AB - There is little data on the phytochemical/pharmacological properties of Erica spiculifolia Salisb. (syn. Bruckentalia spiculifolia (Salisb.) Rchb.). This study examines the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of different extracts and fractions of E. spiculifolia in vitro on isolated rat peritoneal macrophages, in the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema test, BSA test, and two complementary antioxidant assays. Ethanolic extracts of leaves, flowers, and aboveground parts, and petroleum ether, ether, ethyl acetate, and water fractionations of the ethanol extract of E. spiculifolia applied at doses of 50–200 mg/kg p.o. exhibited dose-dependent anti-inflammatory activity comparable with indomethacin. All tested samples, except for the petroleum ether fraction, exerted excellent in vitro antioxidant activity, and all of them exhibited significant and similar inhibition of BSA denaturation comparable with diclofenac. Ethanolic extract of the aboveground parts obtained by percolation, ethyl acetate and water fractions had the highest efficiency, attenuating inflammation by more than 50% in the lowest applied concentration alongside exceptional radical scavenging activity.

AB - Today, there are a number of applications that allow you to monitor physical activity
and health parameters or schedule a medical examination, and can also help you recognize a
health problem and react in time (1, 2). The aim of the present study was to assess the usage
of health applications (HApps, health-related mobile and/or web applications) among
citizens in Serbia.
The anonymous online questionnaire was distributed via social media in the spring of
2020. Data were processed using the IBM SPSS. 506 respondents participated in the
research, of which 155 were from the health profession. The majority of respondents were
female (73.9%), and the average age was 36.88 ± 11.22. About half of the respondents
(48.2%) have a university degree, and 74.9% are employed. Installed HApps on
phone/computer have 18.2% of respondents, with a statistically significant difference (p
<0.01) between health professionals (25.8%) and non-health (14.8%). The most commonly
used HApps among health professionals are those related to their professional work
(14.7%), followed by general health (3.8%) and specific diseases (1.9%). Non-health
professional respondents mostly used applications related to general health (5.4%), fitness
(2.0%) and the chosen doctor (1.4%). Only 0.6% of citizens used COVID-19 pandemic
applications. The importance of HApps is still not sufficiently recognized in Serbia. Given the
potential in controlling chronic diseases and other health conditions, especially among a
population with limited access to health care and health information, they should be more
integrated into the health system.
AB - Danas postoji niz aplikacija koje omogućavaju praćenje fizičke aktivnosti i
zdravstvenih parametara ili zakazivanje lekarskog pregleda, a mogu pomoći i u
stručni rad (14.7%), opšte zdravlje (3.8%) i specifične bolesti (1.9%).
fitnes (2.0%) i izabranog lekara (1.4%). Aplikacije u vezi sa COVID-19 pandemijom koristilo
je svega 0.6% građana. Značaj HApps još uvek nije dovoljno prepoznat u Srbiji. S obzirom na
potencijal u kontroli hroničnih bolesti i drugih zdravstvenih stanja, naročito među
populacijom sa ograničenim pristupom zdravstvenoj zaštiti i zdravstvenim informacijama,
trebalo bi ih više integrisati u zdravstveni sistem.

