AB - Black locust flower extract contains various polyphenols and their glucosides contribute to the potential health benefits. After intake of these bioactive compounds and passage through the gastrointestinal tract, their degradation can occur and lead to a loss of biological activity. To overcome this problem, the bioactive compounds should be protected from environmental conditions. This study aimed to encapsulate the black flower extract in the microparticles based on biodegradable polysaccharides, alginate, and chitosan. In the extract, the total antioxidant content was found to be 3.18 ± 0.01 g gallic acid equivalent per 100 g of dry weight. Also, the presence of lipids (16), phenolics (27), organic acids (4), L-aspartic acid derivative, questinol, gibberellic acid, sterol, and saponins (2) was confirmed using the UHPLC–ESI–MS analysis. In vitro assays showed that the extract has weak anti-α-glucosidase activity and moderate antioxidant and cytotoxic activity against the HeLa cell line. The extrusion method with secondary air flow enabled the preparation of microparticles (about 270 μm) encapsulated with extract. An encapsulation efficiency of over 92% was achieved in the alginate and alginate–chitosan microparticles. The swelling study confirmed a lower permeability of alginate–chitosan microparticles compared with alginate microparticles. For both types of microparticles, the release profile of antioxidants in the simulated gastrointestinal fluids at 37 °C followed the Korsmeyer–Peppas model. A lower diffusion coefficient than 0.5 indicated the simple Fick diffusion of antioxidants. The alginate–chitosan microparticles enabled a more sustained release of antioxidants from extract compared to the alginate microparticles. The obtained results indicated an improvement in the antioxidant activity of bioactive compounds from the extract and their protection from degradation in the simulated gastric conditions via encapsulation in the polymer matrixes. Alginate–chitosan showed slightly slower cumulative antioxidant release from microparticles and better antioxidant activity of the extract compared to the alginate system. According to these results, alginate–chitosan microparticles are more suitable for further application in the encapsulation of black locust flower extract. Also, the proposed polymer matrix as a drug delivery system is safe for human use due to its biodegradability and non-toxicity.

AB - Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz (Rosaceae), also known as wild service tree, is a
deciduous tree widespread in central and southern Europe, north-western Africa, western
Asia, the Balkan Peninsula and the Caucasus (1, 2). Species of the genus Sorbus represent a
rich source of polyphenols that are responsible for their numerous proven effects, including
anti-diarrhoeal, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-atherogenic effect.
Accordingly, the bark of S. torminalis could have interesting composition and effects,
however, data about this herbal drug is insufficient (1). Bark dry methanol extract (DER
9.74:1), obtained after successive extraction with cyclohexane and dichloromethane, was
analyzed for antioxidant potential using DPPH and FRAP assay. Contents of total
polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins were determined using spectrophotometric methods
based on reaction with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FC), reaction with aluminum-chloride and
adsorption by hide powder in combination with reaction with FC, respectively. LC-DAD-ESI-
MS analysis was used for identification of main extract constituents. In DPPH test IC50 value
8.66±0.07 μg/mL was shown, while result of FRAP test was 3.01±0.11 μmol Fe 2+ /mg of dry
extract. Contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins were 0.39±0.06 mg GA/mg of
dry extract, 0.035±0.019% and 1.3±0.08%, respectively. By LC-DAD-ESI-MS analysis 25
compounds were detected among which procyanidins (dimers, trimers and tetramers) are
dominant. The results of this study showed that dry methanol extract of S. torminalis bark is
rich in procyanidins which potentially contribute to its antioxidant activity. Additional
significant effects of this herbal drug and its isolated compounds should be investigated in
future studies.

