AB - This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of three magnesium (Mg) dietary supplements containing mineral immediately available for absorption on Mg biochemical status indices (ionized and total Mg), as well as their effects on electrolytes levels in healthy female young adults (n = 61). After a 10-days intervention period supplementation with powder/granulate containing Mg oxide led to an increase in both ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg in comparison with the baseline. Supplementation with Mg citrate was associated with the significant increase in % of ionized fraction and decrease in serum total Mg concentration. By contrast, among participants consuming Mg carbonate in the form of effervescent tablets ionized Mg concentration and % in total Mg decreased, without detectable changes in serum total Mg. In conclusion, after the short-term supplementation period, Mg oxide demonstrated superior bioavailability compared to the other examined Mg supplements without affecting other minerals’ levels.

AB - Background: Literature data indicate the benefit of magne-
sium (Mg) supplementation. The aim of this study was to
examine the effect of short-term Mg supplementation on
iron status in healthy female participants.
Methods: One hundred healthy female students of the
University of Belgrade - Faculty of Pharmacy participated the
study during eleven intervention days. Students ingested Mg
preparations with the same dose of the active substance. The
analysis included the measurement of serum iron, unsaturat-
ed iron binding capacity (UIBC), total iron binding capacity
(TIBC), total Mg (tMg), ionized Mg (iMg), complete blood
count, met-, carboxy- and oxy-haemoglobin (metHgb,
COHgb, O2Hgb). Transferrin concentrations and percentage
of transferrin saturation (SAT) were calculated manually. The
association among the analyzed biochemical parameters was
examined using polynomial regression. A principal compo-
nent analysis (PCA) was used for the evaluation of interde-
pendence between the analyzed parameters.
Results: A statistically significant trend for change in O2Hgb
(%) by tertiles of iMg concentrations was found (P = 0.029).
Serum tMg reached significant positive correlation with the
SAT at concentration levels greater than 0.9 mmol/L, after
11 days of intervention (R2=0.116). Ionized Mg in a con-
centration higher than 0.6 mmol/L is positively correlated
with SAT and serum Fe (R2=0.214; 0.199, respectively).
PCA revealed variability of 64.7% for two axes after 11 days.
Conclusions: Mg supplementation leads to an improvement
in the certain iron status parameters even in individuals with
optimal levels of these indices. However, caution should be
exercised when supplementing Mg, and laboratory monitor-
ing of the interaction is required.

AB - Nuts are nutrient-dense foods with complex matrices rich in unsaturated fatty acids and other bioactive compounds. Numerous reported health benefits of nuts may be attributed to their unique nutrient profiles and synergistic interaction of their constituents, including macronutrients, micronutrients and phytochemicals. The objective of this study was to explore pharmacy students’ nuts consumption practice, as well as their attitudes and knowledge concerning nuts nutritional and health properties. A cross-sectional survey based on the online self-administered questionnaire, was conducted in September 2020. Among respondents (n=136, 90.4% female and 9.6% male, mean age 23.7±2.0 years), more than half agreed or strongly agreed that regular consumption of nuts might have beneficial effects on health, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the majority of participants perceived nuts as healthy sources of proteins and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The most common reason cited by respondents for eating nuts were taste (80.2%), followed by health effects (53.1%) and nutrient profiles (45.0%). The most commonly consumed nuts among pharmacy students were almonds (35.2%) and peanuts (28.4%), followed by hazelnuts (19.1%) and walnuts (15.6%). Based on self-reported data, students predominantly consume raw nuts (54.0%) as a snack between meals (78.5%). Nutrition-related courses within the faculty curriculum were the main sources of acquiring information regarding the beneficial effects nuts exert on health outcomes. Although certain gaps in knowledge were determined, in most senior students, the attitudes and dietary practices regarding the consumption of nuts were at an adequate level. Nevertheless, expanded efforts and additional educational programs may be useful in strengthening the capacities of these future health professionals for providing adequate nutrition advice and proactive advocacy of nuts health benefits.