AB - According to our previous studies, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia Rchb. (Ericaceae) possess
strong antioxidant activity and hydrogel loaded with 2% ethanolic extract from its flowers
and leaves is a potential southing and wound healing agent (1). Ethanolic extracts of leaves,
flowers, and herba, alongside fractions obtained by systematic solvent extraction method
with solvents of the increasing polarity of liquid-liquid fractionation of areal parts of B.
spiculifolia, were prepared. To estimate in vitro anti-inflammatory activities of eight different
extracts and fractions, isolated rat peritoneal macrophages were employed. MTT test was
used for the cytotoxicity determination, while the anti-inflammatory potential
lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production model was utilized (2). Experimental procedures
with animals complied with the rules of the European Union Normative. Resident rat
peritoneal macrophages were harvested by peritoneal lavage and used for both procedures.
Phytochemical analysis was done by RP-HPLC coupled with DAD detection. Tested samples
statistically significantly decreased macrophage ability to metabolize MTT, mainly in a
concentration-dependent manner. All of them also significantly inhibited NO production
from macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, which can be related to either their
cytotoxic or anti-inflammatory activity. Quantified polar compounds (especially quercetin-3-
O-glucoside) could be associated with better antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as
well as with a lower cytotoxic potential. Indeed, fractions obtained with ethyl acetate and
water, but also ethanol extract obtained after lipids removal with petroleum ether, showed
the most promising effects. These results point out that B. spiculifolia is worth further
investigation in order to detect new naturally occurring anti-inflammatory agents.
AB - Prema našim prethodnim istraživanjima, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia Rchb. (Ericaceae)
poseduje jaku antioksidativnu aktivnost, a hidrogel sa 2% etanolnog ekstrakta cveta i lista
ove biljne vrste pospešuje zarastanje rana (1). Pripremljeni su etanolni ekstrakti listova,
cvetova i nadzemnog dela biljne vrste B. spiculifolia, kao i frakcije dobijene sistematskom
ekstrakcijom rastvaračima rastuć eg polariteta tečno-tečno frakcionisanjem nadzemnih
delova biljke. Za procenu lokalne antiinflamatorne aktivnosti ukupno osam različitih
ekstrakata i frakcija korišćeni su izolovani peritonealni makrofagi pacova. MTT test je služio
za određivanje citotoksičnosti, a model produkcije NO izazvane lipopolisaharidom za in vitro
kvantifikaciju antiinflamatornog potencijala (2).
antiinflamatornih agensa.

AB - Exact number of masters of pharmacy, level of their education, and jobs they are
engaged in is not known in Serbia. The number of pharmacists employed in health
institutions in Serbia is known (data is regularly updated by Pharmaceutical Chamber of
Serbia (FCC) because pharmacists must be licensed and registered). According to the FCC, in
Serbia, there are 6,814 Masters of Pharmacy licensed to work in healthcare institutions (1).
However, their arrangement and number by pharmacy, type and level of services are
unknown. Although all health institutions are now obliged to register through Business
Registers Agency (2), actual number of pharmacies and number of responsible pharmacists
per pharmacy remained invisible. The big question is whether all masters of pharmacy are
aware of their legal obligations, responsibilities, and professional opportunities. The number
of masters of pharmacy employed in other sectors is completely unknown. There is no
register of colleagues with completed health and academic specializations, master and
doctoral studies. The legal opportunity to acquire title of subspecialist in pharmacy should
be used and enable further training and recognition of work to colleagues who deal with
narrowly specialized pharmaceutical jobs. Funds for creating database of pharmacists (who
they are, what positions they hold, and what their level of education is) are minimal. It is only
necessary to recognize the importance of such database and connect key stakeholders. The
intersection of current situation would enable development and improvement of
pharmaceutical profession and would be step forward towards modernization of Serbian
health care system.
AB - U Srbiji nije poznat precizan broj magistara farmacije, stepen njihovog
zdravstvenim ustanovama (1).
potpuno nepoznat. Ne postoji ni registar kolega sa završenim zdravstvenim i akademskim
specijalizacijama, magistarskim i doktorskim studijama. Zakonsku mogućnost za sticanje
zvanja subspecijalista u farmaciji treba iskoristiti i omogućiti dalje usavršavanje i
prepoznati važnost ovakve baze i povezati ključne zainteresovane strane (FKS, Privrednu
komoru Srbije, akademiju, Savez farmaceutskih udruženja Srbije, farmaceutsku industriju).

abstract = "Exact number of masters of pharmacy, level of their education, and jobs they are
engaged in is not known in Serbia.
The
intersection of current situation would enable development and improvement of
pharmaceutical profession and would be step forward towards modernization of Serbian
health care system., U Srbiji nije poznat precizan broj magistara farmacije, stepen njihovog
zdravstvenim ustanovama (1).
potpuno nepoznat. Ne postoji ni registar kolega sa završenim zdravstvenim i akademskim
specijalizacijama, magistarskim i doktorskim studijama. Zakonsku mogućnost za sticanje
zvanja subspecijalista u farmaciji treba iskoristiti i omogućiti dalje usavršavanje i

