may be used for the identification of molecular species in corresponding concentrated solutions. However, Raman spectra of dry residues of more diluted solutions differ from spectra of corresponding solutions due to the reactions performed during the process of drying and cannot be used for unambiguous identification of species in solution. Acidification of 0.05 M solution of Na2MoO4 shows that at pH >5.6, molybdate anion MoO42- dominates, while in the pH range between 5.6 and 1, heptamolybdate anion Mo7O246- is preferentially formed.

AB - The objective of this study is the structural and morphological characterization of the Ag3PW12O40 salts (AgWPA) of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) obtained under different preparation conditions and testing of their acid catalytic activity in dehydration of ethanol. The structure, morphology and physicochemical characteristics were determined by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption at +/- 196 degrees C, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is shown that the preparation process has a significant influence on the morphological properties of the obtained materials which may be explained by the supposed mechanism of the formation of nanocrystallite's aggregates with more or less epitaxial connection. Neutral AgWPA obtained by filtration from supernatant forms porous aggregates of a symmetric dodecahedral shape, having average sizes about 2 mu m. This sample shows higher specific area in comparison with the salt obtained by evaporation due to the higher micropore volume, while mesopore volumes are the same for both salts. Thus conversion of ethanol and selectivities of the main products, ethylene and diethyl ether, are almost the same and constant for both prepared salts, while their values are changed over the reaction time for the parent WPA acid.

AB - The current study reports the synthesis and characterization of tungstophosphoric acid and its acid silver salt supported on mesoporous molecular sieve SBA-15 and TiO2. Because silver salts are partially insoluble, the SBA-15 and TiO2 supported silver acid salts were prepared by two step sequential impregnations. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by various physicochemical methods such as Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen physisorption at -196 degrees C. It is observed that both active phases keep their Keggin-type structure after being supported on the supports while their specific surface area is considerably increased by deposition on mesoporous substrates. The results also indicated that the synthesized catalysts retained the morphology specific for each of the supports, while their thermal stability is increased in comparison with their active phases. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was probed for the vapor phase dehydration of ethanol at 300 degrees C. Results revealed that all the catalysts show considerably improved catalytic activity in comparison to the bulk active phases.

AB - Heteropoly acids (HPA) attract the attention of large variety of scientists, due to HPA's extraordinary interesting properties and possible application fields. 12-tungstosilicic acid (WSiA), the Keggin type HPA, has some promising characteristic to be used in catalytic processes, but with not well-defined stability. Raman spectroscopy was used for in situ analysis of WSiA hydrolysis in detail in a wide pH range of 1-12. Raman spectroscopy is able to give an almost immediate response/spectrum as a representation of the exact profile/composition of the solution. This method and FTIR spectroscopy, as a complementary technique, enabled recording of the solid and liquid phases of the same sample under different conditions. Our results confirm that the decomposition pathways of WSiA in solution proceed via the formation of the lacunary monovacant anion at pH > 6.4. This anion is a major constituent in pH range up to 9.5. With further increases in pH this species convert to the trivacant lacunary anion. The total decomposition of the Keggin anion to silicate and tungstate occurs at pH > 11.0. The results of the performed study contribute to understand the behavior of WSiA in the water-methanol solution, as the model system of aqueous-organic system. It is concluded that addition of methanol in aqueous solution of WSiA leads to expansion of the pH region where Keggin anion is stable up to 8.1 and above this pH value, precipitation occurs. The obtained data clarify the stability range of WSiA in both water and water-methanol solutions, as well.

abstract = "Heteropoly acids (HPA) attract the attention of large variety of scientists, due to HPA's extraordinary interesting properties and possible application fields. The obtained data clarify the stability range of WSiA in both water and water-methanol solutions, as well.",