AB - Dry methanol extract (DER 3.95:1) of aerial flowering parts of Alchemilla viridiflora
Rothm., Rosaceae, obtained after successive extraction with cyclohexane and
dichloromethane, predominantly contains polyphenols, tannins (3.74%), mostly ellagic, and
flavonoids (0.30%), hexosides of quercetin and kaempferol. It shows ACE inhibitory and
anti-Helicobacter pylori activity in vitro (1). Based on the traditional use of the common A.
vulgaris in the treatment of diabetes (2), the effect of this A. viridiflora extract on α-amylase
activity in vitro and lowering blood glucose in rats were investigated. α-Amylase inhibitory
activity was assessed using the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid method. Extract in doses of 50, 100
and 200 mg/kg, p.o., was administered to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats for 20 days,
and blood glucose level and weight of rats were monitored during treatment. Extract
inhibited α-amylase activity at IC 50 5.47 ± 0.30 mg/mL. A dose of 200 mg/kg significantly
decreased blood glucose level after 10 (32.2%) and 20 days of treatment (38.3%). The effect
of this dose was similar to the effect of the reference drug, glibenclamide. A dose of 100
mg/kg significantly increased glucose level by day 10 (50.5%) and a reduction in blood sugar
level of 51.2% was observed only after 10 days. Body weight was correlated with changes in
blood sugar levels. A dose of 50 mg/kg had no statistically significant effect. Results indicate
a significant potential of A. viridiflora aerial parts in the treatment of diabetes, which must be
confirmed by additional studies, and active ingredients need to be identified.
AB - Suvi metanolni ekstrakt (DER 3,95:1) nadzemnih delova u cvetu Alchemilla viridiflora
Rothm., Rosaceae, dobijen nakon sukcesivne ekstrakcije cikloheksanom i dihlormetanom,
sadrži visok nivo polifenola, tanina (3,74%), uglavnom elagnih, i flavonoida (0,30%),
heksozida kvercetina i kemferola. Pokazuje ACE inhibitornu i anti-Helicobacter pylori
aktivnost in vitro (1).
dinitrosalicilnom kiselinom. Ekstrakt A. viridiflora u dozama od 50, 100 i 200 mg/kg, p.o.,
glukoze u krvi i težina pacova su praćeni u određenim vremenskim intervalima tokom
trajanja tretmana. Ekstrakt je inhibirao aktivnost α-amilaze, a vrednost IC 50 iznosila je
5,47±0,30 mg/mL.
(32,2%) i 20 dana tretmana (38,3%).
aktivni sastojci identifikovani.

abstract = "Dry methanol extract (DER 3.95:1) of aerial flowering parts of Alchemilla viridiflora
Results indicate
a significant potential of A. viridiflora aerial parts in the treatment of diabetes, which must be
confirmed by additional studies, and active ingredients need to be identified., Suvi metanolni ekstrakt (DER 3,95:1) nadzemnih delova u cvetu Alchemilla viridiflora
Rothm., Rosaceae, dobijen nakon sukcesivne ekstrakcije cikloheksanom i dihlormetanom,
sadrži visok nivo polifenola, tanina (3,74%), uglavnom elagnih, i flavonoida (0,30%),
heksozida kvercetina i kemferola. Pokazuje ACE inhibitornu i anti-Helicobacter pylori
aktivnost in vitro (1).
dinitrosalicilnom kiselinom. Ekstrakt A. viridiflora u dozama od 50, 100 i 200 mg/kg, p.o.,
glukoze u krvi i težina pacova su praćeni u određenim vremenskim intervalima tokom
trajanja tretmana. Ekstrakt je inhibirao aktivnost α-amilaze, a vrednost IC 50 iznosila je
5,47±0,30 mg/mL.
(32,2%) i 20 dana tretmana (38,3%).
aktivni sastojci identifikovani.",

AB - Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been obvious that virus infection poses
a serious threat to human health on a global scale. Certain plants, particularly those rich in polyphe-
nols, have been found to be effective antiviral agents. The effectiveness of Alchemilla viridiflora Rothm.
(Rosaceae) methanol extract to prevent contact between virus spike (S)-glycoprotein and angiotensin-
converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and neuropilin-1 (NRP1) receptors was investigated. In vitro results
revealed that the tested samples inhibited 50% of virus-receptor binding interactions in doses of
0.18 and 0.22 mg/mL for NRP1 and ACE2, respectively. Molecular docking studies revealed that the
compounds from A. viridiflora ellagitannins class had a higher affinity for binding with S-glycoprotein
whilst flavonoid compounds more significantly interacted with the NRP1 receptor. Quercetin
3-(6”-ferulylglucoside) and pentagalloylglucose were two compounds with the highest exhibited
interfering potential for selected target receptors, with binding energies of −8.035 (S-glycoprotein)
and −7.685 kcal/mol (NRP1), respectively. Furthermore, computational studies on other SARS-CoV-2
strains resulting from mutations in the original wild strain (V483A, N501Y-K417N-E484K, N501Y,
N439K, L452R-T478K, K417N, G476S, F456L, E484K) revealed that virus internalization activity was
maintained, but with different single compound contributions.