AB - This paper presents a set of recommendations that can contribute to the improvement
of the pharmacy business. They resulted from a series of professional meetings and a
collection of opinions from masters of pharmacy employed in various health care institutions
in the Republic of Serbia. The general recommendation would imply strict compliance with
existing laws (Law on Medicines and Medical Devices (1), Law on Health Care (2)), but also
the adoption of the Law on Pharmacy, following the example of countries with developed
pharmacy practice. Individual key provisions that would bring improvement of pharmacy
and quality pharmaceutical services to patients in the short term are the mandatory
presence of at least one licensed pharmacist during the entire working hours in each
pharmacy, as well as compliance and control of prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
In the long term, strengthening national regulatory bodies in the field of medicines and
medical devices is important for improving the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines and
the issuance and application of therapy. According to all standards, these jobs should be
entrusted exclusively to masters of pharmacy, and in certain cases to appropriate pharmacy
specialists. Development of specific clinical skills and introduction of additional services,
such as vaccination and disposal of pharmaceutical waste, would significantly contribute to
resource savings and contribute to the health system.
magistara farmacije zaposlenih u različitim zdravstvenim ustanovama u Republici Srbiji.
Opšta preporuka bi podrazumevala strogo poštovanje postojećih zakona (Zakona o lekovima
i medicinskim sredstavima (1), Zakon o zdravstvenoj zaštiti (2)), ali i donošenje Zakona o
lekova bez recepta. Na dugi rok, jačanje nacionalnih regulatornih tela u oblasti lekova i
medicinskih sredstava je značajno radi poboljšanja kvaliteta, bezbednosti i efikasnosti lekova
i izdavanja i primene terapije.
isključivo magistrima farmacije, a u određenim slučajevima i odgovarajućim specijalistima
farmacije.
doprineli zdravstvenom sistemu u celini.

AB - Rubus idaeus L., folium (raspberry leaf) is according to EMA/HMPC
monograph indicated as traditional herbal medicinal product for: the symptomatic
relief of minor spasm associated with menstrual periods, the symptomatic treatment
of mild inflammation in the mouth or throat and the symptomatic treatment of mild
diarrhea. The aim of this work was quantitative determination of phenolic compounds
(namely: total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, arbutin and hydroquinone) and
antioxidant capacity of the different leaves extracts of wild and cultivated Rubus
ideus. Total polyphenols, tannins and flavonoids were determined
spectrophotometrically, HPLC method was employed for quantification of arbutin
and hydroquinone. DPPH test was used for fast antioxidant screening. Arbutin and
hydroquinone were absent in all samples despite some literature date on arbutin
presence in Rubus idaeus. Our phytochemical study showed that raspberry leaves
extracts contain significant amounts of polyphenolic compounds, which could be
useful in its quality estimation. Cultured raspberry leaf extracts seem to be reacher
source of this secondary metabolites while hydromethanolic extracts of wild growing
plant material exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity. Polyphenolic content and
demonstrated activity could, at least in part, explain pharmacological effects of
raspberry leaves.

AB - ObjectivesAs there are no previous studies of the European wild-garlic (Allium ursinum) effects on the gastrointestinal system, despite its traditional applications in gastrointestinal disorders' treatment and regular use in the human diet, we have quantified and compared spasmolytic, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of its different leaf extracts. MethodsWild-garlic extracts were tested for spasmolytic activity on isolated rat ileum, antimicrobial activity on selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi by microdilution method and antioxidant capacity by DPPH radical-scavenging assay. Key findingsWild-garlic extracts were found to decrease ileal basal tone. As the relaxation of K+-induced contractions was similar to one caused by papaverin, the observed spasmolytic effect was most likely mediated through Ca2+-channel inhibition. Ethanolic extract (with the highest phenolic and high alk(en)yl cysteine sulphoxides' levels) produced the strongest spasmolytic activity. In case of acetylcholine-induced contractions, only hydromethanolic extract showed no statistical difference in comparison with positive control. All samples exhibited certain antioxidant potential and strong antimicrobial activity against tested enteropathogenic strains (Salmonella enteritidis was the most sensitive, followed by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Enterococcus faecalis). ConclusionBesides other already established health-promoting effects, wild garlic could be useful in treatment of mild gastrointestinal disturbances.

