AB - The chemical composition of the essential oils of Satureja horvatii SILIC from two natural habitats (Mt. Orjen and Mt. Lovcen in Montenegro) and from cultivated plants (Belgrade, Serbia) were characterized. For the latter, plants from the locus classicus, i.e., Orjenske Lokve (Mt. Orjen), were transferred to Belgrade and, after three years of cultivation, the chemical composition of their essential oils at different phenological stages was analyzed. The essential oils were obtained from the aerial parts of the plants by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yields and chemical compositions of the S. horvatii oils showed significant differences between the plants collected in the natural habitats and those from cultivation, as well as between the plants at different phenological stages. In the populations from the natural habitats, growing in Mediterranean conditions, the most abundant oil constituents were the phenols thymol (63.7% in the samples from Mt. Orjen) or carvacrol (68.1% in the samples from Mt. Lovcen), while the oils from the cultivated plants (Belgrade), growing in continental conditions, were dominated by linalool (up to 65.8 and 55.9% in average). The basic characteristics of the essential oil from plants at the early phenological stage (before flowering) were high percentages of linalool (37.4%), thymol (27.3%), and carvacrol (12.2%). At the stage of flowering, the percentage of linalool (56.6-57.5%) increased, while those of thymol (15.5-15.8%) and carvacrol (1.4-1.5%) significantly decreased. The essential oil of plants in the full stage of fruiting was characterized by the domination of linalool (58.4 and 65.8%) and lower percentages of thymol (7.6 and 1.3%) and carvacrol (0.7 and 0.1%). In conclusion, the oil composition of S. horvatii was found to depend on the pedoclimatic conditions of the habitat and the phenological stage of the plants.

AB - The methanol extracts of fruits and leaves of Athamanta turbith subsp. hungarica (Borbas) Tutin (Umbelliferae) and A. turbith subsp. haynaldii (Borbas & Uechtr.) Tutin were analyzed for their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids) of the extracts were examined using HPLC. All the extracts were characterized by the presence of caffeic acid derivates, luteolin and its glycosides, with luteolin 7-O-glucoside as one of the main compounds. Luteolin 7-O-rutinoside was detected only in A. turbith subsp. haynaldii extracts. Investigation of antimicrobial activity was performed against six bacteria and two fungal strains, using the agar diffusion technique and broth microdilution assay. The extracts of investigated A. turbith subspecies exerted similar antimicrobial activity, whereas the best activity was detected against Candida albicans. In order to investigate antioxidant properties, ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), radical scavenging capacity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical (HO.), and the effect on lipid peroxidation (LP) were examined. All the examined extracts showed moderate antioxidant capacity, whereas the fruit extracts were more active than the extracts of leaves. Also, the extracts of A. turbith subsp. hungarica exerted higher antioxidant capacity than corresponding A. turbith subsp. haynaldii extracts. The relationship between estimated activity and chemical composition of the extracts is discussed.

AB - Cyclohexane and methanol extracts of leaves and inflorescences of Ampelopsis brevipedunculata and Parthenocissus tricuspidata are shown to exert significant cytotoxic action on both estrogen-dependent (MDA-MB-361) and estrogen-nondependent (MDA-MB-453) breast cancer cell lines. Methanol extracts of P. tricuspidata exhibited higher cytotoxicity for the MDA-MB-453 cell line (inflorescence: IC50 =111.45 ± 2.56 μg/ml; leaves: IC50= 56.76 ± 7.11 μg/ml) than for MDA-MB-361. Cyclohexane extracts of A. brevipedunculata leaves exhibited high cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-453 (IC50 =78.32 ± 0.1 μg/ml) and the estrogen-dependent MDA-MB-361 cell line (IC50 =97.40 ± 2.61 μg/ml). The highest DPPH-scavenging ability was exhibited by methanol extracts of P. tricuspidata inflorescences, with IC50=7.55±0.07 μg/ml. The tested extracts possessed weak antimicrobial activity.

AB - Teucrium arduini L. is an endemic of the Mediteranean to sub-Mediterranean part of the Western Balkans. The ecological plasticity, i.e., inter-population differentiation, of the species Teucrium arduini was analyzed on the basis of morpho-anatomical variability of six populations from different types of vegetation, i.e., of rocky crevices, rocky ground, and a thermophilous forest in the eu-Mediterranean, sub-Mediterranean, and transitional sub-Mediterranean-Central-European climate zones. Univariant statistic analysis included 22 quantitative characters related to leaf and stem anatomy and morphology. In order to establish the variability and significance of morpho-anatomical differentiation, principal component analyses (PCA), multivariant analyses of variances (MANOVA), and discriminant components analysis (DCA) were done. The analyses of plants from these spatially separated populations confirmed that the species T. arduini belongs to the category of xerophytes with malacophyllous leaves.

abstract = "Teucrium arduini L. is an endemic of the Mediteranean to sub-Mediterranean part of the Western Balkans. The analyses of plants from these spatially separated populations confirmed that the species T. arduini belongs to the category of xerophytes with malacophyllous leaves., Teucrium arduini L. je endemična vrsta rasprostranjena u mediteranskim i submediteranskim područjima zapadnog dela Balkanskog poluostrva, od Istre na severu do Albanije na jugu.