AB - In the pharmacies of Republic of Serbia, three dietary products and food supplements with blueberry fruit preparations intended to improve eyesight were found and the content of anthocyanins in them was analyzed. According to Ph. Eur. 10, colorimetric method was used for determination of anthocyanins, which was given in the monograph of Myrthilli fructus recens. For compairing, the content of anthocyanins in two juices with blueberry fruit and other fruits with anthocyanins (aronia, grape) was analysed using an AOAC colorimetric method given by Lee et al. (2005).
Retin activ (ESI srl, Italy) a dietary product with a special medical purpose, contains vitamins A, C, E, 15 mg of dry blueberry extract standardized at 25% anthocyanosides, lutein and zeaxanthin. The advice of the manufacturer for use is one capsule a day. Our analysis have shown that Retin activ in one capsule contain 8.35 ±0,17 mg of anthocyanins, calculated as cyanidin 3-O-glucoside chloride.
Pro-Visio tablets (United Pharma, Bratislava, Slovakia), a food supplement with lutein, zeaxanthin, 20 mg of blueberry extract, vitamin E and selenium, contained 5.14±0.18 mg of anthocyanins, calculated as cyanidin 3-O-glucoside chloride in one tablet. The advice of the manufacturer for use is one capsule a day.
Visionace Original tablets (Vitabiotics, London, UK) contain 23 components including blueberry extract (60 mg) and 0.02±0.0089 mg of anthocyanins per tablets.
The juices, Bravo - blueberry (RAUCH SERBIA DOO) and Nectar - apple, aronia, blueberry and grape (Nectar DOO, Serbia), contained 42.57±2.66 mg/L and 31.80±0.01 mg/L of anthocyanins, respectively.
According to the literature, blueberry anthocyanins has been reported to enhance night visual acuity and contrast sensitivity and are used in the supplements to improve vision health. Older studies (Vannini et al., 1986) have shown significant improvement of the pupillary muscle contraction in reduced light conditions in healthy young subjects after administration of 240 mg of blueberry extract containing 36% anthocyanins. The claimed effect refers to an improvement of visual adaptation to the dark. Newer studies were contradictory.
JECFA has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 2.5 mg/kg bw/day for anthocyanins from grape skin. The dose of 50 mg of anthocyanins of black current concentrate have shown positive effect after 30 min of dark adaptation compared before and 2 h after intake of test drink in 12 healthy subjects (Nomi et al., 2019).
In conclusion, our results suggest that the best option for better eye health is to use products with concentrated blueberry fruit extracts instead of juices, but the intake of at least 50 mg of anthocyanins per day should be ensured.

AB - The attitudes of pharmacists about anthocyanin-based products from blueberry in the pharmacies were tested with electronic based questionnaire. In the study, 107 pharmacists from the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska participated, mostly females (84.1%), over 30 years of age who work in pharmacy chains (3 or more pharmacies) (79.4%). When asked if they have any of the anthocyanin-based products from blueberry fruit in the pharmacy, the majority answered in affirmative (72.0%) and that these are dietary supplements for maintaining eye health (76.9%). Half of the surveyed pharmacists (50.5%) answered that they only sometimes recommend these products. More than 50% were familiar with the pharmacological action of anthocyanins, and as many as 64% that anthocyanins achieve their positive effect on vision in low light by regenerating visible purple, rhodopsin. Also, the pharmacist knew other pharmacological activities of anthocyannins, as vasoprotective (52.3%), antioxidant (83.2%) and anti-inflammatory (44.9%). A large number of respondents knew that carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin), in addition to anthocyanins, also show a beneficial effect on vision.
Finally, it can be concluded that pharmacists in pharmacies lack knowledge about the pharmacological effect of anthocyanins and that we need to work on educating pharmacists about the effects of these herbal pigments and herbal ingredients in general.

