The ageing of skin occurs in all individuals at a variable rate which is influenced by genetic, environmental and hormonal factors. The ageing process can be divided into intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing. With increasing age the epidermis, the dermis and skin appendages progressively lose their youthful properties and abilities while skin functions deteriorate due to structural and morphologic changes. Mature skin is associated with weaknesses of the skin barrier, becoming more susceptible to external aggressors, and water can evaporate from the skin quickly. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in reversing the effects of these age-related changes to restore a youthful appearance and improve patients’ self-perception. Wrinkles now have a greater social impact because people live longer. Science and hedonism overlap in the search for causes, treatments and prevention of wrinkles. Active ingredients go well beyond simple moisturizers and exert a more complex activity in protecting skin from external injuries, nourishing it and removing its superficial layers. Both herbal and synthetic agents are available to cure wrinkles. Common anti-wrinkle agents are hyaluronic acid, proteins, peptides, vitamins, antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids, etc. Beside the surgical treatments, various treatment options are available and include minimally invasive techniques such as microdermoabrasion, facial peels, dermal fillers, collagen and fat injections.en