AB - Raman spectroscopy enables non-invasive investigation of chemical composition of biological tissues. Due to similar chemical composition, the analysis of Raman spectra of brain structures and assignment of their spectral features to chemical constituents presents a particular challenge. In this study we demonstrate that standard and independent component analysis of Raman spectra is capable of assessment of differences in chemical composition between functionally related gray and white matter structures. Our results show the ability of Raman spectroscopy to successfully depict variation in chemical composition between structurally similar and/or functionally connected brain structures. The observed differences were attributed to variations in content of proteins and lipids in these structures. Independent component analysis enabled separation of contributions of major constituents in spectra and revealed spectral signatures of low-concentration metabolites. This provided finding of discrepancies between structures of striatum as well as between white matter structures. Raman spectroscopy can provide information about variations in contents of major chemical constituents in brain structures, while the application of independent component analysis performed on obtained spectra can help in revealing minute differences between closely related brain structures.

AB - The silver acid salts AgxH3-xPW12O40 (Ag(x)WPA), where Ag content is x = 1 up to x = 2.5, were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared and micro-Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis and nitrogen adsorption. The properties of the prepared salts are compared with those of the parent acid. Regarding the structural, textural and thermal and solubility characteristics, these salts are between salts of group A, with small metal ions, and B group salts with large metal ions. The acid salts are two phase mixtures of soluble acid and insoluble neutral salt, like other alkaline acid salts of H3PW12O40 for x lt 2. The catalytic properties of the acid salts have been studied for the vapor-phase dehydration of ethanol, carried out in a conventional flow-type reactor at 300 degrees C. The acid salts exhibited stable catalytic activity, a little bit lower than tungstophosphoric acid for ethylene production from ethanol.

AB - In this review, Raman spectroscopy is described as a new and potentially powerful diagnostic tool in comparison to routine biochemical tests. Advanced instrumentation and new Raman spectroscopy techniques enable rapid and simultaneous identification and/or determination of several biochemical parameters, such as glucose, acetone, creatinine, urea, lipid profile, uric acid, total protein, etc., with a very low limit of detection. Raman spectroscopy could also be applied in molecule and cell characterization, as well as diagnostics of atherosclerosis in its early stage. Raman spectroscopy is nondestructive and could be applied to all kinds of samples, which simplifies the diagnostics of numerous diseases and pathologic states. Special attention is paid to literature data illustrating the application of Raman spectroscopy for transdermal glucose monitoring and cancer diagnostics.

AB - The various molecular species formed by decomposition of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) in methanol/water solutions of different composition, and over a pH range 1-12, were identified by UV, FTIR, micro Raman and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The dependence of stability on organic solvent amount, pH and concentration of WPA in solution is investigated in detail. It is shown that addition of methanol in aqueous solution of WPA with varied pH causes extension of the pH region where parent Keggin anion is stable. While Keggin anion is preserved in aqueous solution with pH lt 2, in solution with 25% of methanol it is stable up to pH 2.5, in solution with 50% of methanol up to pH 3.5, and in solution with 75% of methanol Keggin anion is observed up to pH 4.5. Various molecular species, such as monovacant and trivacant lacunary Keggin structures and dimeric Wells-Dawson derivatives, are observed as a result of Keggin anion destruction with increasing of pH, but speciation in both aqueous and methanol/water solutions is similar. It is also shown that lacunary anions are less soluble in solutions with higher methanol content and with higher pH. In aqueous solution at pH >8, the solution contains only tungstates and phosphates with no precipitation. In solution with 25% of methanol, precipitate is formed at pH 8.0 and contains trivacant lacunary Keggin anion. In solution with 50% of methanol the precipitation is at pH 6.5, and in solution with 75% of methanol it is observed at pH 4.5, but in both solutions the precipitate contains monovacant lacunary anion as the main component.