AB - The composition of biologically active compounds of Calocybe gambosa (Lyophyllaceae) was analysed, and
the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were tested in vitro. C. gambosa was low in energy, fat, and car-
bohydrates, but rich in proteins and fibres. The total polyphenol content in the extracts was low (23.08 ±
0.67 in aqueous and 24.99 ± 4.25 mg GA mg 1 of extract in methanolic extract). The methanolic extract
showed anti-DPPH radical activity with an IC 50 of 626.10 ± 25.20 mg mL 1 . The sample of C. gambosa is
rich in nucleotides and amino acids responsible for its pleasant taste. The nucleoside and 50-mono-
phosphates contents were 0.97 mg g 1 and 2.32 mg g 1 of dry mushroom, respectively. The contents of
essential and non-essential amino acids were 18.41 ± 0.06 and 41.75 ± 0.30 mg g 1 d.w., respectively. The
percentages of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were 42.6% and 57.4%, respectively. The most
abundant water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins were B1 and E, respectively. Cytotoxic effect of the extracts was examined against different cancer cell lines, and the best cytotoxicity was showed by the
peptide extract against colon cancer cell line LS174.

abstract = "The composition of biologically active compounds of Calocybe gambosa (Lyophyllaceae) was analysed, and
the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities were tested in vitro. C. gambosa was low in energy, fat, and car-
bohydrates, but rich in proteins and fibres.
Cytotoxic effect of the extracts was examined against different cancer cell lines, and the best cytotoxicity was showed by the
peptide extract against colon cancer cell line LS174.",

AB - The parasol mushroom Macrolepiota procera (Scop.:Fr.) Sing, Lepiotaceae, is a highly valued edible type of fungi. Its top is an egg-shaped, gray to brown hat, covered in peal-like marks. This mushroom resides on a layer of decomposing leaves in all types of the forests, appearing solitary or in small groups from late summer to autumn. Besides good taste, it has good nutritional and medicinal value. So far, scientific studies on M. procera have shown its antihypertensive, antioxidative, antiproliferative and cytotoxic abilities. Inhibitory effect against alpha-amylase, total polyphenolic content and antiradical scavenging activity of methanol extracts prepared from dry mushroom from local market in Belgrade was the main goal of this study. Alpha-amylase inhibitory assay was assessed spectrophotometrically with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid reagent. Total polyphenolic content and antiradical activity in methanolic extract was determined using common Folin-Ciocalteu method and DPPH assay. Concentration of methanolic extract that inhibited 50% alpha-amylase (IC50) was 0.66 mg/mL. The content of polyphenols in methanolic extract was 13.07±0.24 mg of gallic acid/g dry extract. The concentration that neutralizes 50% DPPH radicals was 466.45±5.52 μg/mL, which was weaker antiradical activity than standard antioxidants vitamin C (IC50 3.8 μg/ mL) and quercetin (IC50 2.75 μg/mL).

AB - Tinder fungus, Fomes fomentarius (L.) Fr. (Polyporaceae), is a large, woody, perennial fungus. It is a plant pathogen which grows on the beech and other deciduous species as a parasite or saprophyte causing a heart rot of the wood. Some studies have shown that F. fomentarius has hypoglycemic, anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective and anti-tumor effect. Several classes of metabolites were identified: primary metabolites i.e., proteins, polysaccharides (β-glucans), polysaccharide-protein complexes, and secondary metabolites such as triterpenes and sterols, organic acids, benzofurans, coumarins, volatile components. GC/MS analysis of cyclohexane extract of fungus collected on mountain Avala in 2017 have shown the presence of sterols: ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3-ol (46.8%); ergosta-7,22-dien-3-ol (25.4%); ergosta-7,22-dien-3-on (15.9%); ergost-7-en-3-ol (fungisterol, kampesterol) (4.3%); 5,6-dihidro-3-ergosterol (5.5%). Fatty acids were also determined, including palmitic acid (C16:0) 34.0%, stearic acid (C18:0) 18.0%, linoleic acid (C18:2n6c) 10.8%, heneicosanoic acid (C21:0) (5.6%), behenic acid (C22:0) (10.9%), tricosanoic acid (C23:0) (18.4%) and lignoceric acid (C24:0) (2.3%). Cyclohexane extract has shown antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains including Helicobacter pylori and significant cytotoxic activity against HeLa cell line with an IC50 25.10±7.16 (μg/mL). These activities could be due to the presence of cytotoxic fatty acids.