AB - Uvae ursi folium (Arctostaphylos uva ursi, Ericaceae) is the best known and most widely used herbal urinary antiseptic. In traditional medicine, other Ericaceae species are also used for the treatment of urinary tract infections. The present study investigates antimicrobial activity of five species of Ericaceae family native to the Balkan Peninsula: Arbutus unedo, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Calluna vulgaris, Erica arborea and Erica carnea. Ethanolic extracts were tested against 10 different gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by the disc diffusion technique, where standard tetracycline, streptomycin and penicillin discs and discs containing crystal violet (1 mg/ml) and solvent (70.0% v/v ethanol) were used as controls. The most prominent antibacterial effect was achieved on Staphylococcus aureus with extracts of Calluna vulgaris and Erica carnea. Tested samples showed no activity against the gram-negative strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Inhibitory effects on the growth of gram-positive bacteria were more potent. The exception is Arbutus unedo ethanol extract which exhibited certain activity against a laboratory strain of wild Escherichia coli. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extracts against 10 tested strains of bacteria in disc diffusion assay was generally weak, even for sample in which HPLC determination confirmed the presence of arbutin (secondary metabolite responsible for most of the antibacterial activity of Uvaeursi folium).

AB - Arbutus unedo, Bruckentalia spiculifolia, Calluna vulgaris, Erica arborea and Erica carnea possess strong antioxidant activity and they are traditionally used for the treatment of various skin diseases. The present study investigated the total phenylpropanoid content, antioxidant properties and phenolic composition of dry leaf ethanol extracts of these species. Furthermore, the in vivo effects of gels, each containing 2% of a single extract were tested on the artificially irritated human skin using the objective methods of skin biophysical measurements (erythema index (EI), pH of the skin and electrical capacitance (EC) as a measure of skin hydration level were assessed). In total, 13 components were identified by RP-HPLC coupled with DAD detection; quercitrin, quercetin 3-O-glucoside and gallic acid were detected in all investigated samples while chlorogenic acid and quercetin were present in 4 samples. Regarding the in vivo study, all investigated gels significantly decreased the skin irritation level and reversed the pH of the skin disturbed by preirritation, while results were contradictory regarding skin hydration measurements. In conclusion, the assessed in vivo topical effects of investigated extracts matched well with their phenylpropanoid content as well as with assessed antioxidant activities.

AB - Synopsis Cosmeceutical antioxidants may protect the skin against oxidative injury, involved in the pathogenesis of many skin disorders. However, an unsuitable topical delivery system with compromising safety profile can affect the efficacy of an antioxidant active. This study investigated the antioxidant potential of lactobionic acid (LA), a newer cosmeceutical active, per se (in solution) and incorporated into natural alkyl polyglucoside (APG) emulsifier-based system using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. The a-tocopherol was used as a reference compound. The physical stability (using rheology, polarization microscopy, pH and conductivity measurements) of an Alkyl glucoside-based emulsion was evaluated with and without the active (LA); colloidal structure was assessed using polarization and transmission electron microscopy, rheology, thermal and texture analysis. Additionally, the safety profile and moisturizing potential were investigated using the methods of skin bioengineering. Good physical stability and applicative characteristics were obtained although LA strongly influenced the colloidal structure of the vehicle. LA per se and in APG-based emulsion showed satisfying antioxidant activity that promotes it as mild multifunctional cosmeceutical efficient in the treatment and prevention of the photoaged skin. Employed assays were shown as suitable for the antioxidant activity evaluation of LA in APG-based emulsions, but not for a-tocopherol in the same vehicle.