AB - Tungstates and polyoxotungstates have been known to be bioactive compounds for a long time. Based on our previous work about sodium tungstate (ST) and 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) as hepatoprotective agents, we performed a seven week long experiment in rats, using ST and WPA pretreatments in thioacetamide (TAA) induced acute liver necrosis. The possible influences of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), given orally for 3 consecutive days before inducing hepatic lesions, were also investigated. The effects were evaluated by the activity of serum enzymes, oxidative stress parameters, antioxidative defense markers, and histopathology in Wistar rats. The obtained results suggest that oral pretreatment with tungstates, especially ST, in combination with DMSO, before the TAA inducted liver necrosis, could be useful for the prevention of hepatic injury in rats.

AB - The various molecular species of 12-tungstophosporic acid (WPA) in aqueous solutions of different pH values (from 1 to 11.5) were investigated by UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The dependence of the attained equilibrium composition in solution on time, concentration of WPA, and type of buffer used was studied. Obtained results indicate that the buffer type and pH value greatly determine the equilibrium composition in the solution. The Keggin structure of the WPA is sustained only up to pH 1.5. With further increase in pH, the decomposition of Keggin anion does not lead directly to the monovacant lacunary anion. Between 1.5 and 2.0. the structures with 2 phosphorus atoms from the Dawson series are dominant as intermediate species. In the pH range 3.5-7.5, WPA is present in the form of the monovacant lacunary Keggin anion. These results are of special importance for the biomedical and catalytic applications of heteropoly compounds (HPCs) and for an improved understanding of the mechanism of their functioning.

AB - Molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten compounds are widely applied as analytical reagents for determination of numerous pharmacologically active substances and different biochemical parameters. Recent data from the available literature pointed to a very potent biomedical activity of compounds containing these trace elements. The present paper represents a survey on the structure and chemical properties of these compounds, as well as on their biological activity, mostly based on their interaction with cations of biomolecules, such as phospholipids and proteins. Besides, their potent inhibitory effects on cellular targets, bacterial and viral DNA and RNA polymerases will be discussed, as well. Numerous authors clearly demonstrated the antiviral (especially anti-HIV), anticoagulant and antineoplastic properties of the compounds containing the above trace elements. It has been also shown that these compounds act on some cellular enzymatic systems leading to the normalisation of blood pressure, blood glucose and serum lipid levels. Also, compounds of these trace elements represent potent antiobesity agents and express hepatoprotective and antioxidative stress activity.

AB - Compounds of phosphotungstic acid (WPA) containing the amino acids alanine (WPA-Ala) or glycine (WPA-Gly) as counter cations were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, and IR spectroscopy. Cellular toxicity was assessed by the trypan blue exclusion method, and the antiviral activity of WPA and the modified WPA compounds was tested against herpes simplex viruses (HSV) type 1 and type 2. Biological assays indicate that the newly synthesized compounds exhibit no evident cytotoxic effects on Vero cells and negligible antiviral activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2.

AB - In this paper the content of trace elements (Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn) were determined in biscuits with addition of different kinds of dry fruits. For all determinations the pretreatment procedures were optimized. The elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma and argon stabilized U-shaped d.c. arc as excitation sources. It is shown that matrix effect originating from alkaline and alkaline earth elements is different in different excitation sources and depends on analyte type. Therefore matrix matching is indispensable.

AB - The antitumour action of three polyoxometallate compounds of Keggin's type: 12-molibdophosphoric acid (MoPA), 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) and Mg salt of WPA (MgHWPA) was studied in vitro. For human cervix carcinoma (HeLa) cells survival, as well as for nonstimulated and stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), MTT test was applied and IC50 values of POMs were determinated. Index selectivity for WPA and MgHWPA are 1.9 and 1.8, calculated for nonstimulated, as well as 2.5 and 2.0, calculated for stimulated PBMS. Combination of studied POMs do not contribute to their lower IC50 values. Apoptosis detection implies mild cytotoxic effect of WPA and more cytostatical effect of MgHWPA. Combination of each of the studied POMs with caffeine decreases HeLa survival in dose dependent way. None of the studied POMs in the used concentrations (up to 100 mmol/L) damages blood cells and/or decreases their number.