AB - Nutritional value and chemical composition, including the content of vitamins, fatty acids, 5'-nucleotides and nucleosides and amino acids, as well as biological activities, including antioxidant, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory and cytotoxic activity of black trumpet (Craterellus cornucopioides (L.) Pers.) were tested in vitro. C. cornucopioides was low in energy, fat and carbohydrate contents, but rich in dietary fibre, especially β-glucan as well as niacin and α-tocopherol. The content of essential and non-essential free amino acids was 1.49 and 5.48 mg/g dry weight (dw). The nucleosides and 5'-nucleotides were determined at 1.84 and 3.99 mg/g dw, respectively. The share of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) was 75.92% with oleic acid as the major UFA. Cyclohexane and dichloromethane extracts expressed significant cytotoxic activity against selected cell lines, human epithelial cervical cancer cells (HeLa), adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549), colorectal cancer cells (LS174) and normal MRC-5 human embryonic lung fibroblast cells (IC50 of 78.3-155.6 μg/mL). ACE inhibitory activity of the aqueous extract was strong with an IC50 of 0.74 μg/mL. It can be concluded that black trumpet is a good source of nutrients, such as vitamins, dietary fibres, amino acids, nucleotides and fatty acids, which contribute to the overall nutritional value of this fungus with potential for ACE inhibitory activity and use in anti-hypertensive diet.

AB - Alchemilla viridiflora Rothm., Rosaceae is a herbaceous plant widespread in central Greece, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Serbia with Kosovo. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis leads to the identification of 20 compounds in methanol extract, mainly ellagitannins and flavonoid glycosides. Given that various plant extracts have traditionally been used to treat hypertension and that some of the analyzed methanol extract constituents have beneficial cardiovascular effects, we hypothesized that some of these effects are achieved by inhibiting angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE). The dose- dependent ACE inhibitory activities of A. viridiflora and miquelianin were observed with an IC 50 of 2.51 ± 0.00 μg/mL of A. viridiflora extract compared to the IC 50 of 5.4139 ± 0.00 μM for miquelianin. The contribution of the single compounds to the tested activity was further analyzed through the in silico experimental approach. Computational docking results showed that tiliroside, ellagic acid pentose and galloyl-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-glucose exhibited even better binding affinity for the ACE active site than miquelianin, for which ACE activity was confirmed by an in vitro assay.

AB - Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) are the most common infections in the population, especially in children. URIs are mostly of viral origin and tend to resolve spontaneously in approximately one week. Bacterial URIs are less common, and come mostly as superinfections of acute viral diseases. The therapy is symptomatic and aimed at alleviating cough, maintaining the patency of airways and preventing disease progression. If there are no reasons to see a doctor, parents should be advised to apply general measures and give herbal medicinal products to their children, in an attempt to relieve cough, sore throat and nasal symptoms. In productive cough, herbal expectorants, such as, for example, Hederae helicis folium extracts, are used to facilitate the elimination of mucus. On the other hand, demulcents (Althaeae radix, Plantaginis lanceolatae folium) alleviate dry cough by reducing local irritation. Honey also significantly reduces the frequency and severity of acute cough episodes. Extracts of Sisymbrii officinalis herba and Pelargonii radix are useful for the alleviation of nasal symptoms and sore throat. If the application of the proposed herbal products does not resolve the symptoms within a week, advice of a medical doctor should be sought. © 2022, Pharmaceutical Association of Serbia. S druge strane, demulcentna sredstva (Althaeae radix, Plantaginis lanceolatae folium) ublažavaju suv kašalj smanjenjem lokalne iritacije. Med značajno smanjuje učestalost i težinu epizoda akutnog kašlja. Nazalni simptomi i bol u grlu se mogu ublažiti primenom biljnih lekovitih proizvoda na bazi ekstrakata Sisymbrii officinalis herba, Pelargonii radix i Origani majoranae herba. Ukoliko tokom nedelju dana primene ne dođe do poboljšanja stanja, potrebno je potražiti savet lekara.

abstract = "Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) are the most common infections in the population, especially in children. Ukoliko tokom nedelju dana primene ne dođe do poboljšanja stanja, potrebno je potražiti savet lekara.",