AB - Arbutus unedo leaf is used traditionally for gastrointestinal complaints. Ethanol extracts from Arbutus unedo collected in both Montenegro (AuM) and Greece (AuG) were found to decrease the ileal basal tonus, with AuG producing a significantly higher (p lt 0.05) reduction in contractile response to acetylcholine. AuM and AuG relaxed 80 mM K(+) induced contractions and shifted the Ca concentration-response curves to the right, similar to that caused by verapamil, suggesting that the spasmolytic effect was induced through calcium channel inhibition. The antioxidant activity of AuM and AuG and the phenolic content of the extracts and dry plant material were studied, and both extracts were found to possess considerable antioxidant properties. AuG showed a stronger in vitro antioxidative activity in the DPPH assay and in the TBA test. Polyphenol, tannin and flavonoid levels were higher in AuG, supporting the more potent spasmolytic and antioxidative effects, whereas the arbutin content was higher in dry plant material collected in Montenegro. AB - Herbal medicinal products and traditional herbal medicinal products consist of one or more herbal drugs (substances) and/or herbal drug preparations (herbal preparations). The main request for the quality of herbal drugs and herbal drug preparations are given in the pharmacopoeias. This paper deals with comparative analyses of the monographs for the active constituents of herbal products/traditional herbal products which are presented in the European Pharmacopoeia sixth edition (Ph.Eur.6.0) and Yugoslav pharmacopoeia 2000. (Ph.Jug.V). Ph.Eur.6.0 contains general monographs for Herbal drugs, Herbal drug preparations and Extracts (Tinctures, Liquid extracts, Dry extracts and Soft extracts). Further, Ph.Eur.6.0 contains monographs about Herbal teas. Ph.Jug.V contains only general monographs for Extracts and Tinctures. Both pharmacopoeias, in the first part and through the general monographs define some methods and procedures for the herbal drugs/herbal drugs preparations testing and assessment. The values of different parameters are given in the general monographs of herbal drugs/herbal drugs preparations or in the individual monographs. In both documents, without some important differences, procedures for some test and parameters are given in the part 2. Methods of analyses within chapters 2.1. Apparatus, 2.2. Physical and physicochemical methods, 2.4. Limit tests, 2.5. Assays, 2.6. Biological test and 2.8. Methods in pharmacognosy. Regarding health safety, in addition to microbiological safety, Ph.Eur.6.0 as well as Ph.Jug.V requires testing on heavy metals, pesticides and radioactivity. Further, Ph.Eur.6.0 requests confirmation that starting material is free from myco-toxins (aflatoxin) and viruses (for animal drugs). The presence of general monographs for Herbal drugs, Herbal drug preparations, Extracts and Herbal teas in the Ph.Eur.6.0 enable quality control during the process of production of herbal medicinal products/traditional herbal medicinal products: control of row material, interphase control and control of final products. General monographs in the Ph.Eur.6.0 can bee apply for the control of the un-officinal herbal drugs. This is very important for improvement of the production process and quality of products, as well as for the inspection of herbal medicinal products/traditional herbal medicinal products taken from the market.
Obe farmakopeje, kroz uvodni deo i u opštim monografijama, definišu određene postupke i metode za ispitivanje biljnih droga i preparata biljnih droga. Aparature, 2.2. Fizičke i fizičko-hemijske metode, 2.4. Ispitivanja dozvoljenih graničnih vrednosti, 2.5. Određivanja, 2.6.0 Biološki testovi i 2.8.

abstract = "Herbal medicinal products and traditional herbal medicinal products consist of one or more herbal drugs (substances) and/or herbal drug preparations (herbal preparations). This is very important for improvement of the production process and quality of products, as well as for the inspection of herbal medicinal products/traditional herbal medicinal products taken from the market., Biljni lekovi i tradicionalni biljni lekovi, kao aktivne sastojke, sadrže biljne droge i/ili preparate biljnih droga, pojedinačne ili u kombinaciji. Obe farmakopeje, kroz uvodni deo i u opštim monografijama, definišu određene postupke i metode za ispitivanje biljnih droga i preparata biljnih droga. Aparature, 2.2. Fizičke i fizičko-hemijske metode, 2.4. Ispitivanja dozvoljenih graničnih vrednosti, 2.5. Određivanja, 2.6.0 Biološki testovi i 2.8.