AB - Background: Medicines dispensing is an error-prone activity, therefore potentially jeopardizing patient safety. This study aimed to assess the community pharmacists’ attitudes towards the causes of dispensing errors and preventive measures, as well as their practice in incidents reporting. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed by distributing an adopted and validated questionnaire to a nationwide sample of community pharmacists in Serbia. The questionnaire included sections related to the participants’ socio-demographic characteristics, their attitudes towards factors causing dispensing errors and corrective actions, as well as their practice in reporting. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS Statistics software ver. 21.0. The associations between categorical variables were analyzed using Chi-square test. Results: The study included 1,004 participants, mainly female (94.9%), with the mean age 40.9±9.9 years and mean work experience 14.3±10.0 years. More than a third of the participants (35.4%) indicated an increasing risk of dispensing errors. The main causes included illegible prescriber‘s handwriting (44.3%) and interruptions during dispensing (39.2%), while the major corrective actions were providing pharmacists with education in clinical pharmacy (71%) and reducing the interruptions during dispensing (63.9%). The majority of respondents (85.2%) stated that they routinely reported dispensing incidents. However, even 16.5% of them admitted to having fear sometimes or always. Additionally, only 58.1% of participants would use voluntary dispensing error reporting system. Conclusion: Serbian community pharmacists are aware of the existing risk in medicines dispensing and the corrective actions identified should be put into practice so as to manage them prospectively. Although the results indicate good practice in incidents reporting, conducting tailored educations and building of safety culture is necessary to improve patient safety.

AB - The study aimed to examine the external validity of the Folate Food Frequency Questionnaire (F-FFQ) designed for assessing the folate intake in Serbian women of reproductive age. The F-FFQ was tested against repeated 24 h dietary recalls and correspondent nutritional biomarkers (red blood cells (RBC) and serum folate concentrations) using the method of triads. In a cross sectional study, 503 women aged 18-49 years completed dietary questionnaires and representative validation subsample (n = 50) provided fasting blood samples for biomarker analyses. Correlation coefficients were calculated between each of the dietary methods and three pair-wise correlations were applied for the calculation of validity coefficients. Correlation coefficients observed between F-FFQ and three 24 h recalls were r = 0.56 (p lt 0.001) and r = 0.57 ( p lt 0.001) for total sample and validation group, respectively. Bland-Altman plot and cross-classification analyses indicated good agreement between methods. High validity coefficients were determined between the true intake (I) and dietary assessment methods, F-FFQ (Q) and 24 h dietary recalls (R) (rho QI(rbc) = 0.871 and rho QI(ser) = 0.814; rho RIrbc = 0.652 and rho RIser = 0.698), and moderate ones for biomarkers (B) (rho BIrbc = 0.428 and rho BIser = 0.421). The F-FFQ is valid instrument for the assessment of dietary folate intake in women living in Serbia, a country without mandatory folic acid food fortification.

AB - Adherence is tremendously important for efficiency and safety of pharmacotherapy and has a significant influence on its clinical, economic and humanistic outcomes, which can be observed both on the individual level of the patient as well as on the overall healthcare system. The inadequate degree of adherence is a long-lasting and widely present problem which can have immense and long-term consequences. Therefore, the issue of adherence is a big challenge for medical professionals in clinical practice. The concept of adherence is based on cooperation between patients and medical team members in the process of therapy management. It is focused on patients and implies a two-way transfer of information, agreement and shared responsibility for success in realization of adequate therapy regime and defined goals. Although there are numerous methods for adherence assessment, the evaluation of this parameter is still considered problematic. The complexity of adherence can be seen in its multidimensionality since numerous factors which individually and in mutual interaction affect medicine-taking behavior and thus create a framework that determines the achieved level of adherence have been identified and analyzed. Considering the fact that poor adherence is one of the main preventable causes of unsatisfactory therapy results and excessive costs of medical care, it is evidently necessary to ensure a high quality base in the form of knowledge, skills and motivation at the healthcare system level for adherence evaluation and improvement, as well as a multidisciplinary approach based on coordinated activities of healthcare policy creators, researchers and medical professionals.