AB - Phytochemical and pharmacological in-vestigations of essential oils isolated from plant species of the genus Seseli have been intensified recently. These plant species have long-term use in nutrition and traditional medicine in the treatment of various disorders. Volatile secondary metabolites of Seseli gracile Waldst. & Kit (Apiaceae) have not been pharma-cologically examined so far. The aim of the conducted research was to assess the antiradical, antimicrobial and spasmolytic ac-tivities of S. gracile essential oil isolated from the aerial parts of the plant. Methods. The antiradical activity was determined us-ing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scaveng-ing test, antimicrobial activity using broth microdilution meth-od with standard strains of Gram (+), Gram (-) bacteria and yeast, while spasmolytic activity was evaluated on isolated rat il-eum, pre-contracted with a high concentration of potassium. Results. The results showed moderate antiradical (SC50 = 78.60 μg/mL) and good spasmolytic activity (IC50 = 271.4 nL/mL) of S. gracile essential oil. In the range of tested concen-trations, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was deter-mined only for the strain of Escherichia coli (500 μg/mL). Con-clusion. Results obtained in this study justify the need for fur-ther studies to elucidate exact molecular mechanism underlay this spasmolytic effect of S. gracile herb essential oil.
Rezultati. Rezultati pokazuju umerenu antiradikalsku (SC50 = 78.60 μg/mL) i dobru spazmolitičnu aktivnost (IC50 = 271.4 nL/mL) etarskog ulja S. gracile.

AB - Parsley is a biennial aromatic plant from the Apiaceae family, which is characterized by an unbranched root, pinnately divided leaves, umbels and schizocarp. It contains essential oil in all parts, with phenylpropane and terpene compounds as main components. It is rich in flavonoids and other polyphenolic compounds, containing furanocoumarins, carotenoids, polyacetylenes, and its leaves are a source of vitamins and minerals. The chemical composition of parsley depends on a number of factors, so it differs not only in different parts and varieties of the plant, but also in different samples of the same parts of one variety. The most important parsley compounds are myristicin, apiol, 1-allyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethoxybenzene, β-phellandrene, 1,3,8-p-menthatriene, β-pinene, terpinolene, apiin, oxypeucedanin and falcarinol. Parsley has a long tradition of use in the treatment of urinary tract disorders, and modern in vitro and in vivo studies reveal numerous effects of various parsley preparations such as diuretic, antiurolithiasis, hypouricemic, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet effect. Today, apart from its medical application, parsley is one of the most commonly used culinary herbs.

AB - In 2017, there were 36 543 patients with cancer
in the hospitals in Republic of Srpska (RS). The trend for the growth of diseased patients of
younger age is evident. The costs for cytostatics in 2017 year amounted
to 14,31millions EUR. Procurement of cytostatics at the tertiary level of
healthcare is provided through the Health
Insurance Fund of Republic of Srpska and has
been conducted through public procurement. Very often there are the shortages of cytostatics
in the hospitals. The patients are forced to take over the
procurement of these drugs themselves. Patients are forced to buy drugs in other
countries.

younger age is evident.

AB - Recent studies demonstrated that Rumex species exhibit various
pharmacological activities, such as antiinflamatory, antioxidant, anticancer,
antimicrobial, but there are almost no data on pharmacological activities of Balcan
endemic species Rumex balcanicus. Thus, the aim was to examine antioxidant
activity, using DPPH and FRAP method, antimicrobial activity via broth
microdilution method and α-amylase inhibitory activity using DNS reagent of
aqueous and methanol extracts of roots and aerial parts of R. balcanicus, collected on
Vlasina Lake in 2014. All tested extracts exhibited high antioxidant activity which
has been correlated with the high content of polyphenols. Aqueous extracts exhibited
lower activity compared to methanol extracts. Methanol extract ofR. balcanicus roots
showed the highest activity, both in DPPH (IC50= 9.57 μg/mL) and FRAP test
(IC50=3.98 μmol Fe/mg of extract), while aqueous extract of aerial parts showed the
lowest activity (IC50= 24.73 μg/mL; IC50=2.11 μmol Fe/mg). Only methanol extract
of aerial parts showed α-amylase inhibitory activity with IC50=252 μg/mL. All
extracts had low antimicrobial activity against almost all tested bacterial strains except
against Bacillus subtilis. Positive results obtained in this study show that R. balcanisus
contains potential as a new raw material and for the development of drugs efficient in
treating diabetes.

