Linear coupling of the optical energy levels of d5 ions to non cubic intrinsic strains

Abstract
The fine structure lines of 4E states of Mn++ ions in slightly distorted tetrahedral MnCl4 clusters are analysed. It is shown that these states are linearly coupled to intrinsic strains of E symmetry, the coupling to T2 strains being very small.