AB - Rumex balcanicus Rech.f. (Polygonaceae) is an endemic species that inhabits
central parts of Serbia and Kosovo. The genus Rumex is characterizied by the
accumulation of anthraquinones, naphthalene-1,8-diols, flavonoids and stilbenoids.
Aerial parts of R. balcanicus, collected on Vlasina Lake (Serbia) in 2014, were used
to determine the chemical composition and cytotoxic activity. Cyclohexane,
dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extracts were prepared and tested using
MTT-test, against human epithelial cervical cancer cells (HeLa), human colon
carcinoma cell line (LS174), human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549) and
healthy MRC-5 human embryonic lung fibroblast cell line. Methanol and aqueous
extracts were analyzed using LC-MS. In tested extracts, caffeic acid derivates and
flavonol derivatives were identified. The main components in both extracts were rutin,
miquelianin, quercitrin and quercetin 3-O-acetyl-rhamnoside. Caffeic acid and its
glycosides were also present in analyzed extracts. Aqueous extracts had no
cytotoxicity against tested cell lines, while cyclohexane, dichlormethane and
methanol extracts were active against all tested cell lines with IC50 ranged from
116.48±3.26 μg/mL to 178.21±1.30 μg/mL. Due to the presence of flavonoids and
exhibited cytotoxic effect, R. balcanicus herba could be interesting as a plant material
for further pharmacological analysis and isolation of the anti-tumor compounds.

AB - Herbal medicinal products are very important for cough therapy and commonly used in both self-medication and doctor's recommendation. Herbal drugs used in cough therapy can be divided into expectorant and demulcent herbal drugs (drugs containing heteropolysaccharides, most commonly mucilages). Clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy of ivy leaf extracts and fixed combinations of thyme herb and primrose roots extracts as expectorants in productive cough, while for the most other herbal drugs and their preparations used in cough therapy only traditional use is documented. Each herbal drug used in cough therapy has its specific application restrictions (contraindications, special warnings, precautions, interactions, and adverse effects).

AB - Three seaweeds (Halimeda tuna, Codium bursa and Cystoseira barbata) and one seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa) were collected from the Coast of Montenegro, Gulf of Boka Kotorska and their chemical analysis was performed. In seagrass C. nodosa, three phenolic compounds were identified (diosmetin 7-sulfate, caftaric and coutaric acid). The content of β-glucan, fatty acids, sterols and micro- and macro-elements were investigated among all samples. The highest content of β-glucan was detected in C. nodosa seagrass (13.04±0.42 g/100 g). The highest polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) level was reported in C. barbata, the brown alga (7.157 mg/g), which also had the significant sterol content (fucosterol, 21.76±0.1 μg/g). Green algae, C. bursa and H. tuna, showed the highest level of sterols (β-sitosterol, 95.21±0.16 μg/g and 73.90±0.08 μg/g, respectively). H. tuna had the highest content of calcium (Ca) in amount of 55125 μg/g. In C. bursa, C. barbata and C. nodosa, the Na/K ratio was low (0.43, 0.46 and 0.69, respectively).

AB - Sweet flag rhizome (Acorus calamus L., Araceae) exhibits various biological activities such as sedative, anticonvulsant,
immunosuppressant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory. This plant is protected in Serbia, but due to
its high market requirements, the cultivation of this species could be the final solution. The content and composition
of essential oils from 24 cultivated samples and five samples of sweet flag from natural populations, as
well as the influence of nitrogen fertilization on the composition of essential oils were studied. Essential oils were
analysed using GC and GC/MS. Statistical analysis included the ANOVA and PCA analysis. The total content of
essential oil was not significantly different between the natural (0.80–1.10%) and cultivated samples
(1.15–1.30%). In all essential oils main compounds were β-asarone (4.82–17.98%), cadinadienol
(10.14–13.95%), camphor (3.55–13.20%), and acorenone (9.68–12.64%). The cultivation of sweet flag showed
significant (p < 0.05) impact on the composition of essential oil and the content of β-asarone (4.82–17.07%,
mean 11.95±4.76 vs. 17.51–17.98%, mean 17.71 ± 2.23). The PCA analysis also separated the essential oils
from natural and cultivated conditions based on the content of β-asarone. On the other hand, the amount of the
fertilizer did not show any effect (p > 0.05) on the composition of investigated samples. The process of cultivation
increased the level of active, but potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic compound β-asarone. It would be
significant to determine the content of β-asarone routinely in the sweet flag rhizome, especially in the cultivated
plants.
